Effect of Nitrite on hydrolysis-acidification, biogas production and microbial community in semi-continuous two-phase anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge

Previous study found that the pre-treatment of sewage sludge with Nitrite improves the biogas production during the mono/two-phase anaerobic digestion (AD) using batch biochemical methane potential tests.In this study,the effects of Nitrite on hydrolysisacidification,biogas production,volatile solids destruction and microbial composition in semi-continuous two-phase AD of sewage sludge were investigated.The addition of Nitrite promotes sludge organic matter solubilization (+484%) and VFAs production (+98.9%),and causes an increase in the VS degradation rate during the AD process (+8.7%).The comparison of biogas production from the acidogenic and methanogenic reactors with or without the addition of Nitrite implies that the Nitrite has no significant effect on the overall biogas production of two-phase sludge AD process.High-throughput sequencing analysis shows that the microbial communities of bacteria and archaea in two-phase AD reactors significantly changes after the addition of Nitrite.Vulcanibacillus (bacteria) and Candidatus Methanofastidiosum (archaea) become the dominant genera in the acidogenic and methanogenic reactors with the Nitrite respectively.These findings provide new insights about using Nitrite to promote the organic matter degradation of sewage sludge in a semicontinuous two-phase AD system.

Accurate quantification of dissolved organic nitrogen(DON) has been a challenge due to the cumulative analytical errors in the conventional method via subtracting dissolved inorganic nitrogen species(DIN) from total dissolved nitrogen(TDN). Size exclusion chromatography coupled with an organic nitrogen detector(SEC-OND) has been developed as a direct method for quantification and characterization of DON. However, the applications of SECOND method still subject to poor separations between DON and DIN species and unsatisfied N recoveries of macromolecules. In this study, we packed a series of SEC columns with different lengths and resin materials for separation of different N species and designed an independent vacuum ultraviolet(VUV) oxidation device for complete oxidation converting N species to nitrate. To guarantee sufficient N recoveries, the operation conditions were optimized as oxidation time ≥ 30 min, injection mass(sample concentration × injection volume) Nitrite, nitrate, and ammonia. When applied to river water, lake water, wastewater effluent, groundwater, and landfill leachate, the SEC-OND method could quantify DON as well as DIN species accurately and conveniently even the DIN/TDN ratio reached 0.98.

Heterogeneous uptake of NO_(2) by sodium acetate droplets and secondary Nitrite aerosol formation

The high NO_(3)^(−)concentration in fine particulate matters(PM_(2.5))during heavy haze events has attracted much attention,but the formation mechanism of nitrates remains largely uncertain,especially concerning heterogeneous uptake of NOX by aqueous phase.In this work,the heterogeneous uptake of NO_(2) by sodium acetate(NaAc)droplets with different NO_(2) concentrations and relative humidity(RH)conditions is investigated by microscopic Fourier transform infrared spectrometer(micro-FTIR).The IR feature changes of aqueous droplets indicate the acetate depletion and Nitrite formation in humid environment.This implies that acetate droplets can provide the alkaline aqueous circumstances caused by acetate hydrolysis and acetic acid(HAc)volatilization for Nitrite formation during the NO_(2) heterogeneous uptake.Meanwhile,the Nitrite formation will exhibit a pH neutralizing effect on acetate hydrolysis,further facilitating HAc volatilization and acetate depletion.The heterogeneous uptake coefficient increases from 5.2×10^(−6) to 1.27×10^(−5) as RH decreases from 90%to 60%due to the enhanced HAc volatilization.Furthermore,no obvious change in uptake coefficient with different NO_(2) concentrations is observed.This work may provide a new pathway for atmospheric nitrogen cycling and secondary Nitrite aerosol formation.

Nitrite sensor using activated biochar synthesised by microwave-assisted

Developing applications for the by-products obtained from waste processing is vital for resource recovery.The synthesis of ZnCl2-activated biochar with high electrocatalytic activity was carried out by the microwave-assisted pyrolysis of pineapple peel and subsequent chemical activation process.Activated biochar is employed in the electrochemical sensing of Nitrite by drop casting in a glassy carbon electrode(GCE).The activated biochar exhibited a stacked carbon sheet,254 m2 g−1 Brunauer,Emmett and Teller(BET)surface area,0.076 cm3 g−1 pore volume,189.53 m2 g−1 micropore area and oxygen-containing functional groups.The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of the modified GCE showed a reduced charge transfer resistance of 61%.This is crucial to determine the electrochemical properties of biochar.The sensor showed a significant current response and an excellent limit of detection of 0.97µmol L−1.The modified-activated biochar electrochemical sensor demonstrated high selectivity,reproducibility(RSD=2.4%),and stability(RSD=2.6%).

