Hydropower reservoirs on the upper mekong river modify nutrient bioavailability downstream

Hydropower development is the key strategy in many developing countries for energy supply,climate-change mitigation and economic development. However, it is commonly assumed that river dams retain nutrients and therefore reduce downstream primary productivity and fishery catches, compromising food security and causing trans-boundary disputes. Contrary to expectation, here we found that a cascade of reservoirs along the upper mekong river increased downstream bioavailability of nitrogen and *** dams caused phytoplankton density to increase with hydraulic residence time and stratification of the stagnant reservoirs caused hypoxia at depth. This allowed the release of bioavailable phosphorus from the sediment and an increase in dissolved inorganic nitrogen as well as a shift in nitrogen species from nitrate to ammonium, which were transported downstream by the discharge of water from the base of the dam. Our findings provide a new perspective on the environmental impacts of river dams on nutrient cycling and ecosystem functioning, with potential implications for sustainable development of hydropower worldwide.

The Changes of Water Quality in Space and Time in the mekong river, Bassac river and Adjacent Waterways

Catfish （Pangasianodon hypophthalmus） farming along mekong river and Bassac river depends heavily on water quality of the two rivers, whereas water quality of these rivers are affected by the waste of aquaculture activities, agricultural production, industrial and municipal waste. This report analyzes the monitoring data on mekong river, Bassac river and adjacent waterways in the period of 2011-2012, focusing on parameters of organic pollution to assess the current quality of these two rivers. Based on the results, the water quality in the river-head was generally better than in the middle and at the end of the river, and the quality of water of the mekong river was better than Bassac river. In terms of time, water quality in July was considered the best in all the basins. At adjacent natural rivers and canals, ammonia levels increased and exceeded the Vietnamese standard in April, and BOD values were also much higher compared to two major rivers. The results of the model also showed that the levels of pollution index of the mekong and Bassac river were very low （1.33 and 1.47）, and the values （Y） in the canals were higher （1.63-1.67） but still in permitted level. Therefore, the water quality of the mekong and Bassac river in the period 2011-2012 was generally still quite good.

Glacier changes in the Sanjiangyuan Nature Reserve of China during 2000-2018

The glaciers in the Sanjiangyuan Nature Reserve of China(SNRC)are a significant water resource for the Yangtze,Yellow,and mekong *** on Landsat Thematic Mapper(TM)/Operational Land Imager(OLI)images acquired in 2000,2010,and 2018,the outlines of glaciers in the SNRC were obtained by combining band ratio method with manual *** were 1714 glaciers in the SNRC in 2018,with an area of 2331.15±54.84 km^(2),an ice volume of 188.90±6.41 km3,and an average length of 1475.4±15 *** 2000-2018,the corresponding values of glaciers decreased by 69,271.95±132.06 km^(2),18.59±8.83 km3,and 84.75±34 m,*** in the Yangtze river source area witnessed the largest area loss(-154.45 km^(2)),whereas glaciers in the mekong river source area experienced the fastest area loss(-2.02%·a-1)and the maximum reduction of the average length(-125.82 m).Overall,the retreat of glaciers in the SNRC exhibited an accelerating ***,the loss rate of glacier area in the Yellow river source area in 2010-2018 was more than twice that in *** glacier change is primarily attributed to the significant rise in temperature during the ablation *** other factors including the size,orientation and terminus elevation of glaciers also contributed to the heterogeneity of glacier change.

EFFECTIVENESS OF REGIONAL TOURISM INTEGRATION—Case of Quadrangle Economic Cooperation Zone in Great mekong Region

The Quadrangle Economic Cooperation Zone in Great mekong Region, where the Golden Triangle is located, is composed with the border areas of China, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar. The poorest and inaccessible remote Golden Triangle now faces the opportunity to develop and participate in the global economic system. Not only has the traditional border tourism between two countries in this region been growing rapidly and various tourism products cross the regions also have been developed. The article attempts to explore the multiplier effects of tourism on regional cooperation. These consequences of tourism cooperation take effect through the infrastructure improvement, facilitation of the flee movement, improvement of communication and promotion of the alternative economy. The study also points out the unexpected negative consequences to limit its role as a regional cooperative engine due to the lack of consideration of the dual economic and social structure in tourism development. The special attention should be drawn to consider the limited benefits for the marginalized community, the high transaction of the social costs related with the drug tourism and sex tourism. The paper calls for more rigorous cooperative regional plans and policies to the complexity of tourism development in this region.
