p-wave tomography of crust and upper mantle under Southern California: Influence of topography of Moho discontinuity

We use 146 422 p-wave arrival times from 6 347 local earthquakes recorded by the Southern California SeismicNetwork to determine a detailed three-dimensional p-wave velocity structure at 0～35 km depth. We have takeninto account the Moho depth variations, which were obtained by seismological methods. Checkerboard tests sug-gest that our inversion results are reliable. Our models provide new information on regional geological structuresof Southern California. At shallow depths p-wave velocity structure correlates with surface geological features andexpresses well variations of surface topography of the mountains and basins. The velocity structure at each layer ischaracterized by block structures bounded by large faults. Ventura Basin, Los Angeles Basin, Mojave Desert, pen-insular Ranges, San Joaquin Valley, Sierra Nevada, and Salton Trough show respectively all-round block. SanAndreas Fault becomes an obvious boundary of the region. To its southwest, the velocity is higher, and there arestrong heterogeneity and deeper seismicity; but to its northeast, the velocity is lower and shows less variation thanto the southwest, the seismicity is shallower. To investigate the effect of the Moho geometry we conducted inver-sions for two cases: one for flat Moho geometry, another for a Moho with lateral depth variations. We found thatthe topography of the Moho greatly affects the velocity structure of the middle and lower crust. When the Mohotopography is considered, a more reasonable tomographic result can be obtained and the resulting 3-D velocitymodel fits the data better.

Effects of marine sediment on the response of a submerged floating tunnel due to p- wave incidence

Submerged floating tunnel (SFT) is a novel type traffic structure for crossing long strait and deep lakes. To investigate the dynamic pressure acting on an SFT under compression (p) wave incidence, a theoretical analysis model considering marine sediment effect has been proposed. Based on displacement potential functions, the reflection and refraction coefficients of p wave in different media are derived. Numerical examples are employed to illustrate the effects of the thickness of sediment layer, the incident p wave angle, the tether stiffness and spacing, and the permeability of the sediment on the dynamic pressure loading on the SFT. The results show that dynamic pressure is related to the saturation of sediment and affected by the thickness of sediment. The partially saturated sediment will amplify the dynamic pressure loading on the SFT, and the resonance frequency increases a little with the fully saturated sediment. Besides, increasing the tether stiffness and decreasing in the tether spacing will lead to a dynamic pressure falling. Deepening the SFT position and reducing the permeability of the sediment are effective measures to reduce dynamic pressure acting on the SFT.

A Study of One S- and One p-wave Heavy Meson Interaction in a Chiral Quark Model

The analytical forms of the interaction potentials between one pseudo-scalar/vector and one scalar/tensor/axial-vector heavy mesons are deduced based on a chiral quark model. Our results explicitly show the attractive property between the two heavy mesons. Consequently, a series of possible molecular states are obtained. It is expected that our study might shed some light on the popular discussions of the newly observed XYZ states.

Spin-polarized quasiparticle transport in ferromagnet/insulator/p-wave superconductor junction

We have studied the tunneling conductance in ferromagnet/insulator/p-wave superconductor junctions,taking into account the rough interface scattering effect. We find that there exist zero-bias conductance peaks and single-minimum structure in tunneling spectroscopy. As the exchange energy increases,the Andreev reflection is always suppressed and the differential conductance decreases. The differential conductance depends on the barrier strength and the roughness at the interface.

Forecasting Fractures in Coal Seams by Using Azimuthal Anisotropy from p-wave Seismic Data

If the thickness of coal seams and the lithology of both roofs and floors of coal seams have not changed at all or only a little, then it is thought that the elastic anisotropy of coal seams depends mainly on fractures and obeys the horizontally symmetric model of an azimuth anisotropy. For a fixed offset, the amplitude A of the reflection p-wave and the cosine of 2φ has an approximately linear relation, (φ is the source-detector azimuth with respect to the fracture strike. Based on this relationship, many things can be done, such as the extraction of macro bins, the correction of residual normal moveout, the formation of azimuth gather, the transformation and normalization of azimuth gathers and the extraction of reflection wave amplitudes of coal seams. The least squares method was used to inverse theoretically the direction and density of fractures of coal seams. The result is in good agreement with the regional geological structure, indicating that the azimuth anisotropic analysis of the p-wave is feasible in evaluating the density and direction of fractures in coal seams.

