Pre-Weaning Growth Traits in Nigerian Indigenous Pig Crossbreds

Forty-seven hybrid progenies from crossbreeding between the Nigerian indigenous pig (NIP) and Large white pigs were used. Body measurements and live weight were recorded weekly from first week of birth to their weaning date. Body measurements taken were Body Weight (BW), Body Length (BL), Body Height (BH), Heart girth (HG) and Rump circumference (RC) of crossbred progenies. The correlation between the reproductive parameters and growth performance of hybrid pigs were established with good management practice. The mean for weaning weight was 6.72 ± 0.02, birth weight 0.91 ± 0.13, litter size at birth 5.36 ± 1.87, litter size at weaning 5.29 ± 1.97, litter weight at birth 4.56 ± 1.57, total litter weight at weaning 33.91 ± 11.6, average daily weaning weight 0.73 ± 0.12, average litter size at birth 0.93 ± 0.11 and sex ratio 97.78% ± 8.61%. The male and female mean values for weight of animals were 6.96 ± 1.0 and 6.52 ± 0.9 with male heavier in weight and higher in morphometric traits such as body length, heart girth and rump circumference, while the female were high in morphometric traits such as snout length, ear length and body height. The correlation matrix for body weight against linear body measurements in pre-weaned NIP crossbreds indicates that all the parameters could be used to select for body weight. The linear equation generated by regressing body weight on snout length, body height, rump circumference, heart girth and body length could be used by resource poor pig farmers in the estimation of body weight of pre weaned crossbreds pigs if they cannot afford weighing scales.

Prioritization of W. Alarab Sub-Watersheds (North Jordan) for Conservation Measures Using RS, GIS, and Multi-Criteria Analysis

Soil erosion and high sediment flow are of eminent environmental concern in Wadi Alarab catchment, northern Jordan. The objective of this research is to conduct a prioritization scheme using RS, GIS, and multi-criteria analysis approach based on morphometric analysis, land use/land cover (LULC) change analysis, and soil loss modeling based on RUSLE model factors. ASTER GDEM and Arc GIS were utilized to delineate watersheds and extract the drainage networks using the Arc Hydro tool. Five basic morphometric parameters, five linear and five shape parameters, six LULC classes, and five soil erosion risk classes are applied to prioritize 13 sub-watersheds connected to W. Alarab basin. LANDSAT images were subjected to supervised classification (the Maximum Likelihood Method) to determine land use/cover changes and to establish the LULC map/layer. Soil erosion risk classes were estimated using the RULSE model. RULSE factors (R, K, L, S, C, and P) were calculated in a GIS environment, then multiplied together so as to estimate soil loss (ton·ha-1·yr-1) and to establish a soil erosion risk map for the entire watershed and the thirteen sub-watersheds. A GIS-based integration of the three layers compiled for each criterion reveals that six sub-watersheds (1, 5, 8, 9, 10, and 11) are categorized under low priority. Further, three sub-basins (4, 12, and 13) are fall under moderate priority, and four sub-basins (2, 3, 6, and 7) are designated as of high priority. It is obvious that 53.8% of these sub-basins must be prioritized immediately for soil and conservation measures. The validity of the achieved priority classes was tested statistically using Discriminant Analysis (DA), and the results showed that morphometric parameters, LULC analysis, and soil loss are accepted criteria for prioritization. These results are intended to help decision-makers to prepare reliable soil erosion management plans.

Quantitative Regionalization of W. Mujib-Wala Sub-Watersheds (Southern Jordan) Using GIS and Multivariate Statistical Techniques

In arid and semi-arid watersheds, sustainable management of natural resources (i.e. land, water and ecological resources), and watershed management are crucial issues in applied morphometric studies. Geomorphometric parameters and their interrelationships are of paramount importance in characterizing the morphology, topography, geology and structure, hydrological potential, and geomorphic evolution of such catchments. An analysis of spatial characteristics and morphological development of the demarcated 76 sub-watersheds related to W. Mujib-Wala catchment, was carried out using ASTER DEM and GIS. Multivariate statistical techniques such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Cluster Analysis (CA), and Discriminant Analysis (DA), were also employed to assess different aspects of drainage networks, and their morphometric properties. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) reduces the 22 morphometric parameters to five components, which explain 90.4% of total variance. The relationship of these components to the morphometric variables and to the individual sub-watersheds was evaluated, and then the degree of inter-correlation among the morphometric descriptors was explored. The 76 sub-watersheds were classified according to their individual relation to the components, and similarities in their morphometric characteristics. Regionalization of sub-watertsheds was achieved using hierarchical Cluster Analysis (CA). The validity of the resultant cluster groups was tested statistically by means of Discriminant Analysis. The present investigation provides information which highlights the benefit of geomorphometric analysis and multivariate statistics in modeling hydrological responses: i.e., surface runoff and sediment yield, hydrological assessment, water resources planning, and watershed management. Furthermore, the results can be useful for soil and water conservation planning, and assessment of flash floods potential.

Study of Tectonic Activity in Young Eastern Alborz, Central Iran on the Basis of Alluvial Fans in the Shahrud-Bastam Area

Alluvial fans are grouped in buildings which can provide important evidence of tectonic and climatic changes [1], Shahrud-Bastam area as structure point is located between Eastern Alborz structural zones in the north and central Iran structural zone in the south. In this study, we have measured 16 indicators morphotectonic on 79 alluvial fans and 46 catchments, according to the results of the measurements of morphometric parameters of alluvial basins and watershed, we find out that Qods-Armiyan’s fault zone has the most of tectonic activity between Tazareh and Shahrud fault regions. According to the index As, the development of alluvial fans often has a direct relationship with Level rise, which has a particular importance in the study field.

