A new method of robust damper design is presented for elastic-plastic multi-degree-of-freedom(MDOF)building structures under multi-level ground motions(GMs).This method realizes a design that is effective for various levels of *** robustness of a design is measured by an incremental dynamic analysis(IDA)curve and an ideal drift response curve(IDRC).The IDRC is a plot of the optimized maximum deformation under a constraint on the total damper quantity *** design level of the *** total damper quantity corresponds to the total cost of the added ***,a problem of generation of IDRCs is ***,its solution algorithm,which consists of the sensitivity-based algorithm(SBA)and a local search method,is *** the application of the SBA,the passive added dampers are removed sequentially under the specified-level *** the other hand,the proposed local search method can search the optimal solutions for a constant total damper quantity under GMs’increased *** this way,combining these two algorithms enables the comprehensive search of the optimal solutions for various conditions of the status of the GMs and the total damper *** influence of selecting the type of added dampers(oil,hysteretic,and so on)and the selection of the input GMs on the IDRCs are ***,a robust optimal design problem is formulated,and a simple local search-based algorithm is proposed.A simple index using the IDRC and the IDA curve of the model is used as the objective *** is demonstrated that the proposed algorithm works well in spite of its simplicity.

A SIMPLE RELOCATION STRATEGY FOR OPTIMAL PLACEMENT OF DAMPER...

This paper proposes a simple and effective approach for allocating dampers in multi-story shear *** approach consists of the following ***,dampers are placed uniformly at each story of some selected bays of the shear ***,the time-history seismic analysis is ***,relocate dampers by moving dampers located at the stories with lower inter-story drift ratios to the stories with higher inter-story drift ratios. Repeat the former process until the prescribed stop criterion is *** linear and nonlinear viscous dampers(with two exponents,including 0.3 and 0.5) are used in this *** results are compared with those obtained using the simplified sequential search algorithm (SSSA).It is found that the proposed approach requires much fewer number of time-history analysis than that using the SSSA while their accuracy is *** is also found that the efficiency of the proposed approach for allocating non-linear viscous dampers is comparable to or better than for allocating linear viscous dampers.
