Processes Controlling the Carbonate Chemistry of Surface Seawater Along the 150°E Transect in the Northwest pacific ocean

The problem of ocean acidification caused by the increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration is becoming increasingly prominent.Field observation in the northwest pacific ocean was carried out along the 150°E transect in November 2019.The distribution characteristics and influencing factors of the surface seawater carbonate chemistry,including dissolved inorganic carbon(DIC),total alkalinity(TA),pH,partial pressure of carbon dioxide(pCO_(2))and aragonite saturation state(Ω_(arag))were investigated.DIC and TA ranged from 1915 to 2014μmol kg^(−1)and 2243 to 2291μmol kg^(−1),respectively;DIC in general decreased with decreasing latitude,but TA had no clear latitudinal gradient.pCO_(2)values increased with the decrease of latitude and were all below the atmospheric pCO_(2)level,ranging from 332 to 387μatm.pH on the total hydrogen ion concentration scale(pH_(T))decreased with the decrease of latitude in the range of 8.044–8.110,whileΩ_(arag) increased with the decrease of latitude in the range of 2.61–3.88,suggesting that the spatial distributions of pH_(T) andΩ_(arag) were out of phase.Compared with the present,the predicted values of pH_(T) and Ω_(arag) by the end of this century would decrease remarkedly;larger declines were found in the higher pH_(T) and Ω_(arag) regions,resulting in the differences along the meridional gradient becoming smaller for bothpH_(T) and Ω_(arag).

Dogtooth tuna,Gymnosarda unicolor were sampled off the east coast of Australia(southwest pacific ocean)from 2007 to 2012.Ages were determined by examining thin transverse sections of their sagittal otoliths and were based on counts of alternating opaque and translucent zones(annual growth increments).Growth was rapid during the first year of life,after which growth in length was much reduced.Parameters of the constrained von Bertalanffy growth function(fork length-at-age)were L∞=1164.77(mm,FL)and K=0.44 year^(-1).Preliminary estimates of longevity indicate a maximum observed age of at least 20 years.There was a high degree of variation in the observed length and age of sexual maturity for G.unicolor.Despite this variation,the size at 50%maturity for female G.unicolor estimated in this study was 713 mm FL(<2 years of age).The diet of G.unicolor is very broad and covers a range of fish species.The life history characteristics of G.unicolor overall,indicate that this species may be somewhat resilient to fishing.However,reports of localised depletions,in association with heavy targeting by sports fishers,low effective population sizes and patchy recruitment indicate that this species is particularly vulnerable to overfishing.

BIFURCATION OF THE NORTH EQUATORIAL CURRENT DERIVED FROM ALTIMETRY IN THE pacific ocean

The gridded （1/3°＊1/3°） altimetry data from October 1992 through December 2004 were analyzed to study the seasonal and interannual variabilities of the bifurcation of the North Equatorial Current （NEC） at the surface in the western North pacific ocean. Calculations show that on annual average the bifurcation occurs at about 13.4°N at the surface. The geostrophic flow derived from Sea Surface Height （SSH） data shows that the southernmost latitude of the NEC bifurcation at the surface is about 12.9°N in June and the northernmost latitude is about 14.1°N in December. Correlation analyses between the bifurcation latitude and the Southern Oscillation Index （SOl） suggest that the bifurcation latitude is highly correlated with the E1 Nino/Southern Oscillation （ENSO） events. During the E1 Nino years the bifurcation of the NEC takes place at higher latitudes and vice versa.

Interannual variations of the air-sea carbon dioxide exchange in the different regions of the pacific ocean

Interannual variations of the air-sea CO2 exchange from 1965 to 2000 in the pacific ocean are studied with a pacific ocean model. Two numerical experiments are performed, including the control run that is forced by climatological monthly mean physical data and the climate-change run that is forced by interannually varying monthly mean physical data. Climatological monthly winds are used in both runs to calculate the coefficient of air-sea CO2 exchange. The analysis through the differences between the two runs shows that in the tropical pacific the variation of export production induced by interannual variations of the physical fields is negatively correlated with that of the air-sea CO2 flux, while there is no correlation or a weak positive correlation in the subtropical North and South pacific. It indicates that the variation of the physical fields can modulate the variation of the air-sea CO2 flux in converse ways in the tropical pacific by changing the direct transport and biochemical process. Under the interannually varying monthly mean forcing, the simulated EOF 1 of the air-sea CO2 flux is basically consistent with that of sea surface temperature （SST） in the tropical pacific, but contrary in the two subtropical pacific ocean. The correlation coefficient between the regionally integrated air-sea CO2 flux and area-mean SST shows that when the air-sea CO2 flux lags SST by about 5 months, the positive coefficient in the three regions is largest, indicating that in the tropical pacific or on the longer time scale in the three regions, physical processes control the fiux-SST relationship.

