TGF-β 1–3 are unique multi-functional growth factors that are only expressed in mammals, and mainly secreted and stored as a latent complex in the extracellular matrix(ECM). The biological functions of TGF-β in adults can only be delivered after ligand activation, mostly in response to environmental perturbations. Although involved in multiple biological and pathological processes of the human body, the exact roles of TGF-β in maintaining stem cells and tissue homeostasis have not been well-documented until recent advances, which delineate their functions in a given context. Our recent findings, along with data reported by others, have clearly shown that temporal and spatial activation of TGF-β is involved in the recruitment of stem/progenitor cell participation in tissue regeneration/remodeling process, whereas sustained abnormalities in TGF-β ligand activation, regardless of genetic or environmental origin, will inevitably disrupt the normal physiology and lead to pathobiology of major diseases. Modulation of TGF-β signaling with different approaches has proven effective pre-clinically in the treatment of multiple pathologies such as sclerosis/fibrosis, tumor metastasis, osteoarthritis, and immune disorders. Thus, further elucidation of the mechanisms by which TGF-β is activated in different tissues/organs and how targeted cells respond in a context-dependent way can likely be translated with clinical benefits in the management of a broad range of diseases with the involvement of TGF-β.

Under conditions of aluminum(Al) toxicity,which severely inhibits root growth in acidic soils, plants rapidly alter their gene expression to optimize physiological fitness for survival. Abscisic acid(ABA) has been suggested as a mediator between Al stress and gene expression, but the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here,we investigated ABA-mediated Al-stress responses, using integrated physiological and molecular biology approaches.We demonstrate that Al stress caused ABA accumulation in the root apex of rice bean(Vigna umbellata [Thunb.] Ohwi &Ohashi), which positively regulated Al tolerance. However,this was not associated with known Al-tolerance mechanisms. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that nearly one-third of the responsive genes were shared between the Al-stress and ABA treatments. We further identified a transcription factor, ABI5, as being positively involved in Al tolerance. Arabidopsis abi5 mutants displayed increased sensitivity to Al, which was not related to the regulation of AtALMT1 and AtMATE expression. Functional categorization of ABI5-mediated genes revealed the importance of cell wall modification and osmoregulation in Al tolerance, a finding supported by osmotic stress treatment on Al tolerance. Our results suggest that ABA signal transduction pathways provide an additional layer of regulatory control over Al tolerance in plants.

Nowadays,utilities aim to find methods for improving the reliability of distribution systems and satisfying the customers by providing the continuity of power supply.Different methodologies exist for utilities to improve the reliability of network.In this paper,demand response(DR)programs and smart charging/discharging of plug-in electric vehicles(PEVs)are investigated for improving the reliability of radial distribution systems adopting particle swarm optimization(PSO)algorithm.Such analysis is accomplished due to the positive effects of both DR and PEVs for dealing with emerging challenges of the world such as fossil fuel reserves reduction,urban air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.Additionally,the prioritization of DR and PEVs is presented for improving the reliability and analyzing the characteristics of distribution networks.The reliability analysis is performed in terms of loss of load expectation(LOLE)and expected energy not served(EENS)indexes,where the characteristics contain load profile,load peak,voltage profile and energy loss.Numerical simulations are accomplished to assess the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed scheme.

Background:Autoimmune pancreatitis(AIP)is a well-recognized fibroinflammatory disease of the pancreas.Despite the significant number of studies published on AIP type 1 and 2,no studies have been focused on AIP type not otherwise specified(NOS)and therefore very little is known about clinical features and long-term outcomes of these patients.The aim of this study was to investigate clinical and radiological features of AIP type NOS-patients.Methods:Patients classified as AIP type NOS at clinical onset included in our database prospectively maintained since 1995 were evaluated.Epidemiological,clinical data were collected and analyzed.Results:Forty-six patients were included in the study.The clinical onset was mainly characterized by weight loss,jaundice and acute pancreatitis.Eight patients(17.4%)were reclassified as AIP type 2 during follow-up because of the development of ulcerative colitis.Seven patients(15.2%)experienced relapse after steroid treatment but only one(2.2%)needed immunosuppressive drugs because of recurrent relapses.Conclusions:AIP type NOS shares clinical features similar to AIP type 2 and a relevant proportion of patients was reclassified as AIP type 2 during follow-up because of the development of ulcerative colitis.The risk of relapse is low but not irrelevant.

Numerical study of point spread function of a fast neutron radiography system based on scintillating-fiber array

For a scintillating-fiber array fast-neutron radiography system,a point-spread-function computing model was introduced,and the simulation code was developed. The results of calculation show that fast-neutron radiographs vary with the size of fast neutron sources,the size of fiber cross-section and the imaging geometry. The results suggest that the following qualifications are helpful for a good point spread function: The cross-section of scintillating fibers not greater than 200 μm×200 μm,the size of neutron source as small as a few millimeters,the distance between the source and the scintillating fiber array greater than 1 m,and inspected samples placed as close as possible to the array. The results give suggestions not only to experiment considerations but also to the estimation of spatial resolution for a specific system.

This paper presents a security constrained unit commitment(SCUC)suitable for power systems with a large share of wind energy.The deterministic spinning reserve requirement is supplemented by an adjustable fraction of the expected shortfall from the supply of wind electric generators(WEGs),computed using the stochastic feature of wind and loosely represented in the security constraint with scenarios.The optimization tool commits and dispatches generating units while simultaneously determining the geographical procurement of the required spinning reserve as well as load-following ramping reserve,by mixed integer quadratic programming(MIQP).Case studies are used to investigate various effects of grid integration on reducing the overall operation costs associated with more wind power in the system.

Gold disk targets were irradiated using focusing and beam smoothing methods on Xingguang (XG-Ⅱ) laser facilities with 350 nm wavelength,0.6 ns pulse width and 20-80 Joules energies. Laser absorption,light scattering and X-ray conversion were experimentally investigated. The experimental results showed that laser ab-sorption and scattered light were about 90% and 10%,respectively,under focusing irradiation,but the laser absorption increased 5%-10% and the scattered light about 1% under the condition of beam smoothing. Compared with the case of fo-cusing irradiation,the laser absorption was effectively improved and the scattered light remarkably dropped under uniform irradiation; then due to the decrease in laser intensity,X-ray conversion increased. This is highly advantageous to the in-ertial confinement fusion. However,X-ray conversion mechanism basically did not change and X-ray conversion efficiency under beam smoothing and focusing irra-diation was basically the same.

AIM To determine morbidity and mortality in this specific patient group and also to assess for any independent associations between Do not Resuscitate(DNR) status and increased post-operative morbidity and mortality.METHODS We conducted a propensity score matched retrospective analysis using de-identified data from the American College of Surgeons' National Surgical Quality Improvement Project(ACS NSQIP) for all patients undergoing hip fracture surgery over a 7 year period in hospitals across the United States enrolled in ACS NSQIP with and without Do not Resuscitate Status. We measured patient demographics including DNR status, co-morbidities, frailty and functional baseline, surgical and anaestheticprocedure data, post-operative morbidity/complications, length of stay, discharge destination and mortality.RESULTS Of 9218 patients meeting the inclusion criteria, 13.6% had a DNR status, 86.4% did not. Mortality was higher in the DNR status compared to the non-DNR group, at 15.3% vs 8.1% and propensity score matched multivariable analysis demonstrated that DNR status was independently associated with mortality(OR = 2.04, 95%CI: 1.46-2.86, P not otherwise associated with increased morbidity. DNR status appears to increase 30-d mortality via ceilings of care in keeping with a DNR status, including withholding reintubation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
