As the crown of the scholar's four jewels,the brush has occupied a cherished position in the culture of traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy since its invention.In virtual painting,virtual brush modeling plays the most important role.A powerful virtual brush model can truly reflect the characteristics of a real brush and enhance the reality of virtual painting.By reviewing the state of the art in virtual brush modeling,we summarize the basic principles,merits,and drawbacks of typical modeling methods,and discuss simulation results based on empirical methods and physical methods separately.The influences of brush-paper,paper-ink,and human-computer interactive devices on virtual brush modeling are analyzed briefly.The main chal-lenges and problems in virtual painting are analyzed,and the prospects for research on virtual brush modeling in the future are put forward.

This paper presents a direct 3D painting algorithm for polygonalmodels in 3D object-space with a metaball-based paintbrush in virtual environment.The user is allowed to directly manipulate the parameters used to shade the surfaceof the 3D shape by applying the pigment to its surface with direct 3D manipulationthrough a 3D flying mouse.

“The Infinite Universe of WUJI”follows a timeline to show the historic turning point from the second half of the 19th century to the mid-20th century.It displays 62 masterpieces by 46 representative artists of the 20th century,including Vincent Willem Van Gogh,Amedeo Modigliani,Henri Matisse,Pablo Picasso,Wassily Kandinsky,Giorgio Morandi,Rene Magritte,Giorgio de Chirico and Lucio Fontana.They came from different schools of painting such as Belle Epoque,post-impressionism,fauvism,cubism,futurism,abstractism,surrealism,spatialism and art informal.This shows the development and change of Westerm painting in the past century.This is the first time in China to systematically sort out,research and display European modern and contemporary art.

Body aesthetics believes that the body and spirit are one,and that spirit and consciousness arise in the body,so we should pay attention to the feeling of the body.F.Bacon’s paintings take the body as the main content of expression,trying to depict an“image”that can trigger physical feelings.Bacon values the movement of the body in painting,the accidental nature of painting,and believes that art could break the shackles of society on the body.Body aesthetics is well interpreted in Bacon’s paintings.
