Singularity of lithosphere mass density over the mid-ocean ridges and implication on floor depth and heat flow

The relation of heat flow and floor depth across the mid-ocean ridges versus lithosphere age can be described by linear functions of square root of age according to plate thermal conductive Half Space Models(HSM).However,one of the long-standing problems of these classical models is the discrepancies between predicted and observed heat flow and floor depth for very young and very old *** have been several recent attempts to overcome this problem:one model incorporates temperature-and pressure-dependent parameters and the second model includes an additional low-conductivity crustal layer or magma rich mantle layer(MRM).Alternatively,in the current paper,the ordinary density of lithosphere in the plate conductive models is substituted with a reduction of lithosphere density towards axis that features the irregularity and nonlinearity of plates across the mid-ocean ridges.A new model is formulated incorporating the new form of density for predicting both peak heat flow and floor *** solutions of power-law forms derived from the model can significantly improve the predicting results of heat flow and floor depth over the mid-ocean *** datasets in the literature were reutilized for model validation and *** datasets include both earlier datasets used for original model calibration and the more recently compiled high-quality datasets with both sedimentary and crustal loading *** results indicate that both the heat flow and the slope(first orderderivative)of sea floor approach infinity(undifferentiability or singularities)around the mid-ocean *** singularities are partially due to the boundary condition as it has been already known in the literature and partially to the reduction of density of lithosphere as discovered for the first time in the current research.

Recent progress in submarine geosciences in China

In China submarine geosciences represents a newly established discipline of oceanography, focusing on the oceanic lithosphere, and its interface with the hydrosphere and biosphere. Recently, supported by the National High Technology Research and Development Program and other high-tech development projects, significant progress has been made in the development of advanced technologies and equipment. This en- ables the scientists in China to carry out explorations of the international seabed area in the Pacific ocean and on the Southwest Indian Ridge. In addition, they have been active in the research activities associated the mid-ocean ridges and western Pacific marginal seas. It is anticipated that this research field will continue to be highly fruitful in the near future.

Fractal Calculus and Analysis for Characterizing Geoanomalies Caused by Singular Geological Processes

Integral and differentiation are two mathematical operations in modern calculus and analysis which have been commonly applied in many fields of *** and differentiation are associated and linked as inverse operation by the fundamental theorem of *** integral and differentiation are defined based on the concept of additive Lebesgue measure although various generations have been developed with different forms and *** can be considered as geometry with fractal dimension(e.g.,non-integer)which no longer possesses Lebesgue additive ***,the ordinary integral and differentiation operations are no longer applicable to the fractal geometry with *** paper introduces a recently developed concept of fractal differentiation and integral *** operations are expressed using the similar notations of the ordinary operations except the measures are defined in fractal space or measures with fractal *** calculus operations can be used to describe the new concept of fractal density,the density with fractal dimension or density of matter with fractal *** concept and methods are also applied to interpret the Bouguer anomaly over the mid-ocean *** results show that the Bouguer gravity anomaly depicts singularity over the mid-ocean *** development of new calculus operations can significantly improve the accuracy of geodynamic models.

Seafloor Asymmetry in the Atlantic ocean

Measurements of seafloor asymmetry at about 360 000 pairs of conjugate points along 1250 profiles across the mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) provide new constraints on models for the upwelling of the buoyant asthenosphere. The sign and amplitude of the asymmetry vary systematically and are functions of the distance between the spreading center and the location of the inferred location of maximum regional buoyancy (LMRB) in the asthenosphere. The LMRB is a smooth line derived from the observed asymmetry and is more centered at the regional topographic high than the spreading center. These observations are best explained by active upwelling of the underlying buoyant asthenosphere rather than by pressure-release melting.

Sulfide Aggregation in Ophiolitic Dunite Channels Explains Os-Isotope Mismatch between oceanic Crust and Mantle

The osmium-isotope mismatch commonly reported between mid-ocean-ridge basalts(MORBs) and residual mantle might reflect evolution of the MORB Re-Os system after extraction from the asthenosphere, or preferential contribution of radiogenic Os components from mantle. However, in a MOR system, the role of dunite melt channels from the upper mantle and Moho transition zone in regulating isotopic systems between mantle and crust has rarely been evaluated. We report new Re-Os isotopic compositions of base-metal sulfides(BMS), chromites and dunites from dunite lenses with low spinel Cr# [Cr3+/(Cr3++Al3+) ≤ 0.66](products of interaction between MORB-like melts and upper-mantle harzburgites) from the Zedang ophiolite(South Tibet). Re-Os isotopic compositions of low-Cr# dunites from the Oman ophiolite are also shown for comparison. Mineralogical evidence suggests that the Zedang sulfides were originally precipitated as monosulfide solid solutions. The highly variable 187Os/188Os initial ratios(0.1191-0.1702) and low 187Re/188Os(mid-ocean ridges. Formation of dunite channels in the upper mantle thus can aggregate Os-bearing sulfides with chromite, leaving high Re/Os components into the residual melts.
