Characteristics of the lower layer of sandstorms in the minqin desert-oasis zone

By measuring the sand-dust flux,vertical deposition,and the wind velocity throughout 19 sandstorms in the minqin region,we quantitatively analyzed the horizontal distribution and vertical variation in sandstorm characteristics under different land cover *** effect of different land cover on mitigating sandstorms was also *** results indicated that,in the surface layer ranging from 0-50 m,the intensity of sand-dust horizontal flux and concentration of sand-dust decreased with the increase of the height in the desert and the edge of oasis,whereas the two physical quantities increased slightly with the increase of the height in the *** two physical quantities obey power function well under all three cover ***,in the desert and at the edge of oasis,the sand-dust vertical deposition decreased with the increase of the *** a partial unimodal distribution at the oasis site and the maximum deposition occurred at the height of 9 m,which corresponds to the middle height of farmland protection *** annual flux that passed through a section of 1 m in width and 50 m in height was 9169 kg in the desert,5318 kg at the edge of oasis,and 2345 kg in the *** the annual fluxes at the edge of oasis and in the oasis are 42% and 74% less,respectively,than that in the *** implies that the wind break forest significantly reduced the intensity of sandstorms.

Application scope of geostatistics has been gradually extended from original geologic field to soil science and ecological field, etc. and its successful application results have been widely demonstrated. But little information is reported as to the direct use of geostatistical method to work out the distribu- tion map of groundwater characteristics. In this paper the semivariogram of geostatistics, in combina- tion with GIS, was used to quantitatively study the spatial variation characteristics of groundwater table depth and mineralization degree and their relation to the landuse changes. F test of the used spherical model reached a very significant level, and the theoretical model can well reflect the spatial structural characteristics of groundwater table depth and mineralization degree and achieve an ideal result. This shows that the application of the method in the dynamical simulation of groundwater is feasible. And this paper also provides useful reference for the application of geostatistics in the study of the dy- namical variations of groundwater resources in the oasis.

This paper analyzed the data of temperature and precipitation in minqin,typical desert area in north-west China,during the period of 1961 2007 by linear *** result indicated that the increasing rate of the mean annual temperature in minqin was higher than that of the average of China;and the temperature in February increased by 3.01oC averagely in the past 47 *** climate in minqin displayed an evident warming ***,there was no evidently increasing trend of precipitation in the past 47 years,and drought occurred during the whole growing season.

Differences in response of desert plants of different ecotypes to climate warming:a case study in minqin, Northwest China

Globally climates are warming. How do desert plants of different ecotypes respond to the climate change？ This paper studied the differing responses to climate warming shown by desert plants of different ecotypes through analyzing the phenology and meteorological data of 22 desert plant species growing in minqin Desert Bo- tanical Garden in Northwest China during the period 1974-2009. The results indicate：（1） The temperature in the study area has risen quickly since 1974, and plants＇ growing periods became longer. The spring phenology of mesophytes advanced, and the autumn phenology of xerophytes was delayed; （2） The starting dates of spring phenophase of mesophytes and xerophytes differed significantly and both showed an advancing trend; （3） The spring phenology of mesophytes advanced by more days than that of xerophytes, whereas the autumn phenology of mesophytes was delayed by less days than that of the xerophytes; and （4） Mesophytes are more sensitive than xerophytes to rising temperature in spring and falling temperature in autumn. These findings are of value in plant management and regional introduction of different species.

Photosynthetic Physiological Response to Drought Stress of Populus euphratica at Different Ages in minqin

[Objectives]This study was conducted to investigate the photosynthetic physiological characteristics of Populus euphratica trees at different forest ages in the desert area of minqin in response to drought stress.[Methods]With *** trees of different ages in minqin as the research object,the water characteristics and photosynthetic physiological indexes(chlorophyll,soluble sugar,POD,SOD and MDA)were compared under different conditions.[Results]On the time gradient,the soil water contents of *** of different ages decreased continuously with the extension of irrigation stop time,but the decreases were *** the same stress treatment,the soil water contents of *** of different ages increased with the deepening of soil layer,but the differences were not significant(P>0.05).Under normal condition,the chlorophyll contents of *** at three ages gradually increased with the increase of *** chlorophyll contents in leaves of *** at different ages were all lower under normal condition and higher under water *** changes of POD and SOD activity in leaves of *** at different ages under different conditions were basically the same,showing that the enzyme activity was higher under water stress than under normal *** MDA contents in leaves of the young and middle *** forests were higher under water stress at 7 and 21 d than under normal condition,and the differences were not significant(P>0.05);and the MDA content in leaves of the mature *** forest was higher under water stress at 21 and 35 d than under normal *** stress has a certain effect on the photosynthetic physiological characteristics of *** summary,under drought stress,the chlorophyll content,SOD and POD activity,and MDA molar concentration in the leaves of *** were basically higher than under normal condition,indicating that *** could resist drought environment through osmotic adjustment a

Global Warming:Increases in the Instability of Climate in minqin Desert Area

The instability of climate in minqin desert area during the process of global warming was analyzed based on meteorological data during 1961-2013. The results show that the instability of monthly average temperature in January and April increased. Isothermal date in February was 10.36 d earlier from 1961 to 2013. The instability of extreme maximum temperature in December and January enhanced. The instability of extreme minimum temperature in July increased. The coefficient of variation of extreme minimum temperature in May was up to 287.3%. The instability of average precipitation in January enhanced. At the same time,the stability of annual average precipitation increased. The stability of climate is more worthy of attention.

