Mechanism of progressive failure of a slope with a steep joint under the action of freezing and thawing:model test

The stability of slope rock masses is influenced by freeze-thaw cycles in cold region,and the mechanism of stability deterioration is not *** order to understand the damage and progressive failure characteristics of rock masses under the action of freezing and thawing,a model test was conducted on slope with steep joint in this *** temperature,frost heaving pressure and deformation of slope rock mass were monitored in real-time during the test and the progressive failure mode was *** experimental results show that the temperature variations of cracking and the rock mass of a slope are *** are obvious latent heat stages in the temperature-change plot in the crack,but not in the slope rock *** frost heaving effect in the fracture is closely related to the constraint conditions,which change with the deformation of the *** frost heaving pressure fluctuates periodically during freezing and continues to decrease during *** surface deformation of the rock mass increases during freezing,and the deformation is restored when it ***-thaw cycling results in residual deformation of the rock mass which cannot be fully *** shows that the rock mass at the free side of the steep-dip joint rotates slightly under the frost heaving effect,causing fracture *** fracture propagation pattern is a circular arc at the beginning,then extends to the possible sliding direction of the rock *** heaving force and fracture water pressure are the key factors for the failure of the slope,which can cause the crack to penetrate the rock mass,and a landslide ensues when the overall anti-sliding resistance of the rock mass is overcome.

Hydrocarbon accumulation characteristics of beachbar sandstones in the southern slope of the Dongying Sag, Jiyang Depression, Bohai Bay Basin, China

A number of beach-bar sandstone reservoir beds are developed in the upper fourth member of the Eocene Shahejie Formation （Es4s） on the southern slope of the Dongying *** on the analysis of seismic and logging data,with characterization and petrographic studies of core and cutting samples,this paper analyzes the hydrocarbon accumulation characteristics in two typical blocks of the Boxing and Wangjiagang oilfields,especially reservoir bed heterogeneity and migration conditions that influence oil and gas distribution,calculates the index of reservoir bed quality （IRQ） with a mathematical method,and discusses the relationship between driving force and resistance of hydrocarbon *** into account the characteristics of thin interbeds in beach-bar sandstones,an experimental model simulated the characteristics of hydrocarbon migration and accumulation in thin interbedded sandstones with reservoir bed *** results showed that hydrocarbon distribution and properties were extremely *** bed and migration conditions controlled hydrocarbon accumulation in beach-bar *** is above 0.4 in the main hydrocarbon *** body distribution,structural configuration and fault systems controlled the direction of regional migration and location of hydrocarbon *** experiments indicated that the change of driving force for hydrocarbon migration affected selective accumulation *** moved vertically along fault zones to the reservoir and resulted in the distribution of hydrocarbon in the *** kinds of hydrocarbon accumulation models exist in the study *** is a hydrocarbon accumulation model controlled by reservoir bed heterogeneity and the second is a hydrocarbon accumulation model controlled by a complex migration system with faults connecting ***,different exploration strategies should be adopted for the detailed exploration for beach-bar sandstone reservoirs acc

experimental Study on Free Spanning Submarine Pipeline Under Dynamic Excitation

Seismic load has a significant effect on the response of a free spanning submarine pipeline when the pipeline is constructed in a seismically active region. The model experiment is performed on an underwater shaking table to simulate the response of submarine pipelines under dynamic input. In consideration of the effects of the terrestrial and submarine pipeline, water depth, support condition, distance from seabed, empty and full pipeline, and span on dynamic response, 120 groups of experiments are conducted. Affecting factors are analyzed and conclusions are drawn for reference. For the control of dynamic response, the span of a submarine pipeline is by far more important than the other factors. Meanwhile, the rosponse difference between a submarine pipeline under sine excitation and that under random excitation exists in experiments.

A Simplified Numerical Approach for the Prediction of Rainfall-Induced Retrogressive Landslides

Retrogressive landslides are common geological phenomena in mountainous areas and on onshore and offshore slopes. The impact of retrogressive landslides is different from that of other landslide types due to the phenomenon of retrogression. The hazards caused by retrogressive landslides may be increased because retrogressive landslides usually affect housing, facilities, and infrastructure located far from the original slopes. Additionally, substantial geomorphic evidence shows that the abundant supply of loose sediment in the source area of a debris flow is usually provided by retrogressive landslides that are triggered by the undercutting of water. Moreover, according to historic case studies, some large landslides are the evolution result of retrogressive landslides. Hence the ability to understand and predict the evolution of retrogressive landslides is crucial for the purpose of hazard mitigation. This paper discusses the phenomenon of a retrogressive landslide by using a model experiment and suggests a reasonably simplified numerical approach for the prediction of rainfall-induced retrogressive landslides. The simplified numerical approach, which combines the finite element method for seepage analysis, the shear strength reduction finite element method, and the analysis criterion for the retrogression and accumulation effect, is presented and used to predict the characteristics of a retrogressive landslide. The results show that this numerical approach is capable of reasonably predicting the characteristics of retrogressive landslides under rainfall infiltration, particularly the magnitude of each landslide, the position of the slip surface, and the development processes of the retrogressive landslide. Therefore, this approach is expected to be a practical method for the mitigation of damage caused by rainfall-induced retrogressive landslides.

