Coordinated responses of leaf and nodule traits contribute to the accumulation of N in relay intercropped soybean

Maize(Zea mays L.)-soybean(Glycine max L.Merr.)relay intercropping provides a way to enhance land productivity.However,the late-planted soybean suffers from shading by the maize.After maize harvest,how the recovery growth influences the leaf and nodule traits remains unclear.A three-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of genotypes,i.e.,supernodulating(nts1007),Nandou 12(ND12),and Guixia 3(GX3),and crop configurations,i.e.,the interspecific row spacing of 45(I45),60(I60),75 cm(I75),and sole soybean(SS),on soybean recovery growth and N fixation.The results showed that intercropping reduced the soybean total leaf area(LA)by reducing both the leaf number(LN)and unit leaflet area(LUA),and it reduced the nodule dry weight(NW)by reducing both the nodule number(NN)and nodule diameter(ND)compared with the SS.The correlation and principal component analysis(PCA)indicated a co-variability of the leaf and nodule traits in response to the genotype and crop configuration interactions.During the recovery growth stages,the compensatory growth promoted soybean growth to reduce the gaps of leaf and nodule traits between intercropping and SS.The relative growth rates of ureide(RGR_U)and nitrogen(RGR_N)accumulation were higher in intercropping than in SS.Intercropping achieved more significant sucrose and starch contents compared with SS.ND12 and GX3 showed more robust compensatory growth than nts1007 in intercropping.Although the recovery growth of relay intercropping soybean improved biomass and nitrogen accumulation,ND12 gained a more significant partial land equivalent ratio(pLER)than GX3.The I60 treatment achieved more robust compensation effects on biomass and N accumulation than the other configurations.Meanwhile,I60 showed a higher nodule sucrose content and greater shoot ureide and N accumulation than SS.Finally,intercropping ND12 with maize using an interspecific row spacing of 60 cm was optimal for both yield advantage and N accumulation.

Treatment of 198 Cases of Thyroid nodules with Sanying Capsule Combined with Xiaoying Patch

[Objectives]To observe the clinical efficacy of Sanying capsule combined with Xiaoying Patch in treating thyroid nodule(TN).[Methods]Two groups were treated similarly,with 200 cases in the control group undergoing basic treatment for 12 weeks and 198 cases in the observation group receiving Sanying capsule combined with Xiaoying patches for the same duration.The clinical symptoms,number of nodules,diameter of the largest nodule,and maximum reduction of nodules were observed before and after treatment.A control analysis was performed,and the underlying mechanisms were explored.[Results]The primary symptoms of the observation group exhibited a more favorable improvement than those of the control group.Additionally,the number of nodules decreased,the diameter of the largest nodule decreased,and the maximum reduction of nodules decreased in both groups following treatment.However,the observation group demonstrated a more pronounced improvement than the control group(P<0.05).[Conclusions]The combination of Sanying capsule and Xiaoying patch has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment for TN,with a high degree of reliability in terms of safety.

An MAP kinase interacts with LHK1 and regulates nodule organogenesis in Lotus japonicus

Symbiosis receptor-like kinase(SymRK) is a key protein mediating the legume-Rhizobium symbiosis.Our previous work has identified an MAP kinase kinase,SIP2,as a SymRK-interacting protein to positively regulate nodule organogenesis in Lotus japonicus,suggesting that an MAPK cascade might be involved in Rhizobium-legume symbiosis.In this study,LjMPK6 was identified as a phosphorylation target of SIP2.Stable transgenic L.japonicus with RNAi silencing of LjMPK6 decreased the numbers of nodule primordia(NP) and nodule,while plants overexpressing LjMPK6 increased the numbers of nodule,infection threads(ITs),and NP,indicating that LjMPK6 plays a positive role in nodulation.LjMPK6 could interact with a cytokinin receptor,LHK1 both in vivo and in vitro.LjMPK6 was shown to compete with LHP1 to bind to the receiver domain(RD) of LHK1 and to downregulate the expression of two LjACS(1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid synthase) genes and ethylene levels during nodulation.This study demonstrated an important role of LjMPK6 in regulation of nodule organogenesis and ethylene production in L.japonicus.

No Home without Hormones: How Plant Hormones Control Legume nodule Organogenesis

The establishment of symbiotic nitrogen fixation requires the coordination of both nodule development and infection events.Despite the evolution of a variety of anatomical structures,nodule organs serve a common purpose in establishing a localized area that facilitates efficient nitrogen fixation.As in all plant developmental processes,the establishment of a new nodule organ is regulated by plant hormones.During nodule initiation,regulation of plant hormone signaling is one of the major targets of symbiotic signaling.We review the role of major developmental hormones in the initiation of the nodule organ and argue that the manipulation of plant hormones is a key requirement for engineering nitrogen fixation in non-legumes as the basis for improved food security and sustainability.

