Bone disorders in experimentally induced liver disease in growing rats

AIM： To investigate the change of bone parameters in a new model of experimentally induced liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC） in growing rats. METHODS： Fischer-344 rats （n = 55） were used. Carbon tetrachloride （CCh）, phenobarbital （PB）, and a single diethylnitrosamine （DEN） injection were used. Animals were killed at wk 8 and 16. Bone mineral content, femoral length, cortical index （quotient of cortical thickness and whole diameter） and ultimate bending load （Fmax） of the femora were determined. The results in animals treated with DEN＋PB＋CCh （DPC, n = 21） were com- pared to those in untreated animals （UNT, n = 14） and in control group treated only with DEN＋PB （DP, n = 20）. RESULTS： Fatty liver and cirrhosis developed in each DPC-treated rat at wk 8 and HCC was presented at wk 16. No skeletal changes were found in this group at wk 8, but each parameter was lower （P〈0.05 for each） at wk 16 in comparison to the control group. Neither fatty liver nor cirrhosis was observed in DP-treated animals at any time point. Femoral length and Fmax values were higher （P〈0.05 for both） in DP-treated animals at wk 8 compared to the UNT controls. However, no difference was found at wk 16. CONCLUSION： Experimental liver cirrhosis and HCC are accompanied with inhibited skeletal growth, reduced bone mass, and decreased mechanical resistance in growing rats. Our results are in concordance withthe data of other studies using different animal models. A novel finding is the transiently accelerated skeletal growth and bone strength after a 8-wk long phenobarbital treatment following diethylnitrosamine injection.

Physical Characterization of Batie and Bandjoun-Djione Sands(West-Cameroon),Used in the Manufacture of Concrete:Improvement of resistance to Compression

The objective of this work, was to characterize the sands of the quarries of: Bandjoun-Djione, Djengou, Hiala and La’gou I, mainly from their mechanical strengths, the equivalent of sand and the finesse module. In order to study the compressive strength of concrete made from these sands, we determined their granularity, fineness modulus and density;the concrete was then formulated by the Dreux-Gorisse method. A total of 72 specimens were constructed with the objective of achieving an average compressive strength of 25 MPa at 28 days. But we have obtained a compressive strength at 28 days, varying from 13.14 MPa to 17.50 MPa. The correction of the modulus of fineness of these sands made it possible to improve the granularity and increase the compressive strength of these concretes by more than 70%. We have thus obtained the compression resistance of 25 MPa aimed for each of the corrected sands.

Experimental Plans Method to Formulate a Resin Concrete

This work is an experimental approach based on the method of experimental plans to determine a specific formulation of a resin concrete. In this study, an unsaturated polyester resin （thermosetting resin） was used with two types of mineral fillers （dune sand and crushed sand）, and with the addition of a marble powder to ensure the continuity of the particle size mixing granular. The lack of the methods for developing this kind of composite materials, had led us to perform an initial experimental approach to define the experimental field, that is to say determine the mass proportions of the various compounds of mixture of our study. In the second approach, we have established and implemented fully experimental plans with three factors namely： factor （1）： sand, factor （2）： resin, factor （3）： marble powder. Test results being the density of polymer concrete and the mechanical resistances. Finally, multi-parameters regression allowed us to determine predictive mathematical models for the different responses of the study. Tests results showed that at three days we got a tensile strength of about 16 MPa with a resin concrete density of 1.9 g/cm3. This shows the advantages of this material.

In the present work,piezoelectric composite films made of Polyaniline(PAni)coated Lead Zirconate Titanate(PZT)particles immersed into polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF)matrix were characterized by mechanical tests,and the connectivity of the com-posite sample was determined using dielectric measurements and applying the Poon–Shin *** composite was considered a binary system with coated PZT particles as one phase and the polymer matrix the other *** support the result obtained from theoretical analysis,scanning electron microscopy of the composites were *** was observed a decrease up to 85%on the mechanical resistance when the ceramic volume fraction increases from 0%to 40%.Furthermore,the composite film no longer can be considered with 0–3 connectivity when the ceramic content is 30 vol.%or over.

Composite with Recyclable Loads for the Manufacture of Blocks to Build Popular Houses

The science space in a state school in Natal city was built using a composite consisting of gypsum, EPS （expanded polystyrene）, shredded tire, cement and water. mechanical and thermal resistances were evaluated. Inside the blocks, three types of fillings （EPS plates, aluminum cans and 500 mL bottles of mineral water） were placed in order to obtain a walls with higher thermal resistance, but also to give it an ecologically correct order, considering that both the tire and the EPS occupy a large space in landfills and require years to be degraded when released into the environment. Compression tests were conducted according to the rules. The experiments demonstrated that the temperature difference between the internal and external surfaces on the walls reached levels above 12.0 ℃. It was also demonstrated that the proposed composite has adequate mechanical strength to be used for sealing walls. The proposed use of the composite can contribute to reduce the significant housing deficit of Brazil, producing popular houses at low cost and with little time to work.

Thermo-mechanical Properties Study of Stabilized Soil Bricks to Sugar Cane Molasses and Cassava Starch Binders

The current study deals Swith thermo-mechanical properties of stabilized soil small bricks with the help of organic binders of sugar cane molasses and cassava starch. Different formulations of soil concrete have been suggested after the geotechnical characterization of samples of soil was taken. From these, it arises that the studied soil is the most plastically clay (of type A3) according to GTR classification. Samples made of small bricks and measured out at 4%, 6% and 8% of binders (molasses, starch or molasses + starch) have been warmed up to different temperatures (100°C, 150°C, 200°C and 250°C) for the rising of the thermic behavior under different conditions and submitted to crushing testings for the estimation of characteristic resistances to the compression. According to the mechanical behavior, we note an improvement of resistances for small bricks measured 4%, 6% and 8%, of molasses respectively of 32.44%, 32.06% and 23.43% against the value of reference for small bricks without molasses. In the same way, the binder (molasses + starch) also reveals an improvement of resistance to the compression of 13.27%, 26.17% and 26.17%. On the contrary, the stabilization with the starch binder did not bring a significative improvement. According to the thermic influence, the heating at 100°C of stabilized small bricks at 4%, 6% and 8% of molasses, reveals a significative improvement of resistances. Moreover, the stabilization with the starch reveals on the contrary a good behavior for heatings at 150°C and 250°C. In short, for the binder (molasses + starch), it is the heating at 200°C that shows some improvements of remarkable resistances. Different analyses of realized statistics also show the effectivity of obtained results. For all realized formulations, the measuring out at 6% of binders (molasses, or molasses + starch) seems as optimal in front of the best thermo-mechanical revealed properties.
