Synergistic Interdecadal Evolution of Precipitation over Eastern China and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation during 1951-2015

By using the multi-taper method(MTM)of singular value decomposition(SVD),this study investigates the interdecadal evolution(10-to 30-year cycle)of precipitation over eastern China from 1951 to 2015 and its relationship with the North Pacific sea surface temperature(SST).Two significant interdecadal signals,one with an 11-year cycle and the other with a 23-year cycle,are identified in both the precipitation and SST fields.Results show that the North Pacific SST forcing modulates the precipitation distribution over China through the effects of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation(pdo)-related anomalous Aleutian low on the western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH)and Mongolia high(MH).During the development stage of the pdo cold phase associated with the 11-year cycle,a weakened WPSH and MH increased the precipitation over the Yangtze River Basin,whereas an intensified WPSH and MH caused the enhanced rain band to move northward to North China during the decay stage.During the development stage of the pdo cold phase associated with the 23-year cycle,a weakened WPSH and MH increased the precipitation over North China,whereas an intensified WPSH and the weakened MH increased the precipitation over South China during the decay stage.The 11-year and 23-year variabilities contribute differently to the precipitation variations in the different regions of China,as seen in the 1998flooding case.The 11-year cycle mainly accounts for precipitation increases over the Yangtze River Basin,while the 23-year cycle is responsible for the precipitation increase over Northeast China.These results have important implications for understanding how the pdo modulates the precipitation distribution over China,helping to improve interdecadal climate prediction.

为准确识别气候变化条件下气象干湿特征及与大气环流的关系,基于华北地区64个气象站点的实测数据,以标准化降水蒸散发指数(SPEI)为干湿指标,采用气候倾向率、Mann-Kendall趋势分析等方法,研究了1961~2020年中国华北地区干湿的时空变化特征,分析了厄尔尼诺-南方涛动(ENSO)与太平洋年代际振荡(pdo)对华北干湿变化的影响。结果表明:1)近60年华北地区降水量有10~20a的周期变化,SPEI指数在波动中未表现出明显的线性增长,近20年华北干旱化的趋势有所缓解。2)轻度干旱(湿润)、中等干旱(湿润)发生的频率较高,严重干旱(湿润)、极端干旱(湿润)发生的频率较低。华北地区多数站点湿润发生频率大于干旱发生频率。3)在空间分布上,华北干湿频次具有明显的空间分异,湿润高频区在山西东部、河北中南部、河南北部、山东丘陵西部,京津地区、河北中北部和山西西部干旱频次相对较高。4)华北干湿交替发生并受到多重周期性规律控制。华北SPEI序列在4a、23a和34a左右尺度波动十分明显。5)华北20a左右的干湿交替变化是大气环流异常的结果。EI Ni1o期间干旱多发;La Ni1a期间湿润多发。华北湿润和干旱分别对应pdo冷暖位相,华北SPEI与海温距平(SSTA)在年际和夏季尺度上显著负相关,夏季和冬季华北SPEI与pdo显著负相关。

Ocean-atmosphere Teleconnections Play a Key Role in the Interannual Variability of Seasonal Gross Primary Production in China

Since the 1950s,the terrestrial carbon uptake has been characterized by interannual variations,which are mainly determined by interannual variations in gross primary production(GPP).Using an ensemble of seven-member TRENDY(Trends in Net Land-Atmosphere Carbon Exchanges)simulations during 1951-2010,the relationships of the interannual variability of seasonal GPP in China with the sea surface temperature(SST)and atmospheric circulations were investigated.The GPP signals that mostly relate to the climate forcing in terms of Residual Principal Component analysis(hereafter,R-PC)were identified by separating out the significant impact from the linear trend and the GPP memory.Results showed that the seasonal GPP over China associated with the first R-PC1(the second R-PC2)during spring to autumn show a monopole(dipole or tripole)spatial structure,with a clear seasonal evolution for their maximum centers from springtime to summertime.The dominant two GPP R-PC are significantly related to Sea Surface Temperature(SST)variability in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean and the North Pacific Ocean during spring to autumn,implying influences from the El Niño-Southern Oscillation(ENSO)and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation(pdo).The identified SST and circulation factors explain 13%,23%and 19%of the total variance for seasonal GPP in spring,summer and autumn,respectively.A clearer understanding of the relationships of China’s GPP with ocean-atmosphere teleconnections over the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean should provide scientific support for achieving carbon neutrality targets.

Nitrogen-doped graphene supported Pd@pdo core- shell clusters for C-C coupling reactions

The introduction of nitrogen significantly decreases the metal particle size and improves the performance of metal-based graphene-supported catalysts. In this work, the density functional theory is used to understand the interaction between nitrogen-doped graphene and Pd@pdo clusters. Experiments show that small size Pd@pdo clusters (1–2 nm) can be grown uniformly on nitrogen-doped graphene sheets by a facile oxidation-reduction method. The nanoscale interaction relationship between nitrogen-doped graphene and Pd@pdo clusters is investigated through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectra (XAS). The composite catalysts are applied in Suzuki-Miyaura reactions giving high yields and good structural stability. These results have potential impact in design and optimization of future high performance catalyst materials for cross coupling reactions.

