DEAR EDITOR,Major depressive disorder (MDD), commonly known as depression, is a mental disease characterized by a core symptom of low mood. It lasts at least two weeks (Badamasi et al., 2019;Wang et al., 2019) and is frequently accompanied by low self-esteem, loss of interest in routinely enjoyable activities, low energy, and unexplained pain (Huey et al., 2018;Park et al., 2012;Post & Warden, 2018;Rice et al., 2019;Xiao et al., 2018). Approximately 2%–8% of adults with MDD commit suicide (Richards & O'Hara, 2014;Strakowski & Nelson, 2015), and around half of suicidal individuals suffer depression or other mood disorders (Bachmann, 2018).

Aim:Clonidine is an α2adrenoceptor agonist that is frequently used to reducewithdrawal symptoms during opioid detoxification in *** long-termeffects of clonidine on withdrawal symptoms and its effects on subsequent drugexposure have not been thoroughly *** aim of the study was todetermine if clonidine administered during morphine withdrawal in rhesus mon-keys produces long-lasting effects on withdrawal symptoms and alters the effectsof subsequently taken drugs of ***:Adult male rhesus monkeyswere treated with increasing doses of morphine for 90 d to induce opiate (narcotic)*** immediate and long-lasting effects of 1 week’s administration ofclonidine were measured via the recording of morphine withdrawal signs and thesubsequent effects of challenge injections of morphine or ***:monkeys chronically treated with morphine displayed withdrawal signs that lasted2 weeks after cessation of morphine administration and displayed sensitized re-sponses to subsequent morphine and cocaine *** significantlyreduced certain morphine withdrawal signs and overall withdrawal score,but theseeffects did not persist upon cessation of clonidine *** to theeffects of morphine and cocaine were significantly reduced in monkeys previ-ously treated with ***:Our results suggest that in addition toits short-term alleviating effect on morphine withdrawal signs,clonidine may re-duce subsequent effects of drugs of abuse after prolonged abstinence.

[Objective] The paper was to understand the epidemiology of common diseases of laboratory monkeys in Kunming area. [Method]Through the investigation of sick and dead monkeys in a large-scale laboratory monkey breeding facility in Kunming area in 2014,the animals were classified depending on the main symptoms,and diseases were classified according to adult and juvenile monkeys. Data were analyzed by Office Excel 2010 software. [Result]Digestive system diseases,respiratory system diseases,trauma,reproductive system diseases,and locomotor system diseases were common disease types of laboratory monkeys in Kunming area,accounting for 47. 45%,13. 06%,12. 10%,11. 46% and 8. 92%,respectively. Common diseases included diarrhea,soft tissue injury,abortion,lobar pneumonia,dysentery,arthritis,bowel gas,chronic colitis,and extremely poor nutrition,and the ratios were 18. 47%,11. 15%,8. 91%,8. 28%,7. 96%,5. 10%,5. 10% and 5. 09%,respectively. [Conclusion]A set of scientific and reasonable measures for prevention and control of diseases is formulated,which is of great significance for improving the quantity and quality of laboratory monkeys and ensuring the accuracy of animal test results.

Effects of fibroblast transplantation into the internal pallidum on levodopa-induced dyskinesias in parkinsonian non-human primates

Recent studies have shown that fibroblast transplantation can modify the activity of basal ganglia networks in models of Parkinson＇s disease. To determine its effects on parkinsonian motor symptoms, we performed autologous dermal fibroblast transplantation into the internal pallidum （GPi） in two parkinsonian rhesus monkeys with stable levodopa- induced dyskinesias （LIDs）. Levodopa responses were assessed every week after transplantation for three months. A reduction of between 58% and 64% in total LIDs on the contralateral side was observed in both animals. No clear LID changes were observed on the ipsilateral side. These effects lasted the entire 3-month period in one monkey, but declined after 6-8 weeks in the other. The antiparkinsonian effects of levodopa did not diminish, The results of this pilot study indicate that fibroblast transplantation into the GPi may have beneficial effects on LIDs and warrant further investigation for potential therapeutic use.

Objective:To study the biocompatibility of F heparin surface modified IOLs (F HSM IOLs) and provide theoretical and experimental basis for clinical use and new IOL development. Methods The technique of carrier energy ion beam combined with low temperature and low pressure plasma was used to modify the surface of PMMA IOLs. The physicochemical and optical properties of F HSM IOLs were examined. In vitro, the cultured cells adherence and growth on IOLs were studied. In vivo, F HSM IOLs were implanted into rabbits and Rhesus monkeys eyes. The biocompatibility of F HSM IOLs, PMMA IOLs and HSM IOLs was compared. Results There were fewer adhered cells on the surface of F HSM IOLs with no toxicity to the cultured fibroblasts. F HSM IOLs caused less inflammatory reaction, broke BAB more slightly and decreased posterior capsular opacity. F HSM IOLs possessed better biocompatiblity. Our research also suggested that the brownish F HSM IOLs could prevent the short wave length light and ultraviolet rays from injuring the retina. Conclusion F HSM IOLs possessed better biocompatibility than conventional PMMA IOLs and can be used in clinical works after further inspection and approval.

The paper studied the imperatives of health psychologists in the control and management of HIV/ AIDS. HIV/AIDS is a relatively new disease, but has caused more deaths than any other disease in human history, and there is no known cure yet. Even though, HIV/AIDS is a death sentence, experts agreed that early detection, and early commencement of treatment may prolong the life of the patients, and that early detection may prevent or reduce the transmission of the virus. Early detection, commencement of treatment, and compliance with medical advice are the responsibilities of the health psychologist. This paper therefore, concludes that health psychologist is indispensable in effective control, and management of HIV/AIDS, and so recommends that awareness be created on the roles of health psychologists in this regard, through health education.
