In the market of botanical dietary supplements, Cimicifuga heracleifolia(CH) has always been considered as an adulterated species of Cimicifuga racemosa(CR), a conventional American herb with promising benefits to counteract troubles arising from the menopause. However, the detailed comparison of their therapeutic effects is lacking. In present study, the pharmacological and metabolomics studies were comparatively conducted between CH and CR in ovariectomized(OVX) female rats. Specifically, estrogen-like, anti-hyperlipidemia and anti-osteoporosis effects were evaluated through measuring serum biochemical parameters, histopathological examination and micro computed tomography(Micro-CT) scanning. At the same time, a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS)-based serum metabolomics method was employed to profile the metabolite compositional changes. As a result, both CR and CH displayed anti-osteoporosis and anti-hyperlipemia on menopause syndrome. Meanwhile, their potentials in improving the OVX-induced metabolic disorders were discovered. In conclusion, these results demonstrated that CH is therapeutically similar to CR in relieving Menopausal symptoms and CH could be considered as a promising alternative to CR instead of an adulterant in the market of botanical dietary supplements.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the therapeutic effect of Ziyin Jianghuo Ningxin Decoction(ZYJHNXD) plus dehydroepiandrosterone(DHEA) and Menopausalhormone therapy(MHT) in patients suffering from Menopausal symptoms identified as, in terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine, symptom pattern of Yin deficiency with hyperactive fire.METHODS: Totally 180 postMenopausal women aged 40 to 60 years were assigned into four groups and accepted femoston, femoston with ZYJHNXD,femoston with DHEA, femoston with ZYJHNXD and DHEA therapies, respectively, for three months.Common questionnaire-based measure instruments included modified Kupperman index(MKI),Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety(HAMA), and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression(HAMD). Follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH), luteinizing hormone(LH), estradiol(E2), 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid(5-HIAA), norepinephrine(NE), dopamine(DA),bone mineral density(BMD), and sleep quality were evaluated before and three months after the treatments.RESULTS: In all four groups, the scores of MKI, HAMA, HAMD and the levels of FSH, LH decreased significantly(P Menopausal symptoms, restoring hormone levels, preventing skeletal rarefaction or osteoporosis,and improving sleep quality for postMenopausal women.

Randomized controlled trial(RCT)is the golden standard for evaluation of clinical evidence.To assess the effect of acupuncture,due to the specificity of acupuncture intervention,the blinding and control methods are the difficulties in study design.It is not practical to blind investigators,participants and evaluators simultaneously.At present,blinding is generally conducted for the participants and evaluators in clinical trial.We took a comparative study of manual acupuncture and electroacupuncture for Menopausal hot flush as an example to explore a new way with the reference of double-dummy design in new drug study.A single-blind and double-dummy clinical trial model of acupuncture was established.Based on individual acupuncture intervention in each group,the placebo intervention was combined to ensure the form consistency of two groups.Such a study design may eliminate non-specific effect of acupuncture,and can be conductive to comparing the specific effect of acupuncture and can provide the references and regimens for study design.

Objective: Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are energy sources needed by the body for performing daily activities and generating primary energy substances. In women who have undergone menopause, the function of thyroid hormone in their body begins to decline and thus affects the ability of the body to produce energy. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between the intakes of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats and random blood sugar levels in Menopausal women.Methods: This study was a correlational analytical research with a cross-sectional design, which was conducted in 72 Menopausal women recruited by the purposive sampling technique. In this study, a 24-hour food recall form was used, and randomized blood sugar levels were measured using a glucometer. The analysis of the data was performed using a Pearson product moment and multiple linear regression.Results: Carbohydrates and fats together affected random blood sugar levels with an F-value of 25.810 and a p-value of 0.000.Meanwhile, adjusted R^2 showed the value of 0.411, indicating that the difference in the intake of carbohydrates and fats together affected random blood sugar levels by 41.1%.Conclusions: Intake of carbohydrates and fats affected random blood sugar levels, whereas the rest were influenced by other factors,and protein intake was unrelated to random blood sugar levels in Menopausal women.

Objective:To study the effect of self prescription for nourishing liver and kidney combined with tibolone on hormone levels, lipid metabolism and immune response in women with Menopausal syndrome.Methods: Patients with Menopausal syndrome who were admitted in Hebei Weichang County Hospital between April 2014 and March 2017 were selected as the research subjects and randomly divided into to the combined group who accepted self prescription for nourishing liver and kidney combined with tibolone therapy and the control group who accepted tibolone monotherapy. The serum levels of sex hormones, lipid metabolism and immune cytokines were detected before treatment and3 months after treatment.Results: 3 months after treatment, serum E2, HDL-C, Omentin-1, VaspinC, IL-4 and IL-10 levels of both groups of patients were significantly higher than those before treatment while LH, FSH, TC, TG, LDL-C, Rsistin, IFN-γ and IL-2 levels were significantly lower than those before treatment, E2, LH and FSH levels were not significantly different between the two groups, serum TC, TG, LDL-C, Rsistin, IFN-γ and IL-2 levels of combined group were significantly lower than those of control group while HDL-C, Omentin-1, VaspinC, IL-4 and IL-10 levels were significantly higher than those of control group.Conclusion: Self prescription for nourishing liver and kidney combined with tibolone is equivalent to tibolone monotherapy in regulating the sex hormones, and more significant than tibolone monotherapy in improving the lipid metabolism and immune response in patients with Menopausal syndrome.

