Spatial and temporal effects on seed dispersal and seed predation of musa acuminata in southern Yunnan, China

Wild bananas are abundant in tropical areas and many ecologists have observed that the succession process is quicker following increased *** study was conducted to analyze animal–seed interactions and their effects on the seed fate of a wild banana species(musa acuminata)in tropical southern Yunnan(China)through experiments considering spatial(site and habitat)and temporal(seasons)*** largest proportion of fruits(81%)was removed by frugivorous seed dispersers,especially by bats at *** 13%of the fruits were removed by climbing seed predators(different species of rats).In the exclosure treatment,rodents accounted for a significantly higher total artificially exposed seed removal number than ants,but with spatial and temporal *** highest seed predation rate by rodents(70%)was found in forest with wild banana stands,corresponding with the highest rodent diversity(species numbers and abundance)among the habitat *** contrast,the seed removal number by ants(57%)was highest in the open land habitats,but there was no close correlation with ant *** removal numbers by ants were significantly higher in the dry compared to the rainy season,but rodent activity showed no differences between *** overall results suggest that the largest proportion of seeds produced by wild banana are primarily dispersed by *** seed dispersal by bats at nighttime is essential for wild banana seeds to escape seed predation.

Alternative splicing of MaMYB16L regulates starch degradation in banana fruit during ripening

The alternative splicing of select genes is an important mechanism to regulate responses to endogenous and environmental signals in ***,the role of alternative splicing in regulating fruit ripening remains ***,we discovered that MaMYB16L,an R1-type MYB transcription factor,undergoes alternative splicing and generates two transcripts,the full-length isoform MaMYB16L and a truncated form MaMYB16S,in banana *** banana fruit ripening,the alternative splicing process intensifies with downregulated MaMYB16L and upregulated ***,MaMYB16L is a transcriptional repressor that directly binds with the promoters of many genes associated with starch degradation and MaDREB2,a positive ripening regulator,and represses their *** contrast,MaMBY16S lacks a DNA-binding domain but competitively combines and forms non-functional heterodimers with functional ***16L-MaMYB16S heterodimers decrease the binding capacity and transrepression activity of *** downregulation of MaMYB16L and the upregulation of MaMYB16S,that is,a decreased ratio of active to non-active isoforms,facilitates the activation of ripening-related genes and thereby promotes fruit ***,the transient overexpression of MaMYB16S promotes banana fruit ripening,whereas the overexpression of MaMYB16L delays this ***,the alternative splicing of MaMYB16L might generate a self-controlled regulatory loop to regulate banana fruit ripening.

Sustainable intensification of agriculture in Africa

Sustainable intensification is a key component of agricultural development in Africa,urgently needed to wean the continent off foreign food supply and to limit agricultural farmland *** is expected that a relatively small fraction of farmers will adopt fertilizer technology,as profits in current economic settings are relatively small while risks are considerable with varying prices and uncertain yield *** smallholders depend on off-farm income and local markets for food *** adjustments are therefore needed to allow management of larger units of land by trained farmers willing to take this opportunity,while recognizing land right *** are large opportunities for African commodity crops to improve food security,including cassava and East African highland banana that strongly respond to fertilizer with limited environmental risks under good *** requires investments in better functioning markets,local fertilizer production facilities that can produce regional crop blends and cost-efficient distribution networks,providing balanced fertilizers for African farmers.
