Spatial dynamics and Palestinian resilience:The lifestyle of Al-Kurshan Bedouins in Bethlehem District

This study explores the role of Bedouins in preserving Palestinian land through their own means of community resilience through the concept of“Art of being”and its entailed“Arts of presence and persistence”.This is examined through the correlation between Bedouin lifestyle and the spatial distribution of structures within“Al-Kurshan”Bedouin clan in Area C in the West Bank.Based on a mixed qualitative and spatial methodologies,information was gathered through semi-structured interviews with Al-Kurshan Bedouins and employees of organizations supporting Bedouins,on-site observation,and analyses of maps and photos,in addition to drawings and illustrations.The spatial distribution of Bedouin built structures is analyzed in relation to landscape and climate,social aspects within the families,and available service and sectorial infrastructures.These analyses give insight on how Bedouins struggle against adopting other lifestyles.The study shows that the Bedouins are slowly forced to negotiate their semi-nomadic lifestyle,but resist giving up their right to exist against the threat of forced displacement.They maintain their“Art of being”which partly represents their own way of safeguarding Palestinian lands from confiscation.The study contributes to the wider discussion of spatial dynamics of Bedouins and their community resilience within the Palestinian geopolitical context.

The Mediterranean Sea is home to an interesting biodiversity. The current cumulative and descriptive study aims to enumerate some relatively large marine mammals, reptiles, and fishes that have been spotted, caught, by-caught, or stranded on the coast of the Gaza Strip, palestine, which extends about 42 km along the Mediterranean Sea. This 20-year study from 2003 to 2022 relied much on frequent field visits, meetings, and discussions with stakeholders, following local media sites and social media pages, and photography. The study recorded at least 26 giants or relatively large marine organisms on the Mediterranean coast of the Gaza Strip, palestine. Certainly, the coming years may bring other marine organisms of relatively large sizes. Marine mammals included three species of cetaceans with the Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physalus) being the largest mammal and even the largest animal ever recorded in this study. Marine reptiles included three species of sea turtles, the largest of which is the Leatherback Sea Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), which is in fact the world’s largest sea turtle. The bony fishes were represented by ten species, the largest of which was the Ocean Sunfish (Mola mola), which is the largest bony fish in the world. The cartilaginous fishes included ten species with the largest specimens encountered were the Shortfin Shark (Isurus oxyrinchus), Bluntnose Sixgill Shark (Hexanchus griseus), Scalloped Hammerhead Shark (Sphyrna lewini), and Giant Devil Ray (Mobula mobular). Seabirds were not included in the study. The Alexandria Pompano (Alectis alexandrinus) and the Silver-Cheeked Toadfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus), which are bony fishes, appear to be the relatively smallest marine organisms recorded here. In conclusion, the role of the various parties must be coordinated to ensure the sustainability of human activities and their compatibility with the task of conserving local marine biota, including the gigantic or relatively large ones.

Banking is an essential sector of palestine’s economy.More credits provided by banks are considered to have a positive impact on economic growth so that the overall objective of this study is to examine the impact of bank lending on economic growth in palestine.The study employs the Augmented Dickey-Fuller to test for stationarity in the time series,The Johansen co-integration,Vector Autoregressive Model and Vector Error Correction Model are employed to identify the long-run and short-run dynamics among the variables,and Granger causality test in order to determine the direction of causality.The study finds that a long run relationship exists among the variables and insignificant short run relationship.Also,the study findings show that there is unidirectional causality and runs from GDP to bank lending.The insignificant contribution of bank lending to GDP is attributed to the fact that banks are not highly interested in lending to the production sector of the economy due to the high level of risk.However,the primary empirical evidence reveals that bank lending doesn’t cause economic growth,but economic growth causes bank lending.

Objective:To assess the prevalence of intestinal parasites among Jenin Govemorate(Northern palestine) population.Methods:A retrospective laboratory analysis of stool specimens was carried out for intestinal parasite examination in Jenin Governmental Hospital,Jenin Govemorate,Northern palestine.The records were collected from the clinical microbiology laboratory of the Jenin Governmental Hospital between January 2000 and December 2009. Results:Our retrospective study showed that the prevalence of intestinal parasite infection during 10 years ranged from 32.0-41.5%.There are at least 7 different parasites encountered.The most common pathogenic parasites identified were:Entamoeba histolytica(8.2-18.2%),Enterobius vermicularis(15.6-28.9%).The other parasites present were Giardia lamblia,Ascaris lumbricoides, Strongyloides stercoralis,Taenia species and Ancylostoma duodenale.(Hookworms).Conclusions: Intestinal parasitic infection is an important public health problem in Jenin govemorate, palestine.It is necessary to develop effective prevention and control strategies including health education and environmental sanitation improvement.

Objective:To detect the species of larval trematodes(cercariae) in Melanopsis praemorsa snails from 5 different fresh water bodies in palestine.Methods:A total of 1 880 Melanopsis praemona snails were collected from different fresh water bodies in palestine from October,2008 to November,2010.Cercariae in Melanopsis praemona snails were obtained by lighting and crushing methods.The behavior of cercariae was observed using a dissecting microscope.Results:Three different species of larval trematodes were identified from Melanopsis praemona snails collected only from Al-Bathan fresh water body,while snails from other water bodies were not infected. These species were microcercous cercaria,xiphidiocercaria and brevifurcate lophocercous cercaria.These cercariae called Cercaria melanopsi palestinia 1,Cercaria melanopsi palestinia H and Cercaria melanopsi palestinia III have not been described before from this snail in palestine. The infection rate of Melanopsis praemona collected from Al-Bathan fresh water body was 5.7%, while the overall infection rate of snails collected from all fresh water bodies was 4.3%.Details are presented on the morphology and behavior of the cercariae as well as their development within the snail.Conclusions:These results have been recorded for the first time and these cercariae may be of medical and veterinary importance.

