Flowering and senescence are two important and closely related plant development events and regulated by a complicated network. In this study, we present findings that nucleoporin 98（Nup98） may participate in regulation of both senescence and flowering in Arabidopsis thaliana. We found that Nup98a and Nup98b redundantly function in the early steps of starch degradation, the nup98a nup98b double mutant accumulates more starch than wild type and has a severe early senescence phenotype compared to wild type. The results suggest a role for Nup98 in starch degradation conferring to growth regulation in Arabidopsis. On the other hand, the nup98a nup98b double mutant also displays early flowering. Significantly, Nup98a and Nup98b gate flowering in a CONSTANS（CO）-independent mode and the nup98a nup98b co triple mutant remains early flowering similar to the nup98a nup98b double mutant. But the ft mutant can rescue the early flowering phenotype and the nup98a nup98b ft triple mutant flower late. Therefore, Nup98a and Nup98b bypass the CO checkpoint in photoperiodic signaling and integrated signals from other flowering pathways to directly target FLOWERING LOCUS T（FT） for flowering control. What is more, the ft mutant cannot rescue early senescence phenotype of the nup98a nup98b mutant because the nup98a nup98b ft triple mutant still has senescence characters as the nup98a nup98b double mutant does. Our results provide a line of evidence for uncoupling the mechanism of flowering and senescence at Nup98a and Nup98b genes in Arabidopsis, which are classically recognized as two coupled developmental events.
