modernity and Postmodernity： The Characteristics of Postmodern Cultural Media

From the academic frontier of modernity and postmodernity, the author aims at exploring the fission between modernity and postmodernity and also the characteristics of postmodern cultural media from a philosophical vantage point. This paper illustrates three aspects of Western modernity： individual modernity, social modernity, and instrumental modernity, and it also clarifies the issues in modernity, starting by explaining three forms of the cultural fission： avant-garde, modernism, and postmodemism. The paper then demonstrates that the rise of postmodemity represents a new transformation and new characteristics of contemporary Western spirit, namely, the collision and compatibility of various concepts, in which popular culture and high culture, mass culture and elite culture, fashion and games as well as noise and silence have constituted an uncanny landscape of cultural media. This eerie landscape displays the indeterminacy of language, culture, art, consciousness, and aesthetics. From the perspective of theoretical innovation, the author proposes that the postmodem cultural media always displays its commodity and instrumentality, plays and entertainment, anti-culture and anti-art, replication and fabrication logically and practically as an outcome of post-industrial society. In conclusion, three critical issues are addressed： personal spiritual belief, the development of mass culture, and aesthetic principles. The postmodern cultural media has deeply influenced traditional culture, aesthetics, and how they are evaluated, resulting in cultural conflicts and a humanistic dilemma in the world of contemporary capitalism.

Woman as the Trope:Perceiving the Altering Conceptions of Chinese modernity from Females’Posters before and during Mao’s Era

Woman as a political trope had been essential to the Chinese Communist Party’s state vision of socialist modernization after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.The Party valued women’s labor and devoted to emancipating it from the domestic realm so that women could be mobilized to actively participate in the collective socialist construction.Associating the figure of women with modernity is not an unprecedented strategy,for during the early twentieth century the“Modern Girl”embodying the essence of Chinese modernity had already become a conspicuous cultural icon in various kinds of visual cultural products.This paper investigates the ways in which females’public visual images were consciously constructed in the two different historical periods in order to cater to particular political or commercial schemes.It argues that while those images objectively capture the reality of social modernity to some extents,they also imply the artists’imaginary of an ideal vision of modernization.By registering female figures as the center for presentation,they were inscribed with males’desires through envisioning desirable female images that would correspond to their expectations of the concreteness of modernity.

The Rise of Women’s Education and the modernity of East Asia:Focusing on the Education of“Virtuous Wives and Worthy Mothers”in China and Japan

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan.Looking back on the past and forward to the future,we realize modernity has become a critical issue that not only China and Japan,but the whole East Asian region should pay attention to.China and Japan are both within the“Circle of Confucius Culture”and are both modern latecomer countries.As they were coerced by western countries to enter the modern age,they shared multiple common features.An exploration of the two countries’respective rising of modern women’s education is an important path to discuss the reconstruction of gender and an important method of the course of the embodiment of east-Asian women into modernization drives.With regards to conclusion,entering the modern age,Chinese and Japanese intellectuals reshaped the female gender in terms of interpersonal relationship,value system,and knowledge structure by advocating the idea of“virtuous wives and worthy mothers”education.In the concept of virtuous wives and worthy mothers in East Asia,the Confucian ethics of“docility and virtue”is the soul,and modern scientific knowledge serves this core value.On the other hand,in the course of localization in China and Japan,this imported concept from the West has encountered a completely different historical fate.

Rooted in Tradition, Embracing modernity： Zhou Zuoren＇s Interest in Modern Japanese Haiku and Tanka and His Promotion of Short Verse in China

When late Qing and early Republican-period Chinese reformers grappled with the challenges of creating a new poetic language and form in the early decades of the twentieth century, Zhou Zuoren （1885-1967）, one of modern China＇s most influential intellectuals, believed that much could be learned from the experiments of modern Japanese poets who had overcome similar challenges in the decades following the Meiji restoration. Of all the verse forms Japanese poets were experimenting with, Zhou was particularly interested in modern haiku and tanka. Zhou felt that the modern haiku and tanka＇s rootedness in tradition on the one hand and their ability to express modern sensibilities on the other could offer a model for Chinese poets seeking to create a poetic voice that was at once modern, but also anchored in traditional poetics. This article will analyze some of Zhou＇s translations of modern haiku and tanka and illustrate how these translations led him to promote a new poetic form in China, typically referred to as ＂short verse＂（xiaosh0. By further reading Zhou＇s critical essays on modern Japanese poetry against the writings of a number of Western modernist poets and translators who themselves were inspired by East Asian verse forms--Ezra Pound in particular--I will comment on the degree to which Zhou＇s promotion of short verse inspired by modern Japanese haiku and tanka challenges a perceived Western role in legitimizing East Asian forms as conducive to modernism.

