The 2017 SPHERIC Beijing International Workshop（or SPHERIC Beijing 2017） was held at Peking University, in China,on October 17-20, 2017. This is the first time that the SPHERIC Workshop was held out of Europe. We are delighted to present nine contributions in this Special Column of the Journal of Hydrodynamics, and take this opportunity to announce that the 13 th SPHERIC Workshop（or SPHERIC 2018） will be held in Galway, Ireland in 2018 by the National University of Ireland, and the SPHERIC International Workshop in Harbin, China in 2019 by the Harbin Engineering University.

A High-Order Meshless Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook Scheme Based on Point Collocation

A point collocation method is combined with the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) scheme. The point collocation method is based on reproducing kernel approximations. The BGK scheme developed is evaluated under the finite difference method framework. After the construction of local equilibrium distribution function, the second-order accurate least-square kinetic upwind method is employed to improve the accuracy. Some test cases are explored to validate this meshless method.

Independent cover meshless particle method for complex geotechnical engineering

A new Independent Cover Meshless Particle (ICMP) method is proposed for the analysis of complex geotechnical engineering. In the ICMP method, the independent rectangular cover regardless of the shape of the analysis model is employed as the influence domain of each discrete node, the general polynomial is employed as the meshless interpolation function of the independent nodal cover, and the Cartesian Transformation Method (CTM) is used for the numerical integration of the nodal covers cut by material interfaces, joints, cracks and faults. The present method has a simple formulation and a low computational cost, and is easy for the numerical analysis and modeling of complex geotechnical engineering. Several typical numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and robustness of the proposed method.

We prove convergence for a meshfree first-order system least squares(FOSLS) partition of unity finite element method(PUFEM).Essentially,by virtue of the partition of unity,local approximation gives rise to global approximation in H(div)∩H(curl). A meshfree method and its applications to elasto-plastic problems

Standard finite element approaches are still ineffective in handling extreme material deformation, such as cases of large deformations and moving discontinuities due to severe mesh distortion. Among meshfree methods developed to overcome the ineffectiveness, Reproducing Kernel Particle Method (RKPM) has demonstrated its great suitability for structural *** paper presents applications of RKPM in elasto-plastic problems after a review of meshfree methods and an introduction to RKPM. A slope stability problem in geotechnical engineering is analyzed as an illustrative case. The corresponding numerical simulations are carried out on an SGI Onyx3900 supercomputer. Comparison of the RKPM and the FEM under identical conditions showed that the RKPM is more suitable for problems where there exists extremely large strain such as in the case of slope sliding.

＜正＞An enhanced meshfree methods combined with level set method are employed to solve the topology optimization problems of nonlinear structures made of multiple materials under large deformations. Moving Least Square Approximation （MLSA） with discontinuous derivatives basis function is used in order to treat the moving material interface represented by level set method during the procedures of topology optimization. The enhanced MLSA formulation provides meshfree methods with the ability to handle the material discontinuity at the material interface accurately and efficiently, which can accurately and automatically solve the stress discontinuities around moving material interfaces. The numerical results show the success and accuracy of the present method by solving several 2-D topology optimization problems, involving single material structures and multiple materials structures, especially the structures made of nearly incompressible rubber-like materials undergoing large deformations.

A meshfree edge-based smoothed point interpolation methods (ES-PIM) is formulated to analyze the nonlinear heat transfer problems in two-dimensions. The nonlinearities arising from the variation of material properties and surface convection coefficients and those due to the inclusion of the radiation effects are fully considered. The PIM is used to approximate the temperature function and the thermal gradient field within edge-based smoothed domains is modified by a generalized gradient smoothing technique. To avoid iterations, quasilinearization scheme is adopted to linearize the nonlinear system equations, and for time integration the Euler backward method is used, as its unconditional stability allows for larger time steps. The smoothed incremental heat transfer equilibrium equations are then established using the generalized smoothed Galerkin weak form. A number of one- and two-dimensional heat transfer problems are studied in terms of the convergence in equivalent energy and the accuracy of temperature field. It is found that present ES-PIM achieves more accurate temperature results and better convergence than FEM and NS-PIM do using the same triangular background meshes and can effectively simulate complex nonlinear heat transfer problems.
