The distribution and dynamic changes of regional or national population data with long time series are very important for regional planning,resource allocation,government decision-making,disaster assessment,ecological protection,and other sustainability ***,the existing population datasets such as LandScan and WorldPop all provide data from 2000 with limited time series,while GHS-POP only utilizes land use data with limited *** view of the limited remote sensing images of long time series,it is necessary to combine existing multi-source remote sensing data for population spatialization *** this research,we developed a nighttime light desaturation index(NTLDI).Through the cross-sensor calibration model based on an autoencoder convolutional neural network,the NTLDl was calibrated with the same period Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite Day/Night Band(VIRS-DNB)***,the geographically weighted regression method is used to determine the population density of China from 1990 to 2020 based on the long time series ***,the change characteristics and the driving factors of China's population spatial distribution are *** large-scale,long-term population spatialization results obtained in this study are of great significance in government planning and decision-making,disaster assessment,resource allocation,and other aspects.

An improved methodology for the extraction and mapping of urban built-up areas at a global scale is presented in this *** Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS)-based multispectral data were combined with the Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite(VIIRS)-based nighttime light(NTL)data for robust extraction and mapping of urban built-up *** MODIS-based newly proposed Urban Built-up Index(UBI)was combined with NTL data,and the resulting Enhanced UBI(EUBI)was used as a single master image for global extraction of urban built-up *** to higher variation of the EUBI with respect to geographical regions,a region-specific threshold approach was used to extract urban built-up *** research provided 500-m-resolution global urban built-up map of year *** resulted map was compared with three existing moderate-resolution global maps and one high-resolution map in the United *** comparative analysis demonstrated finer details of the urban built-up cover estimated by the resultant map.

Power outage and environmental justice in Winter Storm Uri: an analytical workflow based on nighttime light remote sensing

The intensity of extreme weather events has been increasing,posing a unique threat to society and highlighting the importance of our electrical power system,a key component in our *** severe weather events,quickly identifying power outage impact zones and affected communities is crucial for informed disaster ***,a lack of household-level power outage data impedes timely and precise *** address these challenges,we introduced an analytical workflow using NASA’s Black Marble daily nighttime light(NTL)images to detect power outages from the 2021 Winter Storm *** workflow includes adjustments to mitigate viewing angle and snow reflection *** outage is detected by comparing storm-time and baseline(normal condition)NTL images using an empirical adjusted *** outcomes of the workflow are 500-meter resolution power outage maps,which have the optimal correlation with real outage tracking data when NTL intensity is reduced by 26%.With the resultant power outage maps,we analyzed the relations between power outages and disadvantaged populations in 126 Texas counties and 4182 census tracts to evaluate environmental justice in the *** results show that Latino/Hispanic communities tend to suffer more from power outages at both the county and census tract levels.

The local climate zone(LCZ)scheme has been widely utilized in regional climate modeling,urban planning,and thermal comfort ***,existing LCz classification methods face challenges in characterizing complex urban structures and human activities involving local climatic *** this study,we proposed a novel LCZ mapping method that fully uses space-borne multi-view and diurnal observations,*** Ziyuan-3 stereo imageries(2.1 m)and Luojia-1 nighttime light(NTL)data(130 m).Firstly,we performed land cover classification using multiple machine learning methods(*** forest(RF)and XGBoost algorithms)and various features(***,textural,multi-view features,3D urban structure parameters(USPs),and NTL).In addition,we developed a set of new cumulative elevation indexes to improve building roughness *** indexes can estimate building roughness directly from fused point clouds generated by both along-and across-track ***,based on the land cover and building roughness results,we extracted 2D and 3D USPs for different land covers and used multi-classifiers to perform LCZ *** results for Beijing,China,show that our method yielded satisfactory accuracy for LCZ mapping,with an overall accuracy(OA)of 90.46%.The overall accuracy of land cover classification using 3D USPs generated from both along-and across-track modes increased by 4.66%,compared to that of using the single along-track ***,the OA value of LCZ mapping using 2D and 3D USPs(88.18%)achieved a better result than using only 2D USPs(83.83%).The use of NTL data increased the classification accuracy of LCZs E(bare rock or paved)and F(bare soil or sand)by 6.54%and 3.94%,*** refined LCZ classification achieved through this study will not only contribute to more accurate regional climate modeling but also provide valuable guidance for urban planning initiatives aimed at enhancing thermal comfort and overall livabillity in urban areas

