Thromboangiitis Obliterans (TAO), a common peripheral vascular disease with a long illness course and grave sufferings, can cause acromelic gangrene, ulcer and even amputation at the late stage. We have for many years used TCM syndrome differentiation to diagnose and treat the disease with good therapeutic results. The treatment of 64 TAO cases from 2001 to 2002 is reported as follows.

According to the clinical experience of professor Shan Zhaowei (单兆伟), the author has successfully developed Qingyou Yangwei Capsule (清幽养胃胶囊capsules for eliminating pyrolic Helicobacterium and nourishing the stomach) for treating the gastritis. Clinical research has shown that the capsule has a good curative effect on chronic gastritis related to pyrolic Helicobacterium. Among the 53 cases in the treatment group, clinical observation showed cure in 6 cases, obvious effect in 18 cases, effect in 24 cases, no effect on 5 cases, with a total effective rate of 90.5%. Of the 50 cases in the control group, cure was found in 5 cases, obvious effect in 13 cases, effect in 20 cases, no effect in 12 cases, the total effective rate being 76%. The total effective rate in the treatment group was higher than that in the control group. The rate of eliminating pyrolic Helicobacterium in the treatment group was 66.04%, similar to that in the control group. In a follow-up visit 6 months later, the recurrence rate in the treatment group was 13.33%, obviously lower than that of 41.66% in the control group.

Patients with a diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome （PCOS） are on the rise. About 4%-12% of women are currently estimated to have this condition. It is hypothesized that PCOS appears in women who have long-standing insulin resistance （1R）, which leads to high androgen and testosterone levels; this ultimately disrupts their menstrual cycles. Some researchers attribute IR to genetic factors, although there have been only minute changes in the human genome in the past 20 000 years. However, even with a stable gene pool, genes can be turned on and offby the environment, food and air quality and toxin exposure.

BACKGROUND： Despite a recent American Heart Association （AHA） consensus statement emphasizing the importance of resistant hypertension （RH）, its control is still a challenge for conventional medicine. The chinese herbal formula, Qutan Huayu Fang, has been used effectively to assist antihypertensive agents in blood pressure control, but its effect for RH patients is still unclear. This pilot study aims to explore the effects of taking the formula in addition to antihypertensive medication in the management of RH. METHODS/DESIGN： A prospective cohort study will be conducted in two first-class hospitals of traditional chinese medicine （TCM）. Eligible RH patients will be classified as the experimental group （n = 100） and the control group （n = 100） based on the interventions they receive. Participants taking antihypertensive agents and the chinese herbal formula will be in the experimental group and those taking antihypertensive agents alone will be in the control group. The whole study will last 24 weeks, including an 8-week observation and follow-up at 24 weeks. The primary outcomes, assessed against patient baseline conditions, will be the reduction of systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure as well as changes in TCM symptoms and signs. These outcomes will be assessed at weeks 2, 4, 6, and 8. The reductions of blood pressure will also be assessed at week 24. Cardiac events and mortality rate will be secondary outcomes and will be assessed at weeks 8 and 24. Any adverse reactions will be recorded during the study. The causal inference method will be used to assess the effectiveness of the inclusion of TCM herbal medicine in the management of patients with RH.