Evaluation of the simulation capability of the Wavewatch Ⅲ model for pacific ocean wave

Wave climate analysis and other applications for the pacific ocean require a reliable wave hindcast. Five source and sink term packages in the Wavewatch III model （v3.14 and v4.18） are compared and assessed in this study through comprehensive observations, including altimeter significant wave height, advanced synthetic aperture radar swell, and buoy wave parameters and spectrum. In addition to the evaluation of typically used integral parameters, the spectra partitioning method contributes to the detailed wave system and wave maturity validation. The modified performance evaluation method （PS） effectively reduces attribute numbers and facilitates the overall assessment. To avoid possible misleading results in the root mean square error-based validations, another indicator called HH （indicating the two authors） is also calculated to guarantee the consistency of the results. The widely used Tolman and Chalikov （TC） package is still generally efficient in determining the integral properties of wave spectra but is physically deficient in explaining the dissipation processes. The ST4 package performs well in overall wave parameters and significantly improves the accuracy of wave systems in the open ocean. Meanwhile, the newly published ST6 package is slightly better in determining swell energy variations. The two packages （ACC350 and BIA） obtained from Wavewatch III v3.14 exhibit large scatters at different sea states. The three most ideal packages are further examined in terms of reproducing wave- induced momentum flux from the perspective of transport. Stokes transport analysis indicates that ST4 is the closest to the NDBC-buoy-spectrum-based transport values, and TC and ST6 tend to overestimate and underestimate the transport magnitude, respectively, in swell mixed areas. This difference must be considered, particularly in air-wave-current coupling research and upper ocean analysis. The assessment results provide guidance for the selection of ST4 for use in a background pacific ocean hindcast for high wave climate

Long-Term Trend in Potential Vorticity Intrusion Events over the pacific ocean： Role of Global Mean Temperature Rise

In this study, we examine a long-term increasing trend in subtropical potential vorticity （PV） intrusion events over the pacific ocean in relation to the global mean temperature rise, based on multiple reaualysis datasets. The fre- quency of the PV intrusions is closely related to the upper-tropospheric equatorial westerly duct and the subtropical jet （STJ）. An overall strengthening of the westerly duct and weakening of the STJ are found to be driven by the warming-induced strengthening of Walker circulation and regional changes in Hadley circulation on multi-dccadal timescalc, leading to an increase in the PV intrusion frequency over the tropics. The results are robust in all datasets. The multi-decadal strengthening in the pacific Walker circulation is consistent with the global mean temperature rise. In this way, the PV intrusions are correlated with the wanning related global mean temperuate rise. When the interan- nual variability of ENSO is removed from the intrusion time series, the long-term trend in PV intrusions due to ex- ternal forcing associated with anthropogenic warming （global mean temperature rise） becomes clearer. The link between the global mean temperature rise and intrusion frequency is further verified by performing a correlation ana- lysis between the two. The significant （〉 95%） correlation coefficient is 0.85, 0.94, 0.84, 0.83, and 0.84 for ERA-40, ERA-Interim, NCEP-NCAR, JRA-55, and JRA-25, respectively. This unequivocally indicates that the global mean temperature rise can explain around 69%--88% of the variance related to the lung-term increase in PV intrusion fre- quency over the pacific ocean.

Wind-forced equatorial wave dynamics of the pacific ocean during 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 E1 Nino events

The equatorial wave dynamics of interannual sea level variations between 2014/2015 and2015/2016 El Nino events are compared using the Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics,Institute of Atmospheric Physics Climate ocean Model(LICOM) forced by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction(NCEP) reanalysis I wind stre s s and heat flux during 2000-2015.In addition,the LICOM can reproduce the interannual variability of sea surface temperature anomalies(SSTA) and sea level anomalies(SLA) along the equator over the pacific ocean in comparison with the Hadley center and altimetric data well.We extracted the equatorial wave coefficients of LICOM simulation to get the contribution to SLA by multiplying the meridional wave structure.During 2014/2015 El Nino event,upwelling equatorial Kelvin waves from the western boundary in April2014 reach the eastern pacific ocean,which weakened SLA in the eastern pacific ocean.However,no upwelling equatorial Kelvin waves from the western boundary of the pacific ocean could reach the eastern boundary during the 2015/2016 El Nino event.Linear wave model results also demonstrate that upwelling equatorial Kelvin waves in both 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 from the western boundary can reach the eastern boundary.However,the contribution from stronger westerly anomalies forced downwelling equatorial Kelvin waves overwhelmed that from the upwelling equatorial Kelvin waves from the western boundary in 2015.Therefore,the western boundary reflection and weak westerly wind burst inhibited the growth of the 2014/2015 El Nino event.The disclosed equatorial wave dynamics are important to the simulation and prediction of ENSO events in future studies.