The Public Role of the Social and Human Sciences After the Crisis of modernity

The current crisis of modernity has far-reaching implications for the public role of the social and human sciences.This crisis has made it clear that the central theoretical premises and concepts used by social scientists until now are not reflections of phenomena and processes which really exist,but components of the modern imaginary or discourse.As a consequence,social scientists5 ambition of being experts and guides of human practice has been seriously undermined and their social function should be completely reconsidered and redefined.From now on,the function of social scientists cannot be to provide people with an objective knowledge about reality.In a situation marked by the theoretical and epistemological disenchantment of modernity,their public role should be to help denaturalize and deconstruct any statement,practice,institution,or power relation with claims of being objectively founded.

The modernity of the Ancient-Style Verse

This article explores the stylistic innovations in the Ancient-Style Verse （gutishi 古体诗）, and particularly in the subgenre ofgexing 歌行, from the Late Qing to the 1930s and 1940s. It argues that the relative free prosody of the Ancient-Style allowed innovation disguised as restoration. Yet, instead of being the prelude to modem vernacular poetry, the innovations in this genre may have found an end in themselves--namely, creating a style of verse which showed a unique combination of modern elements and deliberate stylistic archaism. Its lyric archaism and innovation were formulated in dialectical terms, which have been frequently evoked in the reformative moments of the Chinese tradition. This paper examines the evolution of the new gexing style through the close reading of a few gexing poems by Huang Zunxian 黄道宪（1848-1905）, Liang Qichao 梁启超（1873-1929）, Lin Gengbai 林庚白（1896-1941）, and Liu Yazi 柳亚子（1887-1958）. Given the rise of vernacular poetry since 1917, the poems of Lin and Liu may be called the Classicist Verse, which represents the author＇s conscious choice to elaborate on the subject matter using a particular classical genre, when other modern genres are available. In the end, I will also discuss the gexing style verses by Li Sichun 李思纯 in the translation of multi-stanza European poetry, as a practice in accord to the indigenization agenda of the Critical Review magazine.

Everyday modernity in China:From Danwei to the"World Factory"

While modernity is often treated as an abstract and overwhelming phenomenon,growing attention has been paid to the everyday as an approach to the modem in recent years.This article examines everyday modernity in contemporary China through a comparative analysis of space and everyday life in the work unit{danyvei),a primary urban form during the socialist period,and the Foxconn factory,a representative example of China's"world factoryin the reform era.It shows change and continuity in everyday modernity at Chinese workplace in the context of the nation's economy shifting from one based on centrally planned heavy industry,with permanent employment and comprehensive social welfare for urban workers,to one that relies on export-oriented industries with the massive use of rural migrant workers.The study shows that both the work unit and the Foxconn factory complex feature the integral organization of workplace and crucial living facilities,but the driving forces behind this spatial arrangement and workers'everyday experience with the two types of workplace are quite different.

Transacting Memory in the Digital Age:modernity, Fluidity and Immateriality

The incessant flow of,content and data through digital platforms implicates humanity to immaterial modes of transacting identity and memory.Through the image of the "Napalm Girl"this paper traces the ways in which iconic images and memory can be remediated through social media platforms and algorithms.The re-contextualisation of history and memory through a technological gaze implicates us within new forms of vulnerabilities.By reviewing the politics of looking and watching online in digital platforms,the paper invites us to ponder over the flattening of memory and history through algorithms and a "digital morality"and "mortality"encoded through "user agreements"and "community standards".The repressing of this moral gaze weaves us into a social media economy where morality and ethics are refashioned through a viral economy where images are circulated, altered and reframed through digital technologies.The wider implications of this "virality"for humanity,memory making and historicity are explored.

The Solution to Current Psychosocial Problems and the “Unfulfilled Enlightenment” of modernity in the New Era

The transition period of Chinese society has spawned many psychosocial problems in China,which are characterized by high incidence,universality and growth. Compared with social and economic development,the devel-opment of social psychology has been relatively slow for a long time,which has led to the prevalence of psychosocial problems and the lack of modernity cultivation in China's modernization. Xi Jinping theory on socialism with Chi-nese characteristics(SCC) in the new era is a scientific plan for the all - round development and modernization of SCC,and it contains rich ideas of modernity. It is also the ideological inheritance and innovation of Marx's "full and free development of human beings",and the basic strategy of cultivating the modernity of the new era. Therefore,it is an important way to solve the current psychosocial problems in China through the Marxist theory and the "unfulfilled enlightenment" of the theory of the new era.

Marx’s Theory of World History Explained: Basic Connotations and Contemporary Context

Marx’s theory of world history is an important part of his materialist conception of history(i.e., historical materialism). Marx and Engels summarized the evolution of social history and the laws behind it based on their observations and analyses of human activities and their material conditions in real life and raised the realistic possibility of “transformation of history into world history” in the future. From the Marxist perspective of world history, we attempt to catch a glimpse of his profound, scientific criticism of capitalism and understand the contemporaneity and supercontemporaneity of Marxism. Also, we try to perceive new issues of our time and develop a new theory grounded in the scientific, rational, and universal insights from Marxism. The study of Marx’s theory of world history and criticism of capitalism can help understand today’s major issues such as globalization and anti-globalization. In short, Marx’s theory of world history is of profound theoretical and practical significance.