Health Sequence of Plant Community of Sand-accumulation Belt at the Upwind Edge of minqin Oasis

A sand-accumulation belt came into being during the process of desert control in recent 60 years at the edge of oasis,especially at the upwind places in desert area in Hexi Corridor of *** them,the sand-accumulation belt at the edge of minqin Oasis is relatively typical and the most *** vegetation on the sand-accumulation belt is not only the formation factor of the sand-accumulation belt,but also an important factor to maintain the stability of the sand-accumulation *** a certain sense,the health status of the vegetation of the sand-accumulation belt determines the stability of the sand-accumulation *** order to analyze the vegetation status of the sand-accumulation belt,the health sequence analysis of the plant community was carried out of sand-accumulation belt at the edge of minqin Oasis,by setting 11 lines of equal spacing of sand-accumulation belt at the edge of minqin Oasis,and through the vegetation survey of more than 60 *** vegetation on the sand-accumulation belt at the edge of minqin Oasis is generally *** for the health sequence of this study,the health status of vegetation of the sand-accumulation belt formed by artificial sand fixation forest is better than that of vegetation of the sand-accumulation belt formed by natural shrub at the edge of minqin *** health status of vegetation of the sand-accumulation belt of mixed forest of arbor and shrub is the worst at the edge of minqin *** dominant species Tamarix laxa on the sand-accumulation belt in the lower reaches of the oasis are seriously withered,and their health is the *** is potential danger of the sand-accumulation belt being blown and *** abandonment of farmland,protection of protection forest and sand-accumulation belt at the edge of farmland in sand area is a new problem,which is worth considering.

Comparative Analysis of Wind break and Sand fixation Functions of Several Main Forage Plants in minqin Desert Area

[Objective] The paper was to study wind-break and sand-fixation functions of forage plants in desert area. [Method]Based on the survey data of four major wind-break and sand-fixation plants( Haloxylon ammondendron,Artemisia arenaria,Nitraria tangutorum and Ephedra przewalskii) in minqin desert area,the longitudinal section area and the sandpile volume of an individual plant and per unit area were calculated. The wind-break and sand-fixation functions of four major plant communities were comparatively analyzed. [Result] The wind-break functions of an individual plant( cluster) successively were N. tangutorum > H. ammondendron > A. arenaria and E. przewalskii; the sand-fixation functions of an individual plant( cluster) successively were N. tangutorum > E. przewalskii; the wind-break functions per unit area successively were A. arenaria > H. ammondendron > N. tangutorum > E. przewalskii; the sand-fixation functions per unit area were N. tangutorum > E. przewalskii; the wind-break and sand-fixation function per unit area were N. tangutorum > A. arenaria > H. ammondendron >E. przewalskii.[Conclusion]A. arenaria can be selected for only wind-break,and N. tangutorum can be chosen for only sand-fixation. If given consideration to both,N. tangutorum and A. arenaria must be selected.

Research on Stability of Desert Climate of minqin County in Gansu Province

In order to study the stability of desert climate, the instability of climate in minqin desert in response to global warming during 1961-2013 was analyzed by sliding standard deviation and a linear trend line. The results show that the instabili- ty of average temperature in January and April increased, and the isothermal date in February was 10.36 d earlier from 1961 to 2013. The instability of extreme maxi- mum temperature in December and January improved. The instability of extreme minimum temperature in July instability also increased. The coefficient of variation of extreme minimum temperature in May was up to 287.3%. It is concluded that the instability of desert climate of minqin County increased with global warming. The stability of climate is more worthy of attention.

Desert vegetation distribution and species-environment relationships in an oasis-desert ecotone of northwestern China

Environmental heterogeneity significantly affects the structure of ecological *** vegetation distribution and its relationship with environmental factors is essential to understanding the abiotic mechanism(s)driving vegetation succession,especially in the ecologically fragile *** this study,based on the quantitative analysis of plant community and environmental factors in 68 plots at 10 different transects in the minqin oasis-desert ecotone(ODE)of northwestern China,we investigated desert vegetation distribution and species-environment relationships using multivariate ***-way indicator species analysis(TWINSPAN),detrended correspondence analysis(DCA),and canonical correspondence analysis(CCA)methods were used.A total of 28 species,belonging to 27 genera in 8 families,were ***,Zygophyllaceae,Gramineae,and Leguminosae were the largest *** and perennial herbs accounted for 28.60%of the total number of plants,while shrubs(42.90%)were the most *** tangutorum was the constructive species of the desert plant *** divided the 68 plots surveyed in this study into 7 community types,according to the results of *** distribution of these 7 communities in the DCA ordination graph showed that species with a similar ecotype were clustered *** of CCA indicated that groundwater was the dominant factor influencing vegetation distribution,while distance between plot and oasis(Dis)and soil electrical conductivity(EC)were the local second-order *** study suggests that optimizing the utilization of groundwater in oases is key to controlling the degradation of desert *** favorable topographic conditions of sand dunes should be fully utilized for vegetal dune stabilization,and the influence of soil salinity on the selection of afforestation tree species should be considered.