Detecting Primary Precursors of January Surface Air Temperature Anomalies in China

This study aims to detect the primary precursors and impact mechanisms for January surface temperature anomaly （JSTA） events in China against the background of global warming, by comparing the causes of two extreme JSTA events occurring in 2008 and 2011 with the common mechanisms inferred from all typical episodes during 1979- 2008. The results show that these two extreme events exhibit atmospheric circulation patterns in the mid-high latitudes of Eurasia, with a positive anomaly center over the Ural Mountains and a negative one to the south of Lake Baikal （UMLB）, which is a pattern quite similar to that for all the typical events. However, the Eurasian teleconnection patterns in the 2011 event, which are accompanied by a negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation, are different to those of the typical events and the 2008 event. We further find that a common anomalous signal appearing in early summer over the tropical Indian Ocean may be responsible for the following late-winter Eurasian teleeonnec- lions and the associated JSTA events in China. We show that sea surface temperature anomalies （SSTAs） in the preceding summer over the western Indian Ocean （WIO） are intimately related to the UMLB-like circulation pattern in the following January. Positive WIOSSTAs in early summer tend to induce strong UMLB-like circulation anomalies in January, which may result in anomalously or extremely cold events in China, which can also be successfully reproduced in model experiments. Our results suggest that the WIOSSTAs may be a useful precursor for predicting JSTA events in China.

The Numerical Simulation of a Towing Cylinder Based on Immersed Body Boundary Method

An immersed body boundary method is adopted to track the motions of a towing cylinder, and a homogenous multiphase Eulerian-Eulerian fluid approach is used to capture the free surface. The Reynolds average Navier-Stockes(RANS) solver is applied to all gird nodes to deal with different velocities of the nodes that are in the body boundary, near the boundary and out of the boundary and their effect on the fluid. The towing cylinder resistance at different submerged depths in the tank is presented. The simulation results are compared with the experimental data, and the method is verified and validated. Finally, the hydrodynamic characters of the cylinder are discussed further. The numerical and experimental results show that at high speeds, the deeper the cylinder submerges, the lower resistance it suffers. The resistance coefficient trough is obtained at Froude number in the range of 0.3 < F r < 0.4. These phenomena can provide some suggestions on the small waterplane area twin hull(SWATH) design.

Vibration Control of Jacket Platforms with Magnetorheological Damper and experimental Validation~

Magnetorheological （MR） dampers have been proposed to control the vibration of offshore platforms in this paper. The semi-active control strategy based on fuzzy control algorithm was adopted to determine the optimal output control force based on the responses of jacket platforms. A typical jacket platform in Mexico Gulf was selected as the numerical example to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed control method. Furthermore, a model experiment was performed to validate the results of the numerical simulation. The experimental model of the jacket platform was designed based on dynamical similarity criterion by the scale of 1：50. Both of the numerical and experimental results show that the semi-active control system with the MR damper can reduce vibrations of jacket platforms effectively and at the same time the control effect is stable.

Four-Degree-of-Freedom Course Stability of an Air Cushion Vehicle

A four-degree-of-freedom mathematical model was established to investigate the course stability of an air cushion vehicle (ACV). The forces of aerodynamic,propeller and rudder were obtained by wind tunnel experiments. A series of constrained model experiments with horizontal-planar-motion-mechanism (HPMM) were conducted to determine the hydrodynamics. The ACV's course stability was analyzed by using Hurwitz deter-mination method with differential equation of perturbation,and the four-degree-of-freedom course stability was then checked by simulated calculation. The analysis and simulation results show that the course stability of fourdegree-of-freedom is applicable to ACV and is stricter than that of two-degree-of-freedom.

Wave Forces and Moments on a Gravity Pier Foundation

In order to understand the wave forces and moments on a gravity pier foundation which consists of an upper column and a bottom gravity base,a model experiment with a scale of 1:60 has been conducted in a laboratory flume.A corresponding numerical calculation by using the boundary element method has been carried out to provide a comparative *** is shown by the comparisons that the numerical wave forces and moments agree well with the experimental *** is proved that the wave forces and moments acting on the foundation are completely in their inertia dominative areas for wave *** the diffraction effects considered into the inertia item,appropriate inertia coefficients are assessed by the experimental results for the inertia item of the Morison *** formula of the inertia item can be used to estimate wave forces and moments on such gravity foundations.