The housing vacancy rate(HVR)is an important index in assessing the healthiness of residential real estate *** China,it is hardly to take advantage of the basic data of real estate information due to the opaque of those *** this paper,the HVR is estimated to two *** the grid level,urban area ratio was calculated by nighttime images after eliminating outliers of nighttime images and night light intensity of non-residential pixels in mixed pixels by a proposed modified optimal threshold method,and built-up areas in each pixel were extracted from the land-cover ***,the HVR is calculated by comparing the light intensity of specific grid with the light intensity of full occupancy rate *** the administrative scale,the GCI(‘ghost city’index)is constructed by calculating the ratio of the total light radiation intensity of a city to the total construction land area of the *** overall spatial differentiation pattern of the vacant houses in the national prefecture level administrative regions is *** following conclusions were drawn:vacant housing is rare in certain eastern coastal cities and regions in China with relatively fast economic *** based on exhausted resources,some mountainous cities,and cities with relatively backward economic development more typically showed high levels of housing *** GCI of prefecture-level administrative units gradually declined from north to south,whereas the east-west distribution showed a parabolic *** city level decreased,the GCI registered a gradual upward ***’s urban housing vacancy can be divided into five categories:industry or resources driven,government planned,epitaxy expansionary,environmental constraint and speculative activate by combining the spatial distribution of housing vacancy with the factors of natural environment,social economic development level,and population density into consideration.

The agglomeration of the rural e-commerce industry represented by Taobao villages has reshaped the existing urban and rural spatial organization and proposed a new urbanization *** study identified the spatiotemporal characteristics of Taobao villages in Quanzhou city and built panel regression models to examine the impact of these villages on urbanization level,which is measured via nighttime light(NTL).The results show that(1)while the number of Taobao villages in Quanzhou city has increased rapidly,it has also experienced sporadic growth and monocentric agglomeration,finally forming a polycentric agglomeration pattern;(2) Taobao villages display a significant near-city tendency,and the urbanization level of towns with Taobao villages is higher than that of towns without Taobao villages;(3) the panel regression model highlights that Taobao villages have a significant positive impact on urbanization *** villages near the city exhibit a greater effect;meanwhile,those that are far away from the city cannot improve their urbanization level unless they reach a considerable degree of *** e-commerce will become an important direction for the transformation of urban fringe areas,which provides a certain reference for the development of new urbanization in China.

Although the urban heat island(UHI) is a well-documented phenomenon, relatively little information in the literature is available about its impact on summer extreme heat event(EHE). As UHI is characterized by increased temperature, it can potentially increase the magnitude and duration of EHEs within cities. Based on daily maximum temperature records from 62 observation stations in Zhejiang province from the period 1971-2011 and satellite-measured nighttime light imagery from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program(DMSP) Operational Linescan System(OLS) during 1992-2010, we analyzed the long-term change of summer EHEs and its association with the rapid urbanization process. The results could be concluded as follows:(1) Zhejiang has experienced rapid urbanization and dramatic growth in urban areas in the past two decades, especially after 2000.(2) The summer mean maximum temperature and the 95 th percentile of summer daily maximum temperature in most of its stations have increased, with the most significant increase occurring in the highly urbanized areas including the city belt around Hangzhou Bay, Taizhou-Wenzhou and Jinghua-Yiwu city belts.(3) The hot days and hot-day degrees, defined by both daily 95 th percentile and the threshold of 35℃, show that the UHI effect causes additional hot days and heat stress in urban stations compared to rural *** results in this study suggest that the UHI effect should be determined and incorporated in preparing high temperature forecasts in cities.

