The advertisement calls in anurans play an important role in female mate choice,and are regarded as one of the key characters responsible for reproductive isolation and delimit species in taxonomicaliy complex groups.The differences in the calls across species should be correlated with many factors.We analyzed the geographic variation in the advertisement calls of the giant spiny frog paa spinosa,which has a wide distribution and is mainly found in southwestern China, southern China,and northern Vietnam.We assessed the seven call properties of male frogs from the three different geographic areas,including Lanxi(LX),Jixi(JX),and Yongxiu(YX).Call duration,note number,dominant frequency,Formant 1(F),and Formant 2(F) were highly variable among the three geographic populations.The 1-note,2-note,and 8-note calls were presented in this paper as they have not been described before.The calls of the three localities P. spinosa were compared with those of P.yunnanensis from Qujing(QJ),which has similar distribution to P.spinosa.Although the advertisement calls variation between P.spinosa and P. yunnanensis was found to be higher than the variation among the three populations,we can distinguish between the three localities and prove the P.spinosa exist cryptic species through the differences in call properties.The recording of calls can be used as a basis for the taxonomy of P. spinosa and an exploration for revealing the biodiversity of frogs.

Global climate change has been considered to be one of the key factors leading to declines and losses of amphibian populations.Though global warming is one of the acknowledged causes of fluctuations of amphibian population worldwide,unseasonal sharp fall in air temperature as result of global climate change may also affect the survival and stability of amphibian population severely.In this article,we have investigated how temperature fluctuation affected the physiology of giant spiny frog (paa spinosa).The winter temperatures experienced by wild giant spiny frog in natural winter in the local Mountain of Kaihua in Zhejiang Province was monitored,and then replicated in subsequent experiments.The frogs were divided into two groups,one group served as a control maintained at 22℃, a second group of frogs were subjected to a temperature fluctuation of cold shock(4℃/12h)and recovery(22℃/12h)for seven days.Six frogs were sampled after 4h,12h cold shock,12 h recovery at first day and after 12h cold shock,12h recovery at seventh day.The results showed that the survival temperature range of wild overwintering was between 0℃-14℃in 12/1/2009-3/31/2010,and minimum and maximum temperature ranged between 0℃-4℃and 10℃-14℃respectively. Upon temperature fluctuation,no statistically significant differences were found in the control groups of all parameters at any time of the experiment.The respiratory burst of spleen macrophages and the peripheral blood phagocytic activity were both inhibited after cold shock,and restored to control level after recovery at 22℃at the first day,and remained the level after temperature fluctuation for seven days.The gastric lysozyme activity and the relative hsp70 intensity showed similar results except significant decrease in comparison to that of the control group at the seventh day.The malonaldehyde (MDA)content,the glutathione(GSH)content and the activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD)of liver were significantly increased after cold shock for 4h,and the glutathione(GSH)content and the activity of su
