Summary What is already known about this topic?Metabolic syndrome(MetS)is one of the most easily available health indicative markers for cardiovascular diseases,and it has become a major public health problem worldwide due to increasing urbanization and aging populations.The prevalence of MetS increased dramatically in China,however,there are no records of MetS defined by the 2017 Chinese Diabetes Society for Beijing by far.What is added by this report?In this study,the data of 24,412 participants aged 18–74 years from a large population-based study in Beijing was collected.The overall prevalence of MetS among Beijing residents was 24.5%.The prevalence was 35.2%in males and 15.4%in females.What are the implications for public health practice?Effective public health strategies should target males,people with older age,lower education,higher body mass index,smokers,those who drink alcohol,those who are unemployed or retired,and those who live in rural areas on MetS prevention and control.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)is known for its insidious onset and chronic nature,which have jeopardized the health and life of 29.2%of adults in China[1].In 2020,Metabolic dysfunctionassociated fatty liver disease(MAFLD),a more accurate nomenclature to replace NAFLD,was put forward in an international consensus of experts involving 22 countries[2].In China,at least 300 million people will suffer from MAFLD by 2030,which will be a heavy burden on national health[3].

Alterations in plant metabolism play a key role in the complex plant-pathogen interactions.However,there is still a lack of knowledge about the connection between changes in primary and specialized metabolism and the plant defense against diseases that impact crops.Thus,we aim to study the Metabolic reprograming in Brassica oleracea plants upon infection by Xanthomonas campestris pv.campestris(Xcc).To accomplish this,we utilized a combination of untargeted and targeted metabolomics,through UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS and 1H-NMR,in two crop lines differing in resistance thatwere evaluated at two-and four-week intervals following inoculation(T1 and T2,respectively).Besides,to depict the physiological status of the plant during infection,enzymatic activities related to the carbohydrate pathway and oxidative stress were studied.Our results revealed different temporal dynamics in the responses of the susceptible vs.resistant crops lines.Resistant B.oleracea line suppresses carbohydrate metabolism contributing to limit nutrient supplies to the bacterium and prioritizes the induction of defensive compounds such as indolic glucosinolates,salicylic acid,phenylpropanoids and phytoalexins precursors at early infection stages.In contrast,the susceptible line invests in carbohydratemetabolism,including enzymatic activities related to the hexoses turnover,and activates defense signaling related to reactive oxygen species.Thus,each line triggers a different Metabolic strategy that will affect how the plant overcomes the disease in terms of resistance and growth.This work provides first insights of a fine-tuned Metabolic regulation during Xcc infection in B.oleracea that will contribute to develop new strategies for plant disease management.

Objective This study aims to assess the dose-response relationship between serum ferritin(SF)and Metabolic syndrome(MetS)in the two sexes.Methods We searched for articles on PubMed,the Cochrane Library,EMBASE,and the Web of Science databases that were published from 1950 to 2020.The summary odds ratio(OR)and 95%confidence interval(CI)of the association between SF and MetS were estimated using a random-effects model through a meta-analysis.Based on the methods described by Greenland and Longnecker,we explored the dose-response relationship between the two sexes.Results This study included 14 studies and 74,710 samples.The results of the classical meta-analysis showed that SF was positively associated with MetS(OR=1.77,95%CI:1.59–1.98).Regarding the components of MetS(8 studies included),the results showed that SF was positively associated with abdominal obesity(OR=1.42,95%CI:1.24–1.62),elevated fasting plasma glucose(OR=1.84,95%CI:1.50–2.25),elevated blood pressure(OR=1.17,95%CI:1.08–1.26),elevated triglycerides(OR=2.09,95%CI:1.72–2.54),and reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(OR=1.33,95%CI:1.19–1.49).In the linear dose-response meta-analysis,the ORs of males,females,and postmenopausal females were 1.14(95%CI:1.13–1.16),1.32(95%CI:1.26–1.39),and 1.34(95%CI:1.22–1.47),respectively.Conclusions Our study shows that SF is significantly and positively associated with MetS,and the risk in the male population is higher than that in the female population.This finding also supports the recommendation of using SF as an early warning marker of MetS.

Objective The present study aimed to investigate the association of red meat usual intake with Metabolic syndrome(Met S),and explore the contribution of red meat usual intake to serum ferritin.Methods Based on the data from the longitudinal China Health and Nutrition Survey(CHNS),2,797 healthy adults aged 18–75 years without hypertension,diabetes,and Met S were selected in 2009 as subjects and follow-up studies were carried out till 2015.We used the National Cancer Institute(NCI)method to estimate the usual intake of foods.Multivariable logistic regressions were performed to evaluate the association between red meat usual intake and the risk of Met S.Quantile regression analysis was used to study the relationship between red meat consumption and serum ferritin levels.Results After adjusting for potential confounders,red meat,and fresh red meat were positively associated with the risk of Met S(RR=1.41,95%CI:1.05–1.90 and RR=1.37,95%CI:1.02–1.85,respectively).These relationships showed increasing trend(P<0.05).The level of serum ferritin increased significantly with the number of Met S components(P<0.05).The quantile regression analysis showed that red meat and fresh red meat usual intake had a significant positive association with serum ferritin levels across the entire conditional serum ferritin distribution(P<0.05).Processed red meat did not exhibit a similar association.Conclusion Higher red meat usual intake was associated with an increased risk of Met S and elevated serum ferritin levels.

Background:Metabolic syndrome(MetS) is a global health problem.Physical activity(PA) is a known modifiable risk factor for MetS and individual MetS components.However,the role of PA could differ between sub-populations due to differences in the variability of PA and other MetS risk factors.To examine these differences,multi-country studies with standardized outcome measurement methods across cohorts are needed.Methods:Cross-sectional PA levels(total and domain specific) in healthy middle-aged(44-56 years) men in the Risk Factor Assessment among Japanese and U.S.Men in the Post-World War Ⅱ Birth Cohort(ERA-JUMP) Study(n=730;American:n=417;Japanese:n=313;from population-representative samples in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania,USA,and Kusatsu,Shiga,Japan) were compared.The relationships between PA levels and MetS(overall and specific components) in/across the American and Japanese sub-cohorts(adjusting for age,smoking,and alcohol consumption)were also assessed using the same instruments(pedometer and validated questionnaire) to measure PA in both cohorts.Results:A total of 510 individuals provided complete data on PA(American:n=265;Japanese:n=245).The American cohort had significantly lower mean±SD steps/day(7878±3399 steps/day) vs.the Japanese cohort(9055±3797 steps/day)(p Metabolic task equivalent hours per week(MET-b/week) vs.Japanese:4.0(0-11.3) METh/week,p <0.0001).In both sub-cohorts,each 1000 steps/day increase was associated with lower odds of having MetS(American:OR=0.90,95%CI:0.83-0.98;Japanese:OR=0.87,95%CI:0.79-0.95) and the individual MetS component of high waist circumference(American:OR=0.86,95%CI:0.79-0.94;Japanese:OR=0.87,95%CI:0.80-0.95).In the American cohort only,higher self-reported leisure PA(Met-b/week) was associated with lower odds of MetS and high waist circumference(OR=0.98,95%CI:0.97-0.99 for MetS and waist circumference,respectively).Conclusion:Higher total step counts/day had an important pr