Objective:To investigate the correlation of sex hormones with adipocytokines and bone metabolism biochemical indexes in women with Menopausal osteoporosis.Methods: A total of 118 female patients who were diagnosed with Menopausal osteoporosis in the West China Second University Hospital of Sichuan University between September 2015 and October 2017 were selected as Menopausal osteoporosis group, and 100 Menopausal women with normal bone density who received medical examination in the West China Second University Hospital of Sichuan University during the same period were selected as normal control group. The contents of sex hormones, adipocytokines and bone metabolism biochemical indexes in peripheral blood were compared between two groups of women, and Pearson test was used to evaluate the correlation between sex hormones and disease severity in women with Menopausal osteoporosis.Results: E2 content in the peripheral blood of Menopausal osteoporosis group was significantly lower than that of control group whereas FSH and LH contents were not significantly different from those of control group;Resistin and chemerin contents in peripheral blood were higher than those of control group whereas LEP and Visfatin contents were lower than those of control group;OC, NBAP, TRACP and ICTP contents in peripheral blood were significantly higher than those of control group. Pearson test showed that the sex hormone E2 content in women with Menopausal osteoporosis was directly correlated with the contents of adipocytokines and bone metabolism biochemical indexes.Conclusion: The sex hormone expression is abnormal in women with Menopausal osteoporosis, and the specific abnormal level can objectively reflect the condition of osteoporosis.

Objective: To explore the correlation of Menopausal index with sex hormones, lipid metabolism and cytokines in periMenopausal women. Methods: A total of 208 periMenopausal women who were treated in this hospital between September 2015 and March 2018 were selected as the periMenopausal group and 150 healthy young women (20-30 years old) who received physical examination in this hospital during the same period were selected as the control group. The differences in the levels of Kupperman Menopausal index as well as the contents of sex hormones, lipid metabolism indexes and inflammatory factors were compared between the two groups. Results: Kupperman Menopausal index of periMenopausal group was higher than that of control group;sex hormones E2, P and T contents were lower than those of control group whereas FSH content was higher than that of control group;lipid metabolism indexes TC and LDL-C contents were higher than those of control group whereas HDL-C content was lower than that of control group;inflammatory factors IL-1β, IL-2, IL-18 and IFN-γ contents were higher than those of control group;the Kupperman Menopausal index of periMenopausal women was negatively correlated with E2, P, T and HDL-C contents, and positively correlated with FSH, TC, LDL-C, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-18 and IFN-γ contents. Conclusion: The Kupperman Menopausal index in periMenopausal women abnormally increases, and the specific level is directly correlated with the female sex hormones, lipid metabolism disorder and systemic microinflammation.

Breast cancer is not one disease,but can be categorized into four major molecular subtypes according to hormone receptor [estrogen receptor(ER) and progesterone receptor(Pg R)] and human epidermal growth factor receptor type 2(HER2) expression status. Ki67 labeling index and/or multigene assays are used to classify ERpositive,HER2-negative breast cancer into luminal A and luminal B(HER2-negative) subtypes. To date,most studies analyzing predictive or prognostic factors in ER-positive breast cancer have been performed in postMenopausal women,mainly using patients and samples in adjuvant aromatase inhibitor trials. In contrast,even the clinical roles of Pg R and Ki67 have been little analyzed so far in preMenopausal women. Pg R is one of the estrogen-responsive genes,and it has been reported that plasma estradiol levels are related to expression levels of estrogen-responsive genes including PGR in ER-positive breast cancer. In this article,biological differences,especially differences in expression of Pg R and Ki67 in ER-positive breast cancer between pre- and postMenopausal women are discussed. Clinical roles of Pg R and Ki67 in ER-positive breast cancer differ between pre- and postMenopausal women. We suggest that the mechanisms of development and estrogen-dependent growth of ER-positive breast cancer might differ according to Menopausal status.

Menopausal Symptoms in Japanese Nurses: Differences between Smokers and Non-Smokers

This study was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire to clarify the differences in Menopausal symptoms between smokers and non-smokers in Japanese nurses and the relationship between job-related stress and smoking. The proportion of smokers was 10.3%. Smokers are more likely than non-smokers to have Menopausal symptoms such as heart beating quickly or strongly, difficulty in sleeping, loss of interested in most things and night sweat. The scores for anxiety and vasomotor factors in smokers were significantly higher than non-smokers in the postMenopausal stage. Support to stop smoking should be provided before Menopausal transition.

Sleep Disorders in Menopause: Review of the Literature and Occurrence through Menopausal Stages

We here review principal literature data about sleep disorders in menopause and we compared it with data obtained from a systematical screening of a sample of 161 Menopausal women through questionnaires and clinical evaluation. Our data reveal high occurrence of sleep disorders in this group of women if compared to literature data about general population, in the absence of statistically significant differences among the three Menopausal stages: we find only a trend toward a higher risk of OSAS (Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome) in PM versus early PM and MT. However, none of women in our survey underwent PSG (polysomnography), essential to confirm the diagnosis of OSAS and none was diagnosed with RLS (Restless Legs Syndrome) (prior to our survey) by the Gynecologist or General Pratictioner: these data reveal the issue of too low attention towards sleep disorders in this contest. Generic “sleep complaints” are clearly associated with depressed mood and worse-quality life along the Menopausal process. In our sample, a non-specific definition of insomnia shows a peculiar relationship with a mood disorder: it is only variable not associated with higher BDI and KI scores, in fact. This might suggest that the conditions linked to depression of these women could be more specific sleep disturbances, such as RLS and OSAS.
