Propulsion Modeling and Analysis of a Biomimetic Swimmer

We have studied a biomimetic swimmer based on the motion of bacteria such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) theoretically andexperimentally. The swimmer has an ellipsoidal cell body propelled by a helical filament. The performance of this swimmer wasestimated by modeling the dynamics of a swimmer in viscous fluid. We applied the Resistive Force Theory (RFT) on this modelto calculate the linear swimming speed and the efficiency of the model. A parametric study on linear velocity and efficiency tooptimize the design of this swimmer was demonstrated. In order to validate the theoretical results, a biomimetic swimmer wasfabricated and an experiment setup was prepared to measure the swimming speed and thrust force in silicone oil. The experimentalresults agree well with the theoretical values predicted by RFT. In addition, we studied the flow patterns surrounding thefilament with a finite element simulation with different Reynolds number (Re) to understand the mechanism of propulsion. Thesimulation results provide information on the nature of flow patterns generated by swimming filament. Furthermore, the thrustforces from the simulation were compared with the thrust forces from theory. The simulation results are in good agreement withthe theoretical results.

Nitric oxide （NO） is increasingly being used in medical treatments of high blood pressure, acute respiratory distress syndrome and other illnesses related to the lungs. Currently a NO inhalation system consists of a gas cylinder of N2 mixed with a high concentration of NO. This arrangement is potentially risky due to the possibility of an accidental leak of NO from the cylinder. The presence of NO in the air leads to the formation of nitric dioxide （NO2）, which is toxic to the lungs. Therefore, an on-site generator of NO would be highly desirable for medical doctors to use with patients with lung disease. To develop the NO inhalation system without a gas cylinder, which would include a high concentration of NO, NAMIHIRA et al have recently reported on the production of NO from room air using a pulsed arc discharge. In the present work, the temperature of the pulsed arc discharge plasma used to generate NO was measured to optimize the discharge condition. The results of the temperature measurements showed the temperature of the pulsed arc discharge plasma reached about 10,000 K immediately after discharge initiation and gradually decreased over tens of microseconds. In addition, it was found that NO was formed in a discharge plasma having temperatures higher than 9,000 K and a smaller input energy into the discharge plasma generates NO more efficiently than a larger one.

Silver nanoparticles(AgNPs)were synthesized by a bio-reduction method using an aqueous extract of mullein leaves(Verbascum thapsus L.)functioning as reducing as well as a stabilizing *** synthesis parameters such as reaction time,temperature and concentration of the extract were also studied for the synthesis of *** so prepared AgNPs were characterized by various techniques including UV-Vis spectroscopy,X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy(equipped with energy dispersive analysis of X-rays),and transmission electron *** electron microscopy images suggest the formation of polydispersed spherical AgNPs with average particle size of about 20 *** kinetic analysis revealed that the rate of bio-reduction of silver ions was very slow for initial 1h;however,later the reduction was fast as the development of characteristic color of AgNPs was completed within 5 *** observation was concomitant with the appearance of the surface plasmon absorbance peak at~430 ***,these nanoparticles were used for the treatment of wound dressings by the exhaustion *** so developed wound dressings showed good antibacterial activity against a gram positive bacterial strain Staphylococcus aureus.

Recently,the diagnoses of dental caries and other dental issues are in a queue as only X-ray-based techniques are available in most hospitals around the ***(THz)parametric imaging(TPI)is the latest technology that can be applied for medical applications,especially dental *** technology is harmless and thus suitable for biological samples owing to the low energy of THz *** this paper,a developed TPI system is used to investigate the two-dimensional(2 D)and three-dimensional(3D)images of different samples from human *** analyzing the measured images of human teeth,the results suggest that the THz parametric technology is capable of investigating the inner side structure of the *** technique can be useful in detecting the defects in all types of human and animal *** measurement and analytical calculations have been performed by using the TPI system and MATLAB,respectively,and both are in good *** characteristics of THz waves and their interactions with the tooth samples are *** the available THz-based technologies,such as TPI,and their potential applications of diagnoses are also presented.

Peripheral oxygenation level (SpO2) can provide vital information on body functions. Continuous monitoring facilitates effective diagnosis and treatment and can even be lifesaving. Clinical device monitor SpO2 using a clip, and measure light transmission through the tissue. This method limits the body locations of the clip’s placement and is sensitive to body movement, which hampers continuous SpO2 monitoring during wakefulness or sleep, thus decreasing its usability in clinics and its accessibility in homecare usage. We developed a portable, wireless, flat and low cost prototype for continuous monitoring of SpO2 that overcomes those limitations. The prototype enables convenient measurement in larger variety of body locations by spectrophotometric measurements of changes in the optical reflectance unlike other device that measure absorption through the tissue. The original design and signal processing enable reliable signal acquisition, synchronization and control. An Android’s application was developed to provide a user friendly interface for results display on smartphones. The prototype’s measurements were compared to commercial device that simultaneously measured heart rate frequency, transcutaneous oxygen tension (tcPO2) and SpO2. The prototype’s measurements accurately reflected changes caused by blood pulses, were correlated to the heart rate, and were sensitive to changes in oxygen saturation. Excellent real time behavior and synchronization were demonstrated between the hardware and smartphone software. Our prototype thus enables convenient SpO2 measurement over the entire body, while maintaining accuracy comparable to commercial device. Its smartphone application enables accessible and understandable results display to patients, care-givers and healthcare professionals. Recently a lot of medical tablets with special packets in the global market are available. For the safety and purity of the tablet, we need to scan it by developed scanner technology, which should be not more expensive and easily available in the market. The THz technology is one of them. In the proposed work, we have tasted tablet images with the help of the THz super-resolution scanner, which is already available in our lab. The AI machine learning data concept has been investigated. Good resolution of images has been obtained. Furthermore, the challenging research problems are discussed. Finally, it summarizes the recent updates in terahertz technology for drug inspection and medical applications with potential research challenges.
