The aim o. this study was to.characterize the po.ypheno.ic co.po.itio. by determinatio. o. chemical fingerprints o. Methano.ic extracts o. o.imum canum Sims, o.imum basilicum L. and o.imum gratissimum L. fro. Demo.ratic Republic o. Co.go.and to.co.pare their antisickling activity o. that o. ro.marinic acid, the majo. co.po.nd to.tho.e o. methano.ic extracts. Phyto.hemical analysis perfo.med by TLC and HPLC analysis, sho.ed that ro.marinic acid is the mo.t abundant pheno.ic acid in these o.imum species acco.ding to.the fo.lo.ing o.der o. basilicum L., o. gratissimum L. and o. canum Sims. Methano.ic extracts o. these three species and pure ro.marinic acid sho.ed significant antisickling activities with minimal co.centratio. o. no.malizatio. values o. 0.18 ± 0.03, 0.23 ± 0.04, 0.26 ± 0.04 and 0.31 ± 0.05 mg/mL fo. ro.marinic acid, o. basilicum L., o. gratissimum L. and o. canum Sims methano.ic extracts respectively. The antisickling activity o.der is the same as that o. the ro.marinic acid co.tent, indicating that this po.ypheno.ic acid wo.ld be amo.g the main active mo.ecules in these extracts.
