Response of ocean climate to different heat-flux perturbations over the north atlantic in FAFMIP

The diversity of surface-flux perturbations,especially for heat-flux perturbations,notably leads to uncertainties surrounding the responses of ocean climate under global warming scenarios projected by climate/Earth system ***,when imposing heat-flux perturbations on the models,strong feedback persists between the atmosphere and the ocean,resulting in nearly doubled heat-flux perturbation over the north atlantic(NA).Herein,quantitative evaluation of the influences of magnitude change of heat-flux perturbations over the NA on the changes in the atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation(AMOC),ocean heat uptake(OHU)and dynamic sea level(DSL)has been conducted by analysis of eight coupled model responses to the heat-flux perturbation experiments in the Flux-Anomaly-Forced Model Inter-comparison *** has been demonstrated that the magnitude of the AMOC change is extremely sensitive to the magnitude change of imposed NA heat-flux perturbation,and the weakening amplitude of the AMOC is nearly halved as the imposed heat-flux perturbation F is halved over the *** most remarkable responses of both DSL and OHU to the magnitude changes of NA heat-flux perturbation have been primarily found in the atlantic and Arctic basins,especially for the NA *** the added ocean heat uptake(OHUa)and redistributed ocean heat uptake(OHUr)play key roles in OHU changes among the various NA heat-flux perturbation *** magnitude change of NA-mean OHUa is almost linearly related to the imposed NA heat-flux perturbation,while the magnitude change of NA-mean OHUr,which is primarily caused by AMOC change and redistributed heat flux,is not proportional to the imposed NA heat-flux *** is a nearly linear relationship between the magnitude of AMOC change and the OHUr in tropical regions,including the regions in the low-latitude South atlantic,the tropical Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean.

Biogenic opal and calcium carbonate contents in the Quaternary fine-grained sediments in the deep sea coral mound area (Hole U1317E and Hole U1318B drilled by IODP Expedition 307) in Porcupine Seabight, southwest off Ireland, were measured to estimate the primary productivity (Pp) of the surface seawater in NE atlantic. The results from the two holes commonly show relatively high Pp values of 10-30 g cm-2 ky-1, having stratigraphic cyclicity reversely correlated with the δ13C profile. The high Pp could be attributed to the oceanic setting controlled by the Eastern north atlantic (Central) Water and Shelf Edge Current, which have been strongly influenced by the obliquity forcing of the Milankovitch cycle. A positive covariance was observed between high Pp and the mound development in U1317E, implying that the organic matter was the principal food source for the mound coral community. It is proposed that the pelagic marl matrix of the mound sediments provides information of the surface water productivity that is useful for reconstructing the paleoceanography and the paleoclimate in the NW atlantic.

Effects of extratropical solar penetration on the north atlantic Ocean circulation and climate are investigated using a coupled ocean-atmosphere *** this model,solar penetration generates basinwide cooling and warming in summer and winter,*** with SST changes,annual mean surface wind stress is intensified in both the subtropical and subpolar north atlantic,which leads to acceleration of both subtropical and subpolar *** to warming in the subtropics and significant saltiness in the subpolar region,potential density decreases(increases) in the subtropical(subpolar)north *** north-south meridional density gradient is thereby enlarged,accelerating the atlantic meridional overturning circulation(AMOC).In addition,solar penetration reduces stratification in the upper ocean and favors stronger vertical convection,which also contributes to acceleration of the AMOC.

Abrupt Climate Changes of Holocene

This paper is a review of studies of abrupt climate changes(ACCs) during the Holocene published during the past ten *** atlantic cold events are indicators of *** indicated by north atlantic ice-rafted debris(IRD),there were nine confirmed cold events during the Holocene,occurring at 11.1 kyr,10.3 kyr,9.4 kyr,8.1 kyr,5.9 kyr,4.2 kyr,2.8 kyr,1.4 kyr,and 0.4 kyr respectively according to most representative results from Bond et al.(1997).However,the identification of chronology has been made with some *** climatic proxy data have shown that,during the cold events,substantial climate abnormalities have occurred widely across the globe,particularly in the areas surrounding the north *** abnormalities were in the form of high-latitude cold in the both hemispheres,expansion of the Westerlies to low latitudes,drought in the monsoon regions,recession of summer monsoons,and intensification of the winter *** have indicated that the four ACCs occurring in the early Holocene may be related to freshwater pulses from ice melting in the northern part of the north atlantic,and the other five ACCs that occurred during the middle and late Holocene may be related to the decreased solar activity.

In the southwestern north atlantic Ocean, the area between the 80F isotherm and the equator, and between 30W longitude and the western most land boundary, is compiled for each month from a world atlas of sea surface temperatures. Between February and March, the area starts to increase from 100 units until a maximum of over 1000 units is reached in August, after which the area decreases. One unit equals one latitude/longitude square. While increasing by swelling to the north, the temperature inside the area essentially does not increase, in spite of the self-evident fact that absorption of solar heat increases the whole time in the top 100 m of the water column. The Scandinavia Ozone Loss and Surface Heating

Analysis on NASA Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) ozone shows a clear ozone loss, ?50 DU (15% of the total ozone), over Scandinavia. Correlation analysis between the ozone loss and the east-to-west sea surface temperature (SST) contrast in the north atlantic shows correlation coefficients ?0.96 for seasonal variation and ?0.70 for monthly mean (168 months) in 1979–1992. Correlation coefficients between the ozone loss and the surface-to-atmosphere heat fluxes are higher than ?0.87. There-fore the authors suggest that the warm atlantic current carries energy northward to Scandina via and causes ozone loss there via the surface-to-atmosphere heating processes.