Interdecadal Change in the Eurasia–Pacific Anti-Phase Relation of Atmospheric Mass and Its Possible Link with pdo

Based on the known climatic shift that occurred in 1976, we divide the present study period into two epochs： epoch-I, for 1958 1976; and epoch-II, for 1977-2002. Using ERA-40 and the 20th century reanalysis data, we in- vestigate the interdecadal change in the Eurasia-Pacific anti-phase relation （EPAR） pattern of atmospheric mass （AM） during boreal winter before and after 1976. It is found that anomalous AM over lands is highly and negatively correlated with anomalous AM over oceans in the Northern Hemisphere during the winter season. This correlation does not change much from epoch-I to epoch-II. However, the correlation pattern of surface air pressure anomalies with variations of anomalous AM over lands changes remarkably from epoch-I to epoch-lI; the EPAR pattern emerges evidently in the later period, whereas it is not significant in epoch-I. The occurrence of the EPAR pattern in epoch-II may be attributable to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation （pdo）. The pdo may modulate the EPAR pattern in two ways. Firstly, the interdecadal component of the pdo as a background may modulate the intensities of the Aleut- ian low, East Asian trough, and westerly flow, acting as a waveguide during the warm phase （epoch-Ⅱ） of the pdo. Secondly, the interannual variations of sea surface temperature anomalies in the North Pacific, in association with the pdo, may affect the interannual variations of AM, which facilitates the existence of the EPAR pattern in epoch-Ⅱ only. With the teleconnection pattern having changed before and after 1976, winter climate anomalies, including rain- fall and temperature, are found to be different in many regions in the Northern Hemisphere between epoch-I and epoch-Ⅱ. All the results of the present work are meaningful for a better understanding of climate anomalies during boreal winter.

Pacific decadal oscillation impact on East China precipitation and its imprint in new geological documents

This paper briefly introduces the history of the study of the Pacific decadal oscillation(pdo) and explores the relationship between the pdo and sediment grain size from two typical sediment cores from the lower Changjiang(Yangtze River) and Huanghe(Yellow River) estuaries. It is found that the median grain sizes of both cores exhibit relatively high correlation with the pdo. This is because the pdo causes interdecadal variability of precipitation in the East Asia Monsoon region, thus changing the hydrodynamics in both the Changjiang and Huanghe catchments, eventually resulting in variation of sediment grain size. Our analysis also revealed that during different phases of the pdo, the sediment grain size of the Changjiang and Huanghe estuaries showed different variations in cold and warm pdo phases. This is related to movement of the precipitation center driven by the shift in different pdo phases. Moreover, we compared more high resolution geological proxies with the pdo, including stalagmites and tree rings, in East China over the past century. The results indicate that variations of studied geological proxies are generally well correlated with the pdo but have some differences. Finally, longer variations of sediment grain sizes in the Changjiang and Huanghe estuaries are compared with a reconstructed pdo over the last 200 years;sediment grain sizes were still correlated with the pdo, implying that sediment grain size may be used as a new proxy for studying the long-term behavior of the pdo. This result supports previous knowledge of the pdo impact on East China climate evolution and offers a new proxy for further pdo study. Our study will improve paleoenvironment reconstruction in East China on a decadal time scale and benefit future climatic predictions.

Tuning performance of Pd/Sn_(0.9)Ce_(0.1)O_2 catalyst for methane combustion by optimizing calcination temperature of support

A series of 0.2 wt% Pd/Sn_(0.9)Ce_(0.1)O_2 catalysts were prepared by impregnation method based on the presynthesis of Sn_(0.9)Ce_(0.1)O_2 support prepared by co-precipitation method, and then characterized by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller(BET), X-ray diffraction(XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), Raman, CO chemical adsorption and hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction(H_2-TPR) techniques. The effect of calcination temperature of the composite oxide support on the catalytic performances of the Pd/Sn_(0.9)Ce_(0.1)O_2 catalyst for the CH_4 total oxidation was studied. It is found that the catalytic activity of the Pd/Sn_(0.9)Ce_(0.1)O_2 catalyst increases with the increase in calcination temperature of the Pd/Sn_(0.9)Ce_(0.1)O_2 support. The 0.2 wt% Pd/Sn_(0.9)Ce_(0.1)O_2/1100 catalyst(the Pd/Sn_(0.9)Ce_(0.1)O_2 support was calcined at 1100 ℃) exhibits the best reactive activity(T_(10)= 255 ℃). The excellent activity of the 0.2 wt% Pd/Sn_(0.9)Ce_(0.1)O_2/1100 catalyst should be attributed to the high reducibility of pdo, the excellent oxygen mobility of the support and the high content of active Pd^(2+) species on the Pd/Sn_(0.9)Ce_(0.1)O_2 catalyst.
