Performance Evaluation of an Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) Based multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) Virtual Private Network

This paper evaluates the performance of Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) based multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) virtual private network (VPN) in a small to medium sized organization. The demand for security in data networks has been increasing owing to the high cyber attacks and potential risks associated with networks spread over distant geographical locations. The MPLS networks ride on the public network backbone that is porous and highly susceptible to attacks and so the need for reliable security mechanisms to be part of the deployment plan. The evaluation criteria concentrated on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Video conferencing with keen interest in jitter, end to end delivery and general data flow. This study used both structured questionnaire and observation methods. The structured questionnaire was administered to a group of 70 VPN users in a company. This provided the study with precise responses. The observation method was used in data simulations using OPNET Version 14.5 Simulation software. The results show that the IPSec features increase the size of data packets by approximately 9.98% translating into approximately 90.02% effectiveness. The tests showed that the performance metrics are all well within the recommended standards. The IPSec Based MPLS Virtual private network is more stable and secure than one without IPSec.

Bandwidth constrained QoS routing scheme for MPLS traffic engineering

Traffic engineering has been essential to optimize the utilization of network resource and to provide for QoS, QoS routing is a basic component of traffic engineering in MPLS networks, Aiming at some shortages of certain existing routing algorithms, we propose an efficient bandwidth constrained QoS routing scheme with additional traffic engineering objectives. The objectives of traffic engineering considered in our algorithm are to reduce the blocking probability of requests and to evenly distribute the traffic load. Accordingly, the algorithm avoids using critical links as far as possible by assigning large weights to them as a function of their criticality. The critical links can be specified according to max-flow reduction weight, a new link weight introduced by the algorithm. Then, a new defined additive metric, path saturation, is used to select optimal path. Extensive simulations are carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm in terms of call blocking probability and link resource utilization. Compared to other several routing algorithms, the simulation results show the new algorithm performs well.

Service Adaptation and label Forwarding Mechanism for MPLS-TP

Most services borne by transport networks have been transitioned away from Time Division Multiplexing （TDM） towards IP-based. New technology is therefore required to effectively transport packet services. multiprotocol label switching Transport Profile （MPLS-TP） is such a technology which is connection-oriented, capable of murtiservice adaptation, and has a flexible label forwarding mechanism. This paper analyzes the characteristics of MPLS-TP, and introduces its latest standardization development. Key issues including data forwarding plane, service adaptation, and label forwarding mechanism are discussed, as well as service implementation of Virtual Private Network （VPN） based on dual-label transport. MPLS-TP applications are summarized in conclusion.

The technologies of IP over WDM have presently received increasing attention owing to the rapid growth in Internet traffic and the need for next generation Internet technologies. The challenge now is how to integrate the services of IP over WDM optical networks to take full advantages of WDM technologies and IP technologies, and yield a high throughput optical platform directly underpinning next generation data networks. This article discusses some of the architecture and technology issues for the design of IP over WDM optical networks.

Several Issues in the Development of Packet Transport Networks

Several key issues affect the development and standardization of Packet Transport Networks （PTN） and multiprotocol label switching Transport Profile （MPLS-TP）. These include the end-to-end Quality of Service （QoS） mechanism, Layered network architecture, introduction of layer-3 functions, and data-plane Ioopback functions. This paper introduces several views on the construction and maintenance of PTN, and on the requirements of PTN services. After an analysis of Traffic Engineering （TE） based on multiprotocol label switching （MPLS） and Differentiated Service （DiffServ）, a service-oriented end-to-end QoS guarantee mechanism is proposed. An alternative to introducing layer-3 functions into PTN is also proposed, based on PTN layered architecture defined in the available MPLS-TP standards and drafts. Requirements of data-plane loopback functions are discussed in conclusion.