Changes in runoff and sediment load from major Chinese rivers to the pacific ocean over the period 1955-2010

Changes in runoff and sediment loads to the pacific ocean from 10 major Chinese rivers are presented in this paper.To quantitatively assess trends in runoff and sediment loads,a parameter called the "Trend Ratio 7"" has been defined in this paper.To summarize total runoff and sediment load from these rivers,data from 17 gauging stations for the duration 1955 to 2010 has been standardized,and the missing data have been interpolated by different approaches according to specific conditions.Over the observed 56-year study period,there is a quite stable change in total runoff.Results show that the mean annual runoff flux entering the pacific ocean from these rivers is approximately 1,425billion cubic meters.It is found that all northern rivers within semi-arid and transitional zones including the Songhua,Liaohe,Haihe,Yellow and Huaihe rivers present declining trends in water discharge.Annual runoff in all southern rivers within humid zones including the Yangtze,Qiantang,Minjiang,Pearl and Lancang rivers docs not change much,except for the Qiantang River whose annual runoff slightly increases.The annual sediment loads of all rivers show significant declining trends;the exceptions are the Songhua and Lancang rivers whose annual sediment loads have increasing trends.However,the mean annual sediment flux carried into the pacific ocean decreased from 2,026million tonnes to 499 million tonnes over the 56-ycar period.During this time there were 4 distinct decreasing phases.The decrease in annual sediment flux is due to the integrated effects of human activity and climate change.The reduction in sediment flux makes it easy for reservoir operation;however,the decrease in sediment flux also creates problems,such as channel erosion,river bank collapse and the retreat of the delta area.

The Effect of Regional ocean-Atmosphere Coupling on the Long-term Variability in the pacific ocean

A fully coupled ocean-atmosphere model is applied to highlight the mechanism of the long-term variability （including decadal and longer time scales） in the pacific ocean. We are interested in the effect of ocean-atmosphere coupling of different regions during these processes. The control run successfully simulates the pacific long-term variability, whose leading modes are the pacific （inter） Decadal Oscillation （PDO） and the North pacific mode （NPM）. Furthermore, three numerical experiments are conducted, shutting down the ocean-atmosphere coupling in the North pacific, the tropical pacific, and the South pacific, respectively. The results show that regional ocean-atmosphere coupling is not only important to the strength of local long-term SST variability but also has an influence on the variability further afield. In both the tropical pacific and North pacific, this local effect is the main control, which is much more obvious in the tropical regions. The existence of the PDO is extremely dependent on the coupling in the tropical pacific. However, extratropical coupling, in particular that in the North pacific, is also important to form its spatial pattern and strengthen the variability in some tropical areas. For the NPM, its existence is primarily determined by the coupling in the North pacific.

Period　components　in　the　monthly　mean　sea　level　variations　in　the　pacific　ocean

To study the period components in the monthly mean sea level variations in the pacific ocean, this paper analyses the monthly mean series of 236 tide gauge stations in the pacific on the basis of the improved analytical method of the monthly mean sea level period signals. The results show that the oscillation periods of the sea level series are not fixed, but vary with stations. This paper also discusses the existences of the quasi-2 years atmospheric oscillation period, the 3～7 a period related to the El Nino events, sunspots, double sunspots and the 25～30 a overlength oscillation periods. The corresponding amplitudes and initial phase angles as well as the linear trend coefficient are obtained by using significant period components plus the linear trend to fit the monthly mean sea level series. A conspicuous features of the results are found,i. e.,taking 25°～30°S as the axial line in the pacific, the annual lags gradually increase to the north and the south respectively, depicting a variation trend of partial symmetry. But in China seas, the north and south distributional trend of the annual period lags is almost opposite to those in most parts of the pacific ocean. In the low-latitude zone where El Nino events occur or impose more significant effects, the ratio of the sum of amplitudes of various periods within 2～7 a to the annual amplitude is equal to or more than 1. 0, while that of the sum of amplitudes of periods larger than 8 a to the annual amplitude is equal to or more than 0. 5. This suggests that the dominant role of annual amplitude in the monthly mean sea level series of this region has declined and that, correspondingly, there exist significant period components of El Nino events as well as the long-period oscillations of quasi-10 a and over 10 a. In the high-latitude zone, off China, in North America north of 40°N and the coast of Japan, the annual period oscillation occupies a dominant position in the various period components.
