Excavation-induced microseismicity and rockburst occurrence:Similarities and differences between deep parallel tunnels with alternating soft-hard strata

Excavation-induced microseismicity and rockburst occurrence in deep underground projects provide invaluable information that can be used to warn rockburst occurrence,facilitate rockburst mitigation procedures,and analyze the mechanisms responsible for their *** on the deep parallel tunnels with the maximum depth of 1890 m created as part of the Neelum–Jhelum hydropower project in Pakistan,similarities and differences on excavation-induced microseismicity and rockburst occurrence between parallel tunnels with soft and hard alternant strata are *** show that a large number of microseismic(MS)events occurred in each of the parallel tunnels during *** occurred most frequently in certain local sections of the two *** differences are found in the excavation-induced microseismicity(spatial distribution and number of MS events,distribution of MS energy,and pattern of microseismicity variation)and rockbursts characteristics(the number and the spatial distribution)between the parallel *** to predict the microseismicity and rockburst intensities likely to be encountered in subsequent tunnel based on the activity encountered when the parallel tunnel was previously excavated will not be an easy or accurate procedure in deep tunnel projects involving complex lithological conditions.

Application of a microseismic monitoring system in deep mining

A microseismic monitoring system was used in the Donggua Shan underground copper mine, and its application was introduced. The spacial distribution of the seismic event was monitored effectively during mining with this system. The distribution of the seismic intensity in different time periods and in the different mining districts was obtained via the clustering analysis of the monitored results, and the different intensity concentration districts of seismicity were compartmentalized. The various characteristics and waveforms of different vibrations in the underground mine were revealed with the help of the micro-seismic monitoring system. It was proved that the construction and application of the micro-seismic monitoring system in the mine not only realized the continuous monitoring of seismicity in the deep mine, but also settled an this system.

Laboratory study of fracture initiation and propagation in Barre granite under fluid pressure at stress state close to failure

Hydraulic fracturing is frequently used to increase the permeability of rock formations in energy extraction scenarios such as unconventional oil and gas extraction and enhanced geothermal systems(EGSs).The present study addresses uncertainties in the hydraulic fracturing process pertaining to EGSs in crystalline rock such as ***,there is debate in the literature on the mechanisms(*** and/or shear)by which these fractures initiate,propagate,and *** present experiments on Barre granite with pre-cut flaws where the material is loaded to high far-field stresses close to shear failure,and then the fluid pressure in the flaws is increased to move the Mohr’s circle to the left and observe the initiation and propagation of fractures using high-speed imaging and acoustic emissions(AEs).We find that the hydraulic fractures initiate as tensile microcracks at the flaw tips,and then propagate as a combination of tensile and shear *** focal mechanisms also show elevated levels of tensional microfracturing near the flaw tips during pressurization and final *** then consider a numerical model of the experimental setup,where we find that fractures are indeed likely to initiate at flaw tips in tension even at relatively high far-field stresses of 40 MPa where shear failure is generally expected.

Recent Development in Numerical Simulation of Enhanced Geothermal Reservoirs

This paper briefly introduces the current state in computer modelling of geothermal reservoir system and then focuses on our research efforts in high performance simulation of enhanced geothermal reservoir system. A novel supercomputer simulation tool has been developing towards simulating the highly non-linear coupled geomechanical-fiuid flow-thermal systems involving heterogeneously fractured geomaterials at different spatial and temporal scales. It is applied here to simulate and visualise the enhanced geothermal system （EGS）, such as （1） visualisation of the microseismic events to monitor and determine where/how the underground rupture proceeds during a hydraulic stimulation, to generate the mesh using the recorded data for determining the domain of the ruptured zone and to evaluate the material parameters （i.e., the permeability） for the further numerical analysis and evaluation of the enhanced geothermal reservoir; （2） converting the avail- able fractured rock image/fracture data as well as the reservoir geological geometry to suitable meshes/grids and further simulating the fluid flow in the complicated fractures involving the detailed description of fracture dimension and geometry by the lattice Boltzmann method and/or finite element method; （3） interacting fault system simulation to determine the relevant complicated rup- ture process for evaluating the geological setting and the in-situ reservoir properties; （4） coupled thermo-fluid flow analysis of a geothermal reservoir system for an optimised geothermal reservoir design and management. A few of application examples are presented to show its usefulness in simulating the enhanced geothermal reservoir system.

