Using a fluorescence microscope and EPMA, abundant microbe "bodies" and clear mi-crobic fluorescent microstructure are determined in the ferromanganese nodules recently collected from the East Pacific deep sea floor. The microbic fluorescent structure shows a close relation to the formation of the ferromanganese nodules. According to their morphological features, the microbes are classified into two types: one is named clumpy microbe, which takes a bar-shaped manganese mineral as a pillar and grows like fasciculate coral, resulting in irregular cauliflorate nodules with rough surfaces; the other is called filamentous microbe, which grows in very thin arcuate and/or concentric circular laminae composed of a microbe layer and a metal (manganese and iron)-rich layer, leading to potato-shaped nodules with relatively smooth surfaces. It also can be seen that the two types of microbes are intergrown together, resulting in nodules complicated in compositions and shapes.

The pelagic manganese nodules from the East Pacific Ocean have been studied using polarizing and electron microscope since 1994. Based on the surface morphology and the type of stromatolites in the coatings, these manganese nodules can be divided into smooth and knobbly ones. The coatings of smooth nodules are composed of Minima. The coatings of knobbly ones consist of Admirabilis. The authors have reported the first discovery of the beaded ultra-microfossils in the manganese nodules, but did not classify

The geochemical characteristics of ferromanganese nodules have been described in detail by the information study of major elements, trace elements, rare earth elements and infrared spectrophotometer, X-ray diffraction, electronic probing, electronic microscope analysis in 57 ferromanganese nodules of different types from the South China Sea and the Northern Central Pacific Basin. The result shows that (ⅰ) the different types of ferromanganese nodules have different geochemical characteristics; (ⅱ) there is a close relationship between Mn/Fe in ferromanganese nodules and their element content, mineral composition, nodule abundance, tenor (Cu+Co+Ni)%, growth Speed and sedimentary environment. It has suggested that Mn/Fe in nodules can be an indicator of classifying ferromanganese nodule types.

The present analysis aims to investigate the prevalence of thyroid nodules in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) *** searched PubMed,EMBASE,and Web of Science from inception to the March 1,*** studies were selected to estimate the prevalence of thyroid nodules in T2DM subjects and to compare the prevalence of thyroid nodules in different glucose tolerance *** random effects model was used,and the outcome was presented as a pooled prevalence proportion with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) or a summary odds ratio (OR) with 95% *** the end,9 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the *** pooled prevalence of thyroid nodules was 60%(95% CI:0.52,0.68) for T2DM 2 diabetes patients,50%(95% CI:0.4& 0.51) for pre-diabetes,and 43%(95% CI:0.34,0.52) for normal glucose tolerance *** with patients without diabetes,diabetes subjects are more likely to develop thyroid nodules,adjusted OR for thyroid nodule was 1.78 (95% CI:1.25,2.55).Insulin resistance might be involved in thyroid nodule development.

BACKGROUND The common computed tomography findings of pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis (PLCH) are multiple cysts and micronodules predominantly in middle to upper lung ***-cystic nodules and large nodules are atypical findings of *** SUMMARY The patient was a 48-year-old Japanese man with a smoking history (20 cigarettes/d,28 years) and no *** nodules existed in all lung lobes,predominantly in the right lower *** nodules seemed to be distributed randomly,and others were adjacent to *** nodules were solid;some small ones were *** largest nodule was 22 mm in *** metastatic lung tumors were suspected,thoracoscopic lung biopsy led to the diagnosis of *** 6 months after he quit smoking,all nodules had almost *** investigated the characteristics of nodules at diagnosis in *** 349 nodules in total,116 were in upper and 199 were in lower ***-six (27.5%) were cystic;the remaining 253 (72.5%) were *** prevalence of cystic nodules was higher in upper lobes than in lower lobes (right upper 37.5% vs lower 18.2%,P = 0.0068;left upper 48.1% vs lower 24.4%,P = 0.0078).The average size (dia.) of cystic nodules was smaller than that of noncystic nodules (5.03 mm vs 7.40 mm,respectively,P nodules including large nodules (over 20 mm) are atypical,PLCH should be included in differential *** presence of small cystic nodules predominantly in upper lobes and asymptomatic situation are also important for differential diagnoses to distinguish from metastatic cancers.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Accurate early diagnosis is critical in increasing the 5-year survival rate of lung cancer, so the efficient and accurate detection of lung nodules,the potential precursors to lung cancer, is paramount. In this paper, a computer-aided lung nodule detection system using 3D deep convolutional neural networks(CNNs) is developed. The first multi-scale 11-layer 3D fully convolutional neural network(FCN) is used for screening all lung nodule candidates. Considering relative small sizes of lung nodules and limited memory, the input of the FCN consists of 3D image patches rather than of whole images. The candidates are further classified in the second CNN to get the final result. The proposed method achieves high performance in the LUNA16 challenge and demonstrates the effectiveness of using 3D deep CNNs for lung nodule detection.

Based on the study of geochemical characteristics of the different Mn/Fe ferromanganese nodules, the formative mechanism of different geochemical type ferromanganese nodules are discussed in detail by analysing the relationship between different Mn/Fe nodules and their sediments (rock), pore water, overlying water, biological (bacteria) information from the rare earth element geochemistry, sedimentary geochemistry and biogeochemistry. The result shows that the formation mechanism of different Mn/Fe nodules is obviously different, and according to the formative mechanism, the ferromanganese nodules of the South China Sea and the Northern Central Pacific can be classified principally into three geochemical types: volcanic sedimentary mechanism (Mn/Fe≤1.50), oxidation diagenetic mechanism (Mn/Fe>1.50≤2.50) and suboxic organic diagenetic mechanism (Mn/Fe>2.50).

Fine-needle aspiration(FNA) cytology is an important diagnostic tool in patients with thyroid *** systems have been proposed for the cyropathologic diagnosis of the thyroid *** cases with indeterminate cytological findings still remain a matter of *** this review we analyze all literature regarding Thyroid Cytopathology Reporting systems trying to identify the most suitable methodology to use in clinical practice for the preoperative diagnosis of thyroid nodules.A review of the English literature was conducted,and data were analyzed and summarized and integrated from the authors' *** main purpose of thyroid FNA is to identify patients with higher risk for malignancy,and to prevent unnecessary surgeries for benign *** Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology is the most widely used system for the diagnosis of thyroid FNA *** system also contains guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of indeterminate or suspicious for malignancy *** conclusion,patients who require repeated FNAs for indeterminate diagnoses will be resolved by repeat FNA in a percentage of 72%-80%.