Inhaled Nitrites have been used recreationally for centuries,particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM).^([1])After inhalation,this substance quickly enters the blood;within seconds,it can produce a temporary sense of warmth and pleasure,and relax the anal sphincter to relieve the pain of anal sex.^([2,3])“Popper”and“rush”are slang terms given to drugs of the chemical class called amyl Nitrite or isobutyl Nitrite.Nitrites oxidize hemoglobin to methemoglobins and may increase proteolytic susceptibility of hemoglobin,leading to oxidative hemolysis.Thus,their use is associated with methemoglobinemia and hemolytic anemia,^([4])although Nitrite-induced hemolytic anemia has been described only in rare cases (supplementary Table 1).^([4-9])Herein,we report a case of acute hemolytic anemia associated with the use of amyl Nitrite.

Sources and transformations of Nitrite in the Amundsen Sea in summer 2019 and 2020 as revealed by nitrogen and oxygen isotopes

In this study,the nitrogen and oxygen isotope compositions of Nitrite in the upper 150 m water column of the Amundsen Sea in the summer of 2019 and 2020 were measured to reveal the distribution and transformation of Nitrite in the euphotic zone of the Southern Ocean.We found that primary Nitrite maxima(PNMs)are widely present in the Amundsen Sea,where the depth of occurrence deepens from east to west and Nitrite concentrations increases.Evidence from dual isotopes suggests that the formation of PNMs in all regions of the Amundsen Sea is dominated by ammonia oxidation.More importantly,the nitrogen and oxygen isotope compositions of Nitrite in the Amundsen Sea mixed layer are abnormal,and their depth profiles are mirror symmetrical.Isotopic anomalies exhibit spatial variations,with central surface water having the lowest nitrogen isotope composition(−89.9‰±0.2‰)and western surface water having the highest oxygen isotope composition(63.3‰±0.3‰).Isotopic exchange reaction between nitrate and Nitrite is responsible for these isotope anomalies,as both nitrogen and oxygen isotopes have large isotopic fractionation and opposite enrichment effects.This proves that isotopic exchange reaction operates extensively in different regions of the Amundsen Sea.Our study highlights the unique role of dual isotopes of Nitrite in deepening the understanding of nitrogen cycle.Further studies on ammonia oxidation and isotopic exchange between nitrate and Nitrite are warranted in the future to understand their roles in the nitrogen cycle in the Southern Ocean.

Ion-exchange polymers modified bacterial cellulose electrodes for the selective removal of Nitrite ions from tail water of dyeing wastewater

Ion-exchange polymer and modified carbonization bacterial cellulose(CBC)electrodes were fabricated using varying amounts of cation-exchange polymers(glutaric acid(GA)and sulfosuccinic acid(SSA))and assembled within an asymmetric capacitive deionization unit(p-CDI).The performance of selective NO2-electro-adsorption was studied.The AC/CBCSSA group showed a better salt adsorption capacity(14.56 mg/g)and Nitrite removal efficiency(71.01%)than the AC/CBC-GA(10.72 mg/g,47.83%)and AC/AC(4.81 mg/g,12.74%)groups.It was confirmed that the CBC-SSA/GA electrodes enhanced Nitrite selectivity and increased the adsorption capacity,and the total amounts of adsorbed anions increased when the applied voltage was increased from 0.8 to 1.2 V,while the molar fraction of nitrate decreased.The competitive and preferential adsorption of anions was further investigated using different binary solutions of anions and occurred in the following sequence:NO2->SO42->NO3->F-≈Cl-.Furthermore,the p-CDI units were applied to remove Nitrite in real wastewater samples,and the results showed that they had excellent reusability and application for use in dyeing wastewater treatment.

