By analyzing some mechanical quantities and typical dynamic testing results for similar models, this paper studies the scale effect pertaining to similar models made of strain-rate dependent materials, and also describes the effect of plastic strain rate on the mechanical behavior of similar models under dynamic loading. It has been pointed out that the strain-rate sensitivity for dynamic behavior increases with the decrease of the characteristic dimension.

AIM:Considerable controversy surrounds the adoption of endoscopic sphincterotomy(ES)to facilitate the placement of 10F plastic stents(PS)and to reduce the risk of pancreatitis The aim of the study was to assess the possible advantages of ES before PS placement. METHODS:From 3/1996 to 6/2001,172 consecutive patients, who underwent placement of a single 10F-polyethylene stent for inoperable malignant strictures of the common bile duct,were randomly assigned to 2 *** group A(96 patients),a ES was performed before PS placement In Group B,96 patients had PS *** complications(within 30 d)and late effects(from 30 d to stent replacement)were *** interval was defined as the period between PS placement and obstruction or *** success of stent replacement in the 2 groups was evaluated. RESULTS:Stent insertion was successful in 95.8%(92/96) of the pts in group A and in 93.7%(90/96)of the patients in group B(P>0.05).Early complications were more frequent in patients who underwent ES(6.5% vs4.4%)but the data were not significant(P>0.05).In group A pancreatitis developed in two patients and bleeding in three;whereas pancreatitis occurred in 2 patients in group *** were managed *** procedure related mortality *** late complications were acute cholangitis due to stent *** performed a stent replacement in 87 patients that was successful in 84 cases without differences between groups. CONCLUSION:Sphincterotomy does not seem to be necessary for placement of 10F-PS in patients with malignant common bile duct obstruction.

Novozymes, a global bioinnovation company based in Denmark,and Dacheng Group, a major starch processing company based inChina, announced an agreement to make plastics from agriculturalwaste. The two companies have agreed to expand their cooperationin developing biochemicals derived from biomass and to promotethe industrialization of plant-based glycol. Glycols arebiochemicals used in household cleaning products, cosmetics, andused as building blocks for making polyesters and *** the agreement, Novozymes will provide Dacheng Groupwith knowledge and the enzymes for converting biomass like cornstover, wheat and rice straw into sugar. Dacheng Group will thenconvert the sugar into glycol. Dacheng Group has the first commercializedfacility in the world to mass produce plant-basedglycols. The facility, located in northeastern China, is expected toproduce plant-based biochemicals within a few years.

Effects of Ultrasonic Waves during Resin Impregnation on the Mechanical Properties of Unidirectional Composite Materials

Effects of ultrasonic vibrations on mechanical properties of fiber reinforced plastics were investigated during molding resin impregnation process in vacuum assisted resin transfer molding.?The vacuum bag including the preformed each?non-crimp fabrics (carbon and glass fibers)?was placed in a water bath of an ultrasonic wave generator during resin impregnation. The mechanical properties of the laminates were evaluated?through the mechanical strength tests and scanning electron microscope?(SEM) observation. The results revealed that ultrasonic waves improved transverse tensile, flexural, interlaminar shear, and compressive strengths of the carbon fiber (CF) laminates and interlaminar shear and compressive strengths of the glass fiber (GF) laminates. It was found from SEM observation that the fracture modes of the CF and GF laminates processed using ultrasonic waves were resin fracture. Accordingly, the adhesion of the fiber/resin interface was improved by oscillating ultrasonic vibration during resin impregnation, leading to an increase of the interface strength.