Active Tectonic Signs of Taftan Mountain (South Eastern of Iran)

This area, 12585.84 Km2, is located around Taftan Mountain in the east of Iran. It lies between latitudes 27°51' and 29°30'N, and longitudes 60°19' and 61°43'E. It has been studied on quantitative and qualitative morphometric and other active tectonic indices including symmetry of drainage basin (Asymmetry Factor), symmetry of latitudinal topography and sinuosity of main front. It is founded that relative active tectonic levels have been categorized in three groups: high, low and middle. Finally, all indices have been integrated with desert relations. Then the relative active tectonic level in area of 3-B is high;it is middle in the areas and sub-areas 1 of 1-B, 1-C, 1-D, 1-E, 3-A, 3-B, 4-A, 4-C, 5-A, 5-B, 9-A, 9-B and 9-C and it is low in sub-areas of 1-C and 9-A. The relative active tectonic levels in the east and south eastern areas where Mirjaveh and Khash cities are located are higher than other areas. Tectonic actions of the areas and sub-areas have been matched with structural elements.

Evaluation and Validation of Recent Freely-Available ASTER-GDEM V.2, SRTM V.4.1 and the DEM Derived from Topographical Map over SW Grombalia (Test Area) in North East of Tunisia

Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) provide one of the most useful digital datasets for a wide range of users. Both the Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (STRM V.4.1) topography and the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer Global Digital Elevation Model (ASTER-GDEM V.2) have been widely used in geomorphology, hydrology, tectonic, and others since they were made access to the public. The magnitude of vertical errors of two near-global DEMs—SRTM and ASTER-GDEM is compared and validated against a reference DEM which has a relatively high precision of 1:25,000 scale constructed from topographical map. Moreover, the reference DEM, ASTER-GDEM and SRTM were used as basic topographic data to extract some morphometric index. The parameters like slope and shaded reflectance maps, were derived from the elevation distribution to provide a more sensitive indication of DEM quality. A square area in the North East of Tunisia was selected as a case study to test and evaluate the elevation accuracy of ASTER-GDEM and SRTM. The relative accuracy approach and absolute accuracy were adopted to evaluate global DEMs. The comparisons show that SRTM overestimates and ASTER-GDEM underestimates elevations, both DEMs can be used to extract the elevations of required geometric data,?i.e.?sub watershed boundaries, drainage information and cross sections. However, small errors still exist in. The lower root mean square errors values indicate that SRTM is comparatively more accurate than ASTER-GDEM.

Tinca tinca(L.,1758)grafted into Turkish inland waters in 1970 has shown constantly widening distribution since *** is a locally consumed species with limited economic *** elucidation of length-weigh relation,condition factor and biological features are of great importance in the determination of the effects of different habitats on particular *** is regarded as an important species to be monitored among the fish *** study was intended to study some biological aspects of *** population in Asartepe Reservoir and to compare the results with the available *** study has been carried out on 131 *** species caught in Asartepe Reservoir between the periods of March 2015-February *** morphometric and meristic properties and the ratio of some diagnostic features to the standard length were *** highest and the lowest variations observed among the morphometric features were in body length with 21.35%and eye diameter with 8.31%.The corresponding values for the meristic features were pectoral fin unbranched rays with 30.09%and number of vertebrae with 2.68%.The highest percentage relative to the standard length was found in predorsal distance with 56.95%.The age distribution of *** population was between the ranges of 1-9 years of *** average weight and length were found to be 520.58±207.84 g(103-1,302 g)and 308.68±41.38 mm(190-429 mm).The parameters of a and b of length and weight relation and the correlation coefficient were found to be 0.9692,3.0522 and 1.6807±0.1264(1.4199-2.0368),*** results indicate that the growth level of *** population is satisfactory.

Evaluating the Geomorphological Features and Geotourism Potentials of Harmankaya Canyon (Bilecik, Turkey)

Harmankaya Canyon is located within boundaries of Karahasanlar settlement near Yenipazar district and Harmankoy settlement near Inhisar district in the east of the province of Bilecik. It was declared an area of nature protection under the name of "Harmankaya Canyon Nature Park" in 2012 by the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs. This study introduces Harmankaya Canyon, in the first place, by discussing its geomorphological characteristics, which play a significant role in the declaration of canyon as a nature park, along with the formation. Then, it discusses the potentials born by the canyon as a newly emerging destination of geotourism. Harmankaya Canyon was created by Harmankoy Stream, one tributary of Sakarya River, within Bilecik limestones of Mesozoic age. The canyon is 2.3 km long and 650-700 m deep, with a difference of altitude of 136 m between the entrance and the exit. Having quite an impressive view, the canyon was mainly formed as a result of fluvial processes under the control of lithological, tectonic, and climatic factors *** to its geomorphological characteristics, the Harmankaya Canyon Nature Park offers both sports and social attractions, like geotourism bound by geographical formations, canyoning relying on natural sources, trekking, rock-climbing, rafting, paragliding, and photography. Considering its location close to the larger Turkish cities, such as Istanbul, Bursa, Kocaeli, and Eskisehir and accessibility, the Harmankaya Canyon Nature Park is thought to meet all criteria for a destination of day-trips and weekend excursions for a relief from urban stress or for indulging in nature. SWOT (Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis was performed to unveil the touristic potential of the canyon. As a result, it was found to pose far more strengths and opportunities than weaknesses and threats.
