First-principles study of lattice dynamics and thermodynamics of osmium under pressure

We have performed the first-principles linear response calculations of the lattice dynamics, thermal equation of state and thermodynamical properties of hep Os metal by using the plane-wave pseudopotential method. The thermodynamical properties are deduced from the calculated Helmholtz free energy by taking into account the electronic contribution and lattice vibrational contribution. The phonon frequencies at Gamma point are consistent with ex- perimental values and the dispersion curves at various pressures have been determined. The calculated volume, bulk modulus and their pressure derivatives as a function of temperature are in excellent agreement with the experimental results. The calculated specific heat indicates that the electronic contribution is important not only at very low tem- peratures but also at high temperatures due to the electronic thermal excitation. The calculated Debye temperature at a very low temperature is in good agreement with experimental values and drops to a constant until 100 K.

High-pressure Raman scattering from hexagonal close-packed(HCP) metals Os and Re have been extended up to 200 GPa, and the pressure-dependent shear modulus C_(44)has been deduced from the Raman-active mode E_(28), which is generated from the adjacent vibration of atoms in hexagonal planes, providing the valuable information about the elastic properties for HCP metals under high pressure. Combined with the available data of HCP metals from previous works,a further study indicates that the C_(44)/C_(44)ratio would be close to a constant value, 0.01, with increasing atomic number of metals. The results obtained from high-pressure Raman scattering will allow us to probe the elastic anisotropy of the HCP metals at very high pressure.

Treatment of RuCl2(PPh3)3 with 6-dimethylaminopentafulvene in THF in the presence of water produced(η5-C5H4CHO) RuCl(PPh3)2, which was reduced by NaBH4 to give the Ru–H···HO dihydrogen bonded complex(η5-C5H4CH2OH) RuH(PPh3)2. The dihydrogen bonded complex(η5-C5H4CH2OH)RuH(PPh3)2 could also be synthesized by the reduction of complex(η5-C5H4CHO)RuH(PPh3)2, which was obtained by the reaction of RuHCl(PPh3)3 with 6-dimethylaminopentafulvene in the presence of water. The analogous dihydrogen bonded osmium complex(η5-C5H4CH2OH)OsH(PPh3)2 was similarly prepared. Single crystal structures and DFT calculations support the presence of intra-molecular H···H interaction, with separations of around 1.9 to 2.0 .

A novel [44-2] cycloaddition reaction between osmium alkenylcarbyne complex [OsHC12{-CC（PPh3）-- CHPh}（PPh3）2]＋BF4 （1） and nitriles （acetonitrile and benzonitrile） provided metallapyridiniums [OsC12{= CHC（PPh3）=CPhCR=NH}（PPh3）2]＋ BF4 （R-CH3 （2）, Ph （3）） and OsC13 {=CHC（PPh3）=CPhCPh=NH}- （PPh3）（4）. A possible mechanism was proposed. Treatment of 2 with n-BuLi and NEt3 afforded osmapyridines OsClz{=CHC（PPh3）=CPhCCH3=N}（PPh3）2 （5） and [OsCl=CHC（PPh3）=CPhCCH3=N}（C6HsN）（PPh3）2]＇ BF4 （6）. The ligands of osmapyridiniums 2 and 4 were changed, thus providing a series of osmapyridiniums [OsCI（SCN）{=CHC（PPh3）=CPhC（CH3）=NH}（PPh3）2]＋Cl（7）, OsCI（SCN）2{=CHC（PPh3）=CPhC（CH3）= N H } （PPh3）（8）, Os（SCN）3 { -- CHC（PPh3） = CPhC（CH3） = NH } （PPh3）（9）, [OsCl { = CHC（PPh3） = CPhC（CH3） = NH}（CH3CN）（PPh3）2]＋（ BF4 ）2 （lO）, [OsCl{=CHC（PPh3）=CPhC（CH3）--NH}-（q2-l,10-phenanthroline）（PPh3）]＋（ BF4 ）el （11）, [OsCl{=CHC（PPh3）=CPhC（eH3）=NH}（r/2-8-hydroxyquinoline）（PPh3）]＋ BF4 （12）, and [Os{ =CHC（PPh3）=CPhCPh=NH}（CH3CN）3（PPh3）]＋（ BF/）3 （13）. Most of these products were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction.

A highly sensitive indirect spectrophotometric red-ox method for the determination of osmium is reported. The method is based on the oxidation of iodide by osmium （Ⅵ） and the spectrophotometric detection of the liberated iodine in the form of complex anion and ion associate with 2-（4-diethylaminostyryl）-1,3,3-trimethyl-6-nitro-3H-indolium chloride reagent. The appropriate reaction conditions have been established. The molar absorptivity is （ 1.6-5.6） × 10^4 L mol^-1 cm^-1. Beer＇s law holds for the concentration range of 0.5-11.4 μg mL^-1 of Os（Ⅵ）.

Oxo(tert-butylimido) or bis(tert-butylimido)osmium(VI) porphyrins Os(Por)(O)(NBut) and Os(Por)(NBut)2, [Por=meso-tetrakis(p-tolyl)porphyrinato (TTP) and meso-tetrakis(4-chlorophe-nyl)porphyrinato (4-Cl-TPP)] were synthesized by air oxidation of bis(tert-butylamme)osmium(II) porphyrins [Os(Por)(H2NBut)2 (Por=TPP, 4-Cl-TPP], depending on whether tert-butylamine is present. The bis(tert-butylamine)ruthenium(II) porphyrins [Ru(Por)(H2NBut)2, Por=TTP, 4-Cl-TPP] can undergo bromine oxidation to give oxo(tert-butylimido)ruthenium(VI) complexes in quantitative yields. All these new complexes were characterized by 1H NMR, UV-Visible and IR spectroscopy. The X-ray crystal structures of Os(TTP)(O)(NBut).EtOH and Os(4-Cl-TPP)(NBut)2 have been determined. Crystal data: for Os(TTP)(O)(NBut).EtOH: monoclinic, space group P21/c, a=1.3546(6) nm, b=2.3180(3) nm, c=1.6817(3) nm, B=90.84(2), V=527.97(1) nm3, Z=4. The Os=O and Os=NBut distances in Os(TTP)(O)(NBut).EtOH are 0.1772(7) nm and 0.1759(9) nm, respectively. The average Os=NBut distance of Os(4-Cl-TPP)(NBut)2 is 0.1775 nm.