Nitrite pre-treatment of dewatered sludge for microbial fuel cell application

The effect of pre-treatment of dewatered sludge using different Nitrite concentrations and p H for microbial fuel cell(MFC) application was investigated. The results show that the addition of Nitrite was feasible to increase the solubilization rate of the sludge and may reduce mass transfer limitation at the anode. This helped the MFC to reach higher voltage and to generate more power. The higher free nitrous acid(FNA) concentration under the acidic condition helped to increase sludge solubilization. However, under an alkaline condition, during which the FNA concentration was relatively low, the solubilization of the sludge was higher. The highest voltage and power density produced was 390 mV and 153 mW/m^2, respectively, with the addition of Nitrite at 100 mg-N/L and pH 9. Furthermore,it was found that elevated levels of FNA could inhibit electrogenic bacteria thus reducing power generation.

Nitrite inhalants use, sexual behaviors and HIV/syphilis infection among men who have sex with men in Chongqing, China

Background:Emerging evidence indicates Nitrite inhalants have become increasingly prevalent among men who have sex with men(MSM).The present study aimed to describe the prevalence and correlates of Nitrite inhalants use and its association with risky sexual behaviors and human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)/syphilis infection among MSM in Chongqing,a city in China where MSM were burdened with the highest pooled HIV prevalence in the country.Methods:This cross-sectional study was conducted in Chongqing between March 2019 and February 2020.Information of demographics,drug use,sexual behaviors and HIV testing was collected through an anonymous survey.Blood samples were drawn from each participant for the diagnoses of HIV and syphilis.Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate factors correlated with Nitrite inhalants use and its relationship with risky sexual behaviors and HIV/syphilis infection.Results:Of the 1151 eligible participants,18.9%(218)reported use of at least one type of recreational drugs in the past 6 months,and Nitrite inhalants were the most commonly used substance(17.7,95%confidence interval[CI]:15.6-20.2%).The proportions of participants reported engaging in group sex and practicing condomless internal ejaculation during anal sex in the past six months were 5.8%(95%CI:4.4-7.2%)and 41.7%(95%CI:38.7-44.7%),respectively.The general prevalence of HIV and syphilis infection among the enrolled MSM were 16.8%(95%CI:14.7-19.0%)and 12.6%(95%CI:10.7-14.4%),respectively.Factors positively associated with Nitrite inhalants use included:age<25(adjusted odds ratio[aOR]=2.08,95%CI:1.10-3.94),monthly individual income≥CNY 3000(Chinese Yuan)(aOR=1.95,95%CI:1.18-3.22),preferring receptive anal intercourse(aOR=2.27,95%CI:1.34-3.84)and versatile anal intercourse(aOR=2.60,95%CI:1.64-4.13),age at first anal intercourse<18(aOR=1.79,95%CI:1.21-2.67),engaging in group sex in the past six months(aOR=9.34,95%CI:4.95-17.63),having multiple male sex partners in the past 6 months(aOR=2.32,95%CI:1.50-3.58),practicing CI

Sodium Nitrite-derived nitric oxide protects rat testes against ischemia/reperfusion injury

Testicular torsion,a common urologic emergency,is primarily caused by ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)injury of the testis.Nitric oxide (NO)-derived from Nitrite (NO2-)has been reported to have prominent therapeutic effects on I/R injury in the heart,liver,and brain;however,its effects on testicular I/R injury have not been evaluated.This study,therefore,investigated whether NO from NO2^-is beneficial in a rat model of testicular I/R injury which eventually results in impaired spermatogenesis.Male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to the following seven groups:group A,sham-operated control group;Group B,I/R with no treatment;Groups C, D,and E,I/R followed by treatment with three different doses of NO2^-;Group F,I/R followed by administration of NO2-and NO scavenger (2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-l-oxyl-3-oxide potassium salt [C-PTIO]);and Group G,I/R followed by administration of nitrate (NO3^-).NO2^-,NO3^-,and C-PTIO were intravenously administered.Histological examination of the testes and the western blot analysis of caspase-3 were performed.Levels of antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation were measured. Germ cell apoptosis,oxidative stress,antioxidant enzymatic function,and lipid peroxidation in Group B were significantly higher than those in Group A.Group B exhibited an abnormal testicular morphology and impaired spermatogenesis.In contrast,testicular damages were attenuated in the NO2^-treatment groups,which were caused by reduction in superoxide and peroxyNitrite levels and an inhibition of caspase-3-dependent apoptosis.The results of this study suggest NO2^-to be a promising therapeutic agent with anti-oxidant and anti-apoptotic properties in testicular I/R injury.
