Sports video summarization and adaptation for application in mobile communication

Sports video appeals to large audiences due to its high commercial potentials. Automatically extracting useful semantic information and generating highlight summary from sports video to facilitate users' accessing requirements is an important problem, especially in the forthcoming broadband mobile communication and the need for users to access their multimedia information of interest from anywhere at anytime with their most convenient digital equipments. A system to generate highlight summaries oriented for mobile applications is introduced, which includes highlight extraction and video adaptation. In this system, several highlight extraction techniques are provided for field sports video and racket sports video by using multi-modal information. To enhance users' viewing experience and save bandwidth, 3D animation from highlight segment is also generated. As an important procedure to make video analysis results universally applicable, video transcoding techniques are applied to adapt the video for mobile communication environment and user preference. Experimental results are encouraging and show the advantage and feasibility of the system for multimedia content personalization, enhancement and adaptation to meet different user preference and network/device requirements.

Nondeterministic Temporal Relations in multimedia Data

Synchronization is an important issue in multimedia systems which integrate a variety of temporally related media objects. One part of synchronization is the representation of temporal information. With the emerging illteractive multimedia, deterministic temporal models are replaced by nondeterministic ones with more expressiveness. This paper classifies temporal models by their expressiveness, and evaluates relevant nondeterministic temporal relations in multimedia data. Additionally, an intervalbased nondeterndnistic model based on a complete temporal operator set is proposed providing highlevel abstractions and a high degree of expressiveness for interactive multimedia systems.

A file format for storage of scalable video is proposed. A generic model is presented to enable a codec independent description of scalable video stream. The relationships, especially the dependencies, among sub-streams in a scalable video stream are specified sufficiently and effectively in the proposed model. Complying with the presented scalable video stream model, the file format for scalable video is proposed based on ISO Base Media File Format, which is simple and flexible enough to address the demands of scalable video application as well as the non-scalable ones.

Optimum Transmitter Power Control in WCDMA Cellular systems

Power control is an important technique in WCDMA mobile systems for both increasing system capacity and guaranteeing the required QoS (time delay and wireless link transmission quality) of multimedia services. The optimum power control for narrow band CDMA cellular systems is a problem of single threshold optimization. Because these systems have only one type of traffic and have the same QoS requirement. However, WCDMA mobile system should provide multimedia services and different types of traffic have different QoS requirements. Thus, the power control in WCDMA mobile systems isn't a problem of single threshold optimizing, but turns into the optimizing problem of multi-threshold. We analyze the power control problem in WCDMA cellular mobile systems and propose the optimum transmitter power control algorithm. Three criteria to optimize transmitter power levels of multi-thresholds based on grading the priority orders of multimedia services are proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms are more effective than conventional algorithms and can provide better performance for WCDMA cellular mobile systems.

MVP is a digital signal processor, which is of MIMD structure and fit for multimedia application. MVP has several processors in it, and its operation is characteristic of parallelism and pipeline; therefore, real-time signal processing can be done on it. This paper presents the image processing system based on MVP, explains the principles of parallel task assignment and hardware pipeline design, and gives out the example of target tracking and edge detection.

Real-time video signal transmission over a terahertz communication link

A 2.4-m communication link operating at 3.9 THz based on a terahertz quantum cascade laser and a terahertz quantum well photodetector （THz QWP） are introduced. The lumped electrical models of THz QWP for small signals are presented. A discussion of the bandwidth limit of the detecting circuit is presented. Using direct on off-keying modulation and intensity detection, the transmission of digital video signal with a data rate of 2.5 Mb/s is demonstrated. Pseudo-random binary sequences are transmitted to investigate the bit-error rate （BER） at different rates. Result shows the error free transmission when the rate is below 5 Mb/s.

The development of assessment management system has been discussed for a long *** motivation always focuses on the evaluation of learners’ ability or on the difficulties of *** common examination content could be composed by text or simple figures,and the assistant functionalities could also be developed to meet the individual *** these functionalities couldn’t interoperate with each others in this situation,and the text content isn’t enough to represent the examination *** this paper,we proposed a novel system architecture to make interoperability realizable based on web service technologies then we also tried to integrate the multimedia streaming resources into our MAMS （MINE Assessment Management System）.Through this architecture,we could easily integrate external functionalities without redeveloping the ***,our MAMS could utilize the streaming techniques to provide multimedia information to users.

The growing class of personal multimedia devices （camera phone,digital camera,portable desk-tops,audio-and video-based multimedia products） as well as imaging systems and multimedia communication systems,that demand real-time processing capability with low power consumption,becomes one driving factor for developing efficient video processing and compression techniques with low power *** a state-of-the-art video coding standard which offers a powerful set of coding tools to meet the demands of various applications,H.264 extends its profile and also thinks about starting a new project which may be called as "H.265" to meet the demands of video contents with higher resolution,higher bit depths and color sampling *** compression efficiency and lower power consumption are the two major challenges for the current development in video processing and coding *** this talk,a brief overview of H.264 and its extensions will first be provided with the analysis on the performance relationships among *** emerging possibilities for new coding techniques will be ***,video processing and compression techniques targeting the objective of real-time and low-power processing are presented for different kinds of multimedia applications like smart car,video telephony,video surveillance,high definition video broadcast and *** the different kinds of applications result in diversity in video content,the techniques are designed accordingly to pursue the best trade-off between the power consumption and processing *** together with the hardware implementation schemes are selectively introduced with performance comparison and discussion.

Working with the traditional co-processor interface,it doesn’t require the extensible processor core and has least impact on the existing hardware and *** paper proposes a framework for design space exploration and automatic co-processor instructions generation,in which application profiling,instruction identification and evaluation proceed seamlessly and *** optimal instruction set of the co-processor under given constraints is automatically generated from the source code of the *** demonstrate the effectiveness of the method we generate the instruction set of a SPARC V8 co-processor for a VoIP *** experiment gives promising results with the speedup of factor 2.3.
