Astronomical function and date of the Taosi observatory

The Taosi site in Xiangfen County,Shanxi Province,may be the capital of the King Yao. Archeologists recently discovered a large semi-circular stamped-earth platform, II FJT1,which has a clear and definite pounded-earth central core together with a curved wall perforated by twelve gaps. The platform is said to be an ancient observatory used to determine the seasons by watching the sunrise. Each feature of II FJT1 was precisely measured and the data are reproduced in this paper. An astronomical analysis of slots E2 and E12 was carried out using the azimuths of the slots' centerlines and the vertical angle of the mountain ridge opposite, above which the sun rises. The results show that at present the sun is close to the two slots but does not exactly enter them at summer and winter solstice sunrise. Using 14C analysis archeologists dated the site to about 2100 BC. Because of the secular change in the obliquity of the ecliptic,at that date on the summer solstice the half-risen sun would have appeared inside slot E12 just to the right of the centerline,and on the winter solstice the sun would have been exactly on the centerline of slot E2. This result provides compelling proof that II FJT1 is an ancient observatory.

Tropical cyclone track prediction using a large-area WRF model at the Hong Kong observatory

Tropical cyclone(TC)track predictions of the 10-km resolution WRF(provisionally named"AAMC-WRF")of the Hong Kong observatory(HKO),spanning(20°S-60°N,45°E-160°E)is studied for a 1-year period from April 2018 to Mar 2019.Real-time predictions,up to 4 times a day and T+48 h ahead,are verified against operational analysis positions of HKO for storms over the South China Sea(SCS)and Western North Pacific(WNP);and of the New Delhi Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre(RSMC)for storms over the North Indian Ocean basin(NIO;including the Bay of Bengal).Out of 21 named TCs over SCS and WNP,mean positional errors of the AAMC-WRF are 33 km(T+0),63 km(T+24),and 107 km(T+48)based on 209,178 and 142 forecasts.The AAMC-WRF outperformed Meso-NHM,also run in real-time at HKO,with mean error reduction up to 34 km or 24%.Mean positional errors for 13 NIO storms are 38 km(T+0),69 km(T+24)and 107 km(T+48)based on 183,131 and 85 forecasts.This is the first study in which TC predictions of a regional model are simultaneously examined over the SCS,WNP and NIO basins through real-time experiments.

The Necessity of Using Cloud Computing in Monitoring Metropolitan Performance<br/>-Case Study: Tehran Metropolitan Urban observatory

Due to the metropolitan area of immense diversity and breadth of their construction activities, the performance of activities at districts level, cannot be precisely evaluated. Therefore, generally, it monitors only the indices which are defined for those functions. Furthermore, district-based development policy, and decentralization of governance, necessitate more local autonomy, which requires closer monitors of districts for being sure of its movements in the frame of urban developing plans. The advancement of technology has created the expectation that we can monitor all details of the metropolitan administrative processes and involve them in decision support systems for urban management. In this study, a web based SDSS prototype has been implemented to monitor the Tehran development plans progress at districts level. This interactive system presents a map of Tehran which indicates the realization of each component of the city master plan in different parts of town. The design of system lets all districts produce and support their own reporting maps, and it presents them in their dedicated place of city map by snapping all districts reports, when a city report arises. Also it elaborates the problem of implementing and proposes “cloud computing facilities” as a solution.

Covering about three quarters of the surface area of the earth,the ocean is a critical source of sustenance,medicine,and commerce.However,such vast expanse in both surface area and depth,presents myriad observing challenges for researchers,such as corrosion,attenuation of electromagnetic waves,and high pressure.Ocean observation technologies are progressing from the conventional single node,static and short-term modalities to multiple nodes,dynamic and long-term modalities,to increase the density of both temporal and spatial samplings.Although people’s knowledge of the oceans has been still quite limited,the contributions of many nations cooperating to develop the Global Ocean Observing System(GOOS)have remarkably promoted the development of ocean observing technologies.This paper reviews the typical observing technologies deployed from the sea surface to the seafloor,and discusses the future trend of the ocean observation systems with the docking technology and sustained ocean energy.

Power system design for constant current subsea observatories

Constant current power transmission is considered a good choice for subsea observatories due to its high resistance to shunt faults. A constant current subsea observatory is planned to be constructed in the East China Sea. We discuss a constant current subsea observatory system used for scientific experiments. The power system and its heat dissipation system are carefully designed. The power conversion method is challenging due to the use of constant current power, which is considerably different from traditional power systems. Thus, we adopt power compensation circuits in the conversion system to obtain a constant 48-V output for science users. A power management system that performs overvoltage protection and real-time monitoring and control of junction box is discussed. An innovative heat dissipation structure of a junction box is designed in consideration of a sealed working environment to extend the useful life of the junction box. Simulations and experiments reveal that the system has high efficiency and stability, especially in long-term applications.

PROGRESS IN HONG KONG'S TROPICAL CYCLONE FORECASTING AND WARNING SERVICES IN RECENT DECADES

With modern infrastructures and effective warning systems,casualties,damages and losses due to tropicalcyclones(TCs)have been significantly reduced over the years in Hong Kong.Nevertheless,densely populated coastal cities like Hong Kong will need to continuously enhance its resilience to high winds,heavy rain and storm surges brought by TCs,especially with the growing concern of the challenges induced by climate change and sea level rise.By embracing the advance of remote sensing,communication and numerical modelling technology,the Hong Kong observatory(HKO)continues to improve its TC monitoring and forecasting techniques as well as forecasting and warning services to meet the needs of the society.This paper concisely reviews the major development and achievement of TC-related operation and services of HKO in recent decades,in aspects such as Numerical Weather Prediction(NWP)models,nowcasting techniques,warning communication and public education.Future thrusts on TC forecasting and warning services of HKO will also be discussed.

Stellar spectral classification and feature evaluation based on a random forest

With the availability of multi-object spectrometers and the design and operation of some large scale sky surveys, the issue of how to deal with enormous quantities of spectral data efficiently and accurately is becoming more and more important. This work investigates the classification problem of stellar spectra under the assumption that there is no perfect absolute flux calibration, for example, when considering spectra from the Guo Shou Jing Telescope(the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope, LAMOST). The proposed scheme consists of the following two procedures: Firstly, a spectrum is normalized based on a 17 th order polynomial fitting;secondly, a random forest(RF) is utilized to classify the stellar spectra. Experiments on four stellar spectral libraries show that the RF has good classification performance. This work also studied the spectral feature evaluation problem based on RF. The evaluation is helpful in understanding the results of the proposed stellar classification scheme and exploring its potential improvements in the future.