Objective:To investigate the quality of life of infertile couples who seek in vitro fertilizations(IVFs)by gender in the Gaza Strip,palestine.Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted,from February 2019 to November 2019,among 383 infertile couples selected through convenient sampling.A valid and reliable Arabic version of the fertility quality of life questionnaire(FertiQoL)was used in data collection.One way analysis of variance and independent t-test were applied to compare between males and females.Results:The mean age of males and females was(34.54±8.54)years and(29.28±6.71)years,respectively.More than half of them had university degree(64%and 60%,respectively).The mean duration of infertility was(5.66±3.54)years.The mean males’scores of FertiQoL and its subscales(emotion,mind/body,social,core,tolerability,and treatment)were significantly higher than females’scores(P<0.05).Conclusions:Males have higher scores of FertiQoL and its subscales than females.The mean score of FertiQoL increases with better education,but decreases with increase of age,duration of marriage,duration of infertility and number of IVF attempts.Routine psychological assessment and counseling are necessary for infertile women taking into considerations factors affecting their quality of life.

Objective:This study was conducted to update the prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) isolates among human clinical S.aureus isolates recovered from Northern palestine,to evaluate the possible presence of vancomycin-Resistant S.aureus(VRSA) and vancomycin- intermediate resistant S.aureus strains(VISA) and to determine the antimicrobial susceptibilities of these clinical isolates.Methods:The in vitro activities of 11 antibiotics against 204 non-duplicate S.aureus isolates from clinical samples in North of palestine were determined by the diskdiffusion method.These samples were isolated between June 2006 and December 2007.The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of vancomycin for 115 methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) strains was carried out using the agar dilution method.Results:One hundred and fifteen(56.4%) of these isolates were MRSA and according to their antibiotic profile these are multidrug resistant(resistant to three or more non-p-lactam antibiotics). Ninety nine(43.6%) isolates were methicillin sensitive S.aureus(MSSA),forty four of MSSA isolates(44.4%) were multidrug resistant,while forty five(45.6%) were non multidrug resistant.Our results showed that the most common resistance(95.6%) was to penicillin.Two strains of MRSA have shown to be vancomycin- intermediate resistant,had MIC of 4μg/rnL and 8μg/mL and these vancomycin- intermediate resistant S.aureus strains(VISA) are resistant to all antibiotics tested.Conclusion:According to our information this is the first study report about VISA in palestine.

Strictly speaking,the economic relationship between Israel and palestine cannot be simply defined as neocolonial occupation,but are closely related to neo-colonialism,in terms of control,dependence,resistance,exploitation,monopoly and interference.Therefore,neo-colonialism can be used as a perspective to analyse the economic relations between palestine and Israel.Although the two sides have always been in a relatively hostile relationship,due to years of stalemate and Israeli economic control,the two sides have formed an interdependent economic relationship,where Israel has a relatively dominant position in the relations,thanks to its long-term occupation and control over the land,while the Palestinian economy will continue to remain highly dependent on Israel,despite its official efforts to achieve economic disengagement.In this case,Israel is reluctant to sever the relationship,and palestine is unable to decouple from the Israeli economy.The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic has made the prospects for Palestinian-Israeli peace talks even bleaker.As the peace process continues to stall,a settlement to resolve the dispute between Israel and the Palestinians remains highly unlikely.

Clinical Audit on the Provision of Diabetes Care in the Primary Care Setting by United Nations Relief and Works Agency for palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)

OBJECTIVE: United Nations Relief and Works Agency for palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) provides primary health care services including care for diabetes and hypertension, with limited resources under difficult circumstances in Gaza, West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. A total of 114,911 people with diabetes were registered with UNRWA health centres in 2011. The aim of this cross-sectional observational study was to assess the quality of diabetes care in the UNRWA primary health care centres. METHOD: The study population consisted of 1600 people with diabetes attending the 32 largest UNRWA health centres and treated there for at least one year. Between April and Sept. 2012 data from medical records, including results of clinical examinations and laboratory tests performed during the last one year, current management including self-care education and evidence of diabetes complications were collected and recorded in a previously validated data collection form (DCF). Patients were interviewed and clinically examined on the day of the audit and blood collected for HbA1c testing which was done at a central lab using High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method (HLC®-723G8 Tosoh Corporation, Japan). Data was transferred from paper records into a computer and analysed with Epi-info 2000. RESULTS: Type 1 diabetes was present in 4.3% and type 2 diabetes in 95.7%. Co-morbid hypertension was present in 68.5%;90.3% were either obese (64.0%) or overweight (26.3%). Clinical management of diabetes was largely in line with UNRWA’s technical instructions (TI) for diabetes. Records for 2 hour postprandial glucose (2 h PPG), serum cholesterol, serum creatinine, and urine protein analysis were available in 94.7%, 96.4%, 91.4% and 87.5%, cases, respectively. Records of annual fundoscopic eye examination were available in 47.3% cases but foot examinations were less well documented.