Three-dimensional p-wave velocity structure of the crust beneath Hainan Island and its adjacent regions,China

Using over 3 500 first p arrival times recorded by nine digital seismic stations from Hainan Digital Seismic Net-work during 1999～2005,a 3-D p-wave velocity model of the crust under Hainan Island and adjacent regions has been determined. The results show that the pattern of velocity anomalies in the shallower upper crust is somewhat associated with the surface geological tectonics in the region. A relative low-velocity anomaly appears north of the Wangwu-Wenjiao fault zone and a relative high-velocity anomaly appears south of the Wangwu-Wenjiao fault zone,corresponding to the depressed areas in north Hainan Island,where many volcanoes are frequently active and geothermal values are relatively higher,and the uplifted and stable regions in central and south of the Hainan Is-land. In the middle and lower crust velocities are relatively lower in east Hainan than those in west Hainan,possi-bly suggesting the existence of the upwelling of hot materials from the mantle in east Hainan. The pattern of veloc-ity anomalies also indicates that NW faults,i.e.,the puqian-Qinglan fault,may be shallower,while the E-W Wangwu-Wenjiao fault may be deeper,which perhaps extends down to Moho depth or deeper.

Studies of e^+e~→D_s^+■^((*)0)K^-and the p-wave charmed-strange mesons are performed based on an e^+e^-collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 567 pb^(-1) collected with the BESIII detector at s^(1/2)=4.600 GeV. The processes of e^+e^-→D_s^+■^(*0)K^- and D_s^+■~0K^- are observed for the first time and are found to be dominated by the modes D_s^+D_(s1)(2536)^-and D_s^+D_(s2)~*(2573)^-, respectively. The Born cross sections are measured to be σ~B(e^+e^-→D_s^+■^(*0)K^-) =(10.1±2.3±0.8) pb and σ~B(e^+e^-→D_s^+■~0K^-) =(19.4±2.3± 1.6) pb, and the products of Born cross section and the decay branching fraction are measured to be σ~B(e^+e^-→D_s^+D_(s1)(2536)^-+c.c.)·B(D_(s1)(2536)^-→■^(*0)K^-)=(7.5±1.8±0.7) pb and σ~B(e^+e^-→D_s^+D_(s2)~*(2573)^-+ c.c.)·B(D_(s2)~*(2573)^-→■~0 K^-)=(19.7 ± 2.9 ±2.0) pb. For the D_(s1)(2536)^-and D_(s2)~*(2573)^-mesons, the masses and widths are measured to be M(D_(s1)(2536)^-)=(2537.7±0.5 ±3.1) MeV/c2, Γ(D_(s1)(2536)^-) =(1.7 ±1.2 ±0.6)MeV, and M(D_(s2)~*(2573)^-)=(2570.7±2.0 ±1.7) MeV/c^2, Γ(D_(s2)~*(2573)^-)=(17.2 ±3.6 ±1.1) MeV. The spin-parity of the D_(s2)~*(2573)^-meson is determined to be J^p= 2^+. In addition, the processes e^+e^-→D_s^+■^((*)0)K^-are searched for using the data samples taken at four(two) center-of-mass energies between 4.416(4.527) and 4.575 GeV, and upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the cross sections are determined.

Early-phase changes of p-wave characteristics after circumferential pulmonary vein isolation

Background Circumferential pulmonary vein isolation （CpVI）, as the basal ablation strategy for treating atrial fibrillation （AF）, not only isolates the connection between the left atrium （LA） and the pulmonary veins （pVs）, but also induces extensive atrial endocardia damage. This could have an effect on the sinus pulse conduction in the LA and subsequently result in changes of p-wave characteristics of surface electrocardiogram （ECG）. Methods Fifty consecutive patients underwent CpVI for symptomatic drug-refractory paroxysmal AF. The 12-lead ECGs were recorded one day before CpVI and seven days after CpVI at sinus rhythm by a standard resting ECG device. Measured characteristics of the p-wave consisted of p-wave duration （pWD）, p-wave amplitude （pWA）, p-wave polarity （pWp）, p-wave notch, p-wave dispersion and p-wave index. Results After CpVI, a prevalent decrease of pWD, pWA, and p-wave dispersion was observed; a transition of p-wave polarity was observed in the leads of III, aVL and aVF. The rate of p-wave notch decreased significantly in all leads, especially in the leads of II, III, aVF and V3. patients with sinus rhythm had a shorter p-wave dispersion and p-wave index and had a lower rate of p-wave notch compared with the patients with recurrent atrial tachyarrhythmia. Conclusion Observations from using the surface ECG showed that CpVI has instant effects on the electrical conduction in the LA, and several changes of p-wave characteristics associated with development olAF are improved by CpVI.