Sister Mary Joseph’s nodule in endometrial carcinoma: A case report

BACKGROUND Sister Mary Joseph’s nodule(SMJN)is rare and may occur independently or simultaneously with malignant tumors in the abdominal cavity.It has a poor prognosis.Endometrial carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor in the upper segment of the female reproductive tract;however,it rarely occurs with SMJN.We here report a case of endometrial carcinoma with SMJN.CASE SUMMARY A 75-year-old woman was diagnosed with endometrial cancer>2 years ago.After multiple cycles of chemotherapy,an obvious but painless umbilical mass was detected 2 wk before admission.The patient did not undergo surgical treatment but received chemotherapy,which was different from previous chemotherapy,for three consecutive cycles after discovery of umbilical metastases.Currently,the umbilical metastatic tumor has reduced,and the quality of life of the patient has significantly improved.CONCLUSION Once the umbilical mass is found,the possibility of SMJN should be considered.We should also take into account the poor prognosis of endometrial carcinoma complicated with umbilical metastasis,especially in patients with advanced tumors,and it is important to choose an appropriate treatment.

Centralized Lung nodule Management at A VeteransHospital Using A Multidisciplinary Lung noduleEValuation Team(LNET)

Introduction: Lung nodules are frequently identified on imaging studies and can represent early lung cancers. We instituted the Lung nodule Evaluation Team(LNET) to optimize management of these nodules by a lung specialist physician. All lung nodules identified by a radiologist prompted a direct consultation to this service. We report our initial experience with this process. Methods: This is a retrospective review of patients with lung nodules at a single institution from 2008 to 2015. Since October 2014, lung nodules >3 mm identified on computed tomography(CT) scanning of the chest generate an automatic consult to LNET from the radiology service. Demographic, nodule and follow up data was entered into a surveillance database and summarized.Results: There were 1,873 patients identified in the database. Of these, 900 patients were undergoing active surveillance. Consults increased from 5.5 to 93 per month after the start of the new consult program. Lung nodules were identified on 64% of chest CT scans. Prior to the direct radiology consult the average size of a nodule was 1.7 cm and 0.7 cm after. The overall time from initial nodule imaging to initiating a management plan by a thoracic specialist physician was 3.7 days. Conclusion: Assessment of lung nodules by a specialist physician is important to ensure appropriate long term management and optimize utilization of diagnostic interventions. A direct radiology consult to a specialized team of chest physicians decreased the time in initiating a management plan, identified smaller nodules and may lead to a more judicious use of health care resources in the management of lung nodules.

Automatic detection of breast nodule in the ultrasound images using CNN

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide.Ultrasound is widely used as a harmless test for early breast cancer screening.The ultrasound network(USNet) model is presented.It is an improved object detection model specifically for breast nodule detection on ultrasound *** improved the backbone network,optimized the generation of feature maps,and adjusted the loss function.Finally,USNet trained with real clinical data.The evaluation results show that the trained model has strong nodule detection ability.The mean average precision(mAP) value can reach 0.734 9.The nodule detection rate is 95.11%,and the in situ cancer detection rate is 79.65%.At the same time,detection speed can reach 27.3 frame per second(FPS),and the video data can be processed in real time.

A Finite Element Study of the Influence of Graphite nodule Characteristics on a Subsurface Crack in a Ductile Cast Iron Matrix under a Contact Load

This paper describes a study of the effects of graphite nodule characteristics on a subsurface crack in austempered ductile iron(ADI).A representative specimen of ADI,subjected to sliding contact load,is modeled using finite elements aiming to obtain the shear stress intensity factor(KII).The parameters varied were(i)the nodule diameter(two different values were considered),(ii)the distance between the nodule and the tip of the crack and(iii)the position of the load relative to the tip of the crack.The results of the numerical simulations show that the smaller diameter nodule has a larger influence on KII,suggesting a higher contact fatigue crack propagation rate in the material with the smaller nodule.These results are the opposite of those observed in experimental studies and would appear to indicate that other factors should be also considered to ensure realistic estimates of the contact fatigue strength of ADI.

Lung nodule Image Retrieval Based on Convolutional Neural Networks and Hashing

Lung medical image retrieval based on content similarity plays an important role in computer-aided diagnosis of lung cancer.In recent years,binary hashing has become a hot topic in this field due to its compressed storage and fast query speed.Traditional hashing methods often rely on highdimensional features based hand-crafted methods,which might not be optimally compatible with lung nodule images.Also,different hashing bits contribute to the image retrieval differently,and therefore treating the hashing bits equally affects the retrieval accuracy.Hence,an image retrieval method of lung nodule images is proposed with the basis on convolutional neural networks and hashing.First,apre-trained and fine-tuned convolutional neural network is employed to learn multilevel semantic features of the lung nodules.Principal components analysis is utilized to remove redundant information and preserve informative semantic features of the lung nodules.Second,the proposed method relies on nine sign labels of lung nodules for the training set,and the semantic feature is combined to construct hashing functions.Finally,returned lung nodule images can be easily ranked with the query-adaptive search method based on weighted Hamming distance.Extensive experiments and evaluations on the dataset demonstrate that the proposed method can significantly improve the expression ability of lung nodule images,which further validates the effectiveness of the proposed method.