A wavelet transform method for studying the energy distribution characteristics of microseismicities associated rock failure

microseismicity signals released during rock failure process are firstly recorded using microseismicity monitoring system.A wavelet transform scheme is then developed on the basis of the discrete wavelet transform and implemented into MATLAB to study the energy distribution characteristics of the monitored microseismicity *** wavelet transform scheme decomposes the recorded microseismicity signals into various wavelets at seven scales and eight frequency *** microseismicity energy at each frequency band is then calculated by integrating the wavelets in each *** is found that,for the microseismicity signals recorded during the uniaxial loading of the granite,the microseismicity energies are mainly distributed between the bands 7.8125-15.625 kHz,15.625-31.250 kHz and 31.25-62.5 kHz and the percentages of the released energies at these frequency bands are 8.24%,62.72%,28.08% of the total energies,*** results reveal that the microseismicity energies at these levels are directly related to the damage mechanisms of the granite although further studies are need to identify the failure *** these monitored signals were processed using wavelet transformation to find out the frequency distribution rule and the frequency band energy varying rule of the acoustic emission(AE) signals during the different rock damage and failure *** rock failure mechanism was interpreted from the perspective of the relationship between AE signal frequency change and crack *** frequency band energy distribution histograms of the microseismicity signals at different damage stages were computed and drawn by the energy calculation method of wavelet transformation implemented into *** energy percentage of the low frequency band(d7-a7) and that of the dominated frequency band(d4-d6) and their variation rule were analyzed ***,the critical damage point is that the low frequency energy percentage is above a certain threshol

Focal mechanism caused by fracture or burst of a coal pillar

As a regional, real-time and dynamic method, microseismic monitoring technology is quite an appropriate technology for forecasting geological hazards, such as rock bursts, mine tremors, coal and gas outbursts and can even be used to prevent or at least reduce these disasters. The study of the focal mechanisms of different seismic sources is the prerequisite and basis for forecasting rock burst by microseismic monitoring technology. Based on the analysis on the mechanism and fracture course of coal pillars where rock bursts occur mostly, the equivalent point source model of the seismicity caused by a coal pillar was created. Given the model, the seismic displacement equation of a coal pillar was analyzed and the seismic mechanism was pointed out by seismic wave theory. The course of the fracture of the coal pillar was simulated closely in the laboratory and the equivalent microseismic signals of the fractures of the coal pillar were acquired using a TDS-6 experimental system. The results show that, by the pressure and friction of a medium near the seismic source, both a compression wave and a shear wave will be emitted and shear fracture will be induced at the moment of breakage. The results can be used to provide an academic basis to forecast and prevent rock bursts or tremors in a coal pillar.

Reservoir construction from the Newberry Volcano EGS Demonstration

The Newberry Volcano EGS Demonstration in central Oregon tests recent technological advances designed to reduce the cost of power generated by EGS in a hot,dry well(NWG 55-29) drilled in 2008. An EGS reservoir was created by injecting large volumes of cold water,causing existing fractures to slip in shear(known as hydroshearing) generating the seismic waves that can be used to map fracture location and size. At the Newberry Demonstration the final injectivity ranged between 1.4 and 1.7 L/s/MPa a ~6x improvement over the initial injectivity of the well. The injectivity improvement and seismic analysis indicate that previously impermeable fractures were enhanced during the NWG 55-29 stimulation.

Active Deformations at the Churachandpur Mao Fault (CMF) in Indo Burma Ranges: Multidisciplinary Evidences

Northeastern part of the Indian subcontinent is seismically active region with excessive rainfall and frequent landslides, which cause disruption of the road networks for couple of months in every year. The region has a typical morphotectonic setup where many active thrusts and faults have affected the landforms as well as the major part of the terrain. A prominent creeping strike-slip fault, named Chrachandpur Mao Fault (CMF), trending NS, is one of the triggering factors for frequent landslides, creeping low magnitude earthquakes. The life line of Manipur, national high way NH39 traverses through this fault in Manipur, hence the traffic is disrupted during the monsoon season. Based on the GPS campaign mode studies on western and eastern sides of the CMF, it is observed that there is a change in the crustal velocities from 16 - 22 mm/yr in east to 33 - 42 mm/yr in the west. Micro-deformations are also observed;the displacements along the vertical, N-S and E-W components are –0.111 mm/yr (downward), 0.03 mm/yr (north) and –0.011 mm/yr (west). The net displacement is 0.126 mm/yr with an azimuth of N 85? and dipping 13? towards west. Neotectonic development along the CMF with the GPS measurements suggest an aseismic nature of the fault with dextral component. Fault plane solutions of the earthquakes show northerly directed principal Paxis indicating the extension (T-axis) along eastwest. The resulting creeping of micro-deformation towards the western slopes of the terrain is aligned with the principal Taxis. The creeping triggers the microseismicity as well as the landslides along the CMF.
