Feng Zhi 冯至（1905-93） was not only one of the founders of German Studies in China, but he also was an important scholar of the Tang dynasty poet, Du Fu 杜甫（712-70）. The present essay attempts to analyze Feng Zhi＇s ＂coming of age＂ by using Du Fu as a case study for the dialogue between the modem and Western-educated intellectuals on the one hand, and the twentieth-century political and nativist movements of China on the other. Feng＇s admiration for Du Fu prompted him to write a biography for this precursor poet, this ＂Sage in Poetry＂（shisheng 诗圣）, which was not only a record of his life, but also a mirror that reflects Feng＇s own spiritual transformation from a student of Western romanticism, individualism, and existentialism, to, in his own words, a ＂mouthpiece of the people.＂

This article examines the intersection of law, gender, and modernity during the transitional Republican era （1912-49）. It approaches the topic through a critical reading of the Republican Civil Code of 1929-30, and related commentary on the code by Chinese legal experts. By analyzing the gender assumptions embodied in several newly emergent categories of legal regulation, including legal personhood, minimum marriage age, consent, domicile, surnames, marital property, and child custody, the article＇s line of questioning reveals how gender meanings helped to shape modem concepts like universality, equality, and freedom. The findings illustrate the ways in which Republican civil law broke with late imperial legal and gender norms tied to Confucian patrilineal ideology and in addition established new legal and gender meanings that helped to consolidate Chinese politics on a republican basis and to reconfigure modem gender difference on a conjugal basis.

The criticisms of the falsity of universal recognition carried| out by leftists, led by Karl Max, and the queries of its desirability proposed by rightists, represented by Friedrich Nietzsche, raise challenges to Francis Fukuyama’s theory of “the end of history” from two opposite directions. At present, Chinese-style political meritocracy based on the party state is a political form that combines these left-wing and right-wing challenges and has the potential to move beyond “the end of history”. However, whether it can truly surpass “the end of history” depends on whether it can form a desirable and stable alternative political form under modern conditions. To this end, Chinese-style political meritocracy must respond positively to the three challenges it faces under modern conditions: the tension between “debicheng- wei” (one’s virtue must have a matching position, 德必称位) and moral universal- ism, the corrosion of social justice from the hierarchical social structure caused by “weibichenglu” (one’s position must have a matching salary, 位必称禄), and the threat of social indoctrination to individual autonomy. The “introversive political meritocracy” jointly shaped by “advocating morals for the public,” “arete based on altruism,” and “introversive self-cultivation” is a desirable political form that can successfully respond to these three challenges.

In the modern era, the Jewish-Americans were faced with challenges because of the assimilation and modernity environment in the US, and as a result, many of them were in a double bind—to be an assimilated American citizen or to be a traditional Jew. With his work"The Imported Bridegroom", Abraham Cahan contemplated on the subject of Jewish immigration and assimilation and he made a ground-breaking contribution to the establishment of American modernity. This paper intends to analyze Cahan's attitudes towards assimilation and modernity and how he builds up modernity for all of the Americans. Three characters in"The Imported Bridegroom", who stand for three prototypes of modern Jewish-Americans confronting the overwhelming flood of assimilation and the duty for retaining their traditions, will be analyzed. Through the composition of this work, Cahan tried to spread the Jewish culture on the one hand, and on the other, he warned the peripheral that it was difficult to be assimilated without disasters even if they had made contribution to the formation of modernity.

The world we are confronting is full of kinds of contradictions and conflicts in spite of peace and development here and there. Concerning cross-cultural transmission which is in context of nation-to-nation perspective,the previous studies have probed into this issue in theoretical analysis and practical experience while the present situation still dissatisfies us,particularly when cultural differences are taken into account. Thus,it is of necessity to discuss how to make multicultural coexistence possible in the modern context. This paper,first of all,probes into characteristics of Chinese and western cultures,and then dwells on approaches applicable to address social and cultural problems under guidance of pluralism,ecologism and globalism. Under such circumstances,human civilization and integration could be achieved by filtering obstacles among different nations,cultures,ideologies,etc.,which tends to be evaluated by ecological and global vision in the modern era.

The French-Argentine Paul Groussac embodied a wide range of writerly functions and cultural-political positions within the Argentine cultural field between the 1880s and the 1920s:writer,playwright,chronicler,traveler,literary,art,and music critic,historian,educator,editor,and director of the National Library during 44 years.This essay considers his place in the history of Argentine literature looking at two of the many ways in which he inscribed himself in it The first takes up the production and reproduction of the ontological privilege of French identity as a form of legitimization for his public-and often polemic-interventions,through which he sought to establish scholarly-disciplinary practices,protocols,and conventions that would articulate an entire critical field around his own authority.The second proposes to think his alternatively weak and strong inscriptions in the literary tradition through his own narrative production:his fiction and dramaturgy,travelogues,and biographical sketches.In other words,this essay situates Groussac in an Argentine literary tradition(conceived as an organic and institutionally sanctioned textual corpus)he believed to have founded and established,a selfrepresentation that led Borges to say that Groussac saw himself as“a missionary of Voltaire among the mulattage.”

It has frequently been claimed that there is a lack of tragedy in the tradition of Chinese literature.The modern Chinese tragedy is very much the result of influence from the Western theatre.This essay examines Oscar Wilde’s tragedy Saloméas an example of the significant role that Western tragedy plays in the constructing of modern tragedy as an independent genre in China.Salomé,regarded as a tragedy in the Greek manner,with its inheritance of the tradition and elements of classical Greek tragedy in terms of setting,plot,morality,ending,and style,has enabled modern Chinese dramatists to establish connections with the tradition of Western tragedy.At the same time,Wilde’s rebellious protagonist has also given modern Chinese dramatists inspiration to retrieve femme fatales from traditional Chinese literature and transfigure them into the New Woman of the postMay Fourth era.With its iconoclastic spirit and aesthetic style,Saloméhas become a trope for Chinese modernity,which is linked closely with the anti-traditional consciousness and the drive to modernize Chinese theatre and literature for the building of a new China.Therefore,it is safe to say that the deep impact of Western tragedy on modern Chinese theatre would not have been possible without the mediation of Wilde’s Salomé,and that this is true especially for modern Chinese tragedy.