Regional sustainable development necessitates a holistic understanding of spatiotemporal variations in ecosystem carbon storage(ECS),particularly in ecologically sensitive areas with arid and semi-arid *** this study,we calculated the ECS in the Ningxia Section of Yellow River Basin,China from 1985 to 2020 using the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs(InVEST)model based on land use *** further predicted the spatial distribution of ECS in 2050 under four land use scenarios:natural development scenario(NDS),ecological protection scenario(EPS),cultivated land protection scenario(CPS),and urban development scenario(UDS)using the patch-generating land use simulation(PLUS)model,and quantified the influences of natural and human factors on the spatial differentiation of ECS using the geographical detector(Geodetector).Results showed that the total ECS of the study area initially increased from 1985 until reaching a peak at 402.36×10^(6) t in 2010,followed by a decreasing trend to *** spatial distribution of ECS was characterized by high values in the eastern and southern parts of the study area,and low values in the western and northern *** 1985 and 2020,land use changes occurred mainly through the expansion of cultivated land,woodland,and construction land at the expense of unused *** total ECS in 2050 under different land use scenarios(ranked as EPS>CPS>NDS>UDS)would be lower than that in *** light was the largest contributor to the spatial differentiation of ECS,with soil type and annual mean temperature being the major natural driving *** of this study could provide guidance on the ecological construction and high-quality development in arid and semi-arid areas.

World cultural heritage refers to properties recognized as having historical, social, and anthropological value. Global urbanization has changed the land cover, land use, transportation, landscape, and local environment in cities, and thus exposed World Heritage sites to risks induced by direct or indirect damaging factors. In this paper, an urbanization intensity index (UII) was developed to quantitatively measure urban dynamics in the vicinity of World Heritage sites. This index is based on three global Earth observation datasets, including a global human settlement layer, a global population grid product, and a global nighttime light imagery. Large UII values represent high urbanization levels and intensive human activities in the study area and vice versa. The assessment results show that the mean UII value at 79 world cultural heritage sites in the Belt and Road region increased from 0.26 in 2000 to 0.29 in 2015. The heritage sites were then classified into four types based on the change rates of UIIs. A total of seven heritage sites were identified as exposed to risks due to urban sprawl and infrastructure expansion. The UII dataset can be combined with UNESCO’s periodic reports and site-specific data to provide valuable information for international communities to develop heritage preservation policies.

The Impact of City Cluster Development on the Inter-City Disparity:Evidence from China

City clusters are important carriers for China's future urbanization and vital areas for promotingcoordinated regional development and common prosperity. The authors first divide the city clusters into Types Ⅰ, Ⅱ, and Ⅲ according to the characteristics of their development stages, and measure the degree of development of city clusters by using city-level night time light(NTL) data and inter-city commuting time, and empirically identify the types of China's city clusters. On that basis, the authors examine the influence of city cluster development on the inter-city disparity from a perspective of urban agglomeration. The results show that the development of Type Ⅰ city clusters can lead to the widest inter-city disparity, and that of Type Ⅱ city clusters ranks the second place in this regard, while that of Type Ⅲ city clusters can narrow the inter-city ***, using the 268-year historical geographic data of the Qing Dynasty, the authors construct instrumental variables to address the endogeneity issues, and find that the above conclusions are robust. This study also finds that the factor allocation for the development of Types Ⅰ and Ⅱ city clusters is oriented towards labor, while that for Type Ⅲ city clusters is oriented towards capital. Besides, different types of city clusters vary in the extent of correcting factor misallocation for their development. The differences in the orientation of factor allocation and the extent of factor misallocation correction constitute the main mechanism for the heterogeneous influence of city cluster development on the inter-city disparity. China's city cluster development strategy should adopt a category-based approach to avoid homogenization, conform to the objective laws, and make greater use of central cities' spatial spillover effects.
