A new estimation method and an anisotropy index for the deformation modulus of jointed rock masses

The deformation modulus of a rock mass is an important parameter to describe its mechanical *** this study,an analytical method is developed to determine the deformation modulus of jointed rock masses,which considers the mechanical properties of intact rocks and joints based on the superposition *** to incorporating the variations in the orientations and sizes of joint sets,the proposed method is applicable to the rock mass with persistent and parallel joints as well as that with nonpersistent and nonparallel *** addition,an anisotropy index AIdmfor the deformation modulus is defined to quantitatively describe the anisotropy of rock *** range of AIdmis from 0 to 1,and the more anisotropic the rock mass is,the larger the value of AIdmwill *** evaluate the proposed method,20 groups of numerical experiments are conducted with the universal distinct element code(UDEC).For each experimental group,the deformation modulus in 24 directions are obtained by UDEC(numerical value)and the proposed method(predicted value),and then the mean error rates are *** that the mean error rate is the mean value of the error rates of the deformation modulus in 24 directions,where for each direction,the error rate is equal to the ratio of numerical value minus predicted value to the numerical *** results show that(i)for different experimental groups,the mean error rates vary between 5.06%and 22.03%;(ii)the error rates for the discrete fracture networks(DFNs)with two sets of joints are at the same level as those with one set of joints;and(iii)therefore,the proposed method for estimating the deformation modulus of jointed rock masses is valid.

Processing and performance of 2D fused-silica fiber reinforced porous Si_3N_4 matrix composites

Two-dimension （2D） fused-silica fiber reinforced porous silicon nitride matrix composites were fabricated using slurry impregnation and cyclic infiltration with colloidal silica sol. The microstructure and fracture surface were characterized by SEM, the mechanical behavior was investigated by three-point bending test, and the dielectric constant was also measured by impedance analysis. The microstructure showed that the fiber and the matrix had a physical bonding, forming a clearance interface. The mechanical behavior suggested that the porous matrix acted as crack deflection, and the fracture surface had a lot of fiber pull-out. However, the interlaminar shear strength was not so good. The dielectric constant of the composites at room temperature was about 2.8-3.1. The relatively low dielectric constant and non-catastrophic failure indicated the potential application in the radome materials field. 2008 University of Science and Technology Beijing. EFFECT OF TESTING ENVIRONMENT ON FRACTURING behavior OF Fe_3Si BASED ALLOY

The mechanical behavior of Fes Si based alloy with B2 structure was studied by tension and fracture toughness test in various testing media. The fracture strength σb of Fe3Si alloy decreased in the following order: oxygen, air and hydrogen respectively. The fracture toughness in different testing environment showed that KIC in oxygen is 11.5±0.3MPa·m1/2, and is 8.6±0.4MPa·ml/2 in distilled water. The reduction of fracture toughness is contributed to the environmental reaction of Si with water. Addition of Al element in Fe3Si is not beneficial to improve the intrinsic ductility of Fe-14Si-3Al alloy. The scattering phenomenon of fracture strength was found, and explained by fracture mechanics. It was found by means of SEM that the fracture mode changed from transgranular in oxygen to intergranular in hydrogen gas and distilled water.

Due to the hydrogen embrittlement effect,La(Fe,Si)_(13)-based hydrides can only exist in powder form,which limits their practical *** this work,ductile and thermally conductive Al metal was homogeneously mixed with La_(0.5)Pr_(0.5)Fe_(11.4)Si_(1.6)B_(0.2)using the ball milling *** hydrogenation and compactness shaping of the magnetocaloric composites were performed in one step via a sintering process under high hydrogen *** the Al content reached 9 wt.%,the La_(0.5)Pr_(0.5)Fe_(11.4)Si_(1.6)B_(0.2)H_(y)/Al composite showed the mechanical behavior of a ductile material with a yield strength of~44 MPa and an ultimate strength of 269 MPa accompanied by a pronounced improvement in thermal *** to the ease of formation of Fe-Al-Si phases and the several micron and submicron sizes of the composite particles caused by ball milling process,the magnetic entropy change of the composites was substantially reduced to~1.2 J/kg·K-1.5 J/kg·K at 0 T-1.5 T.

Centrifuge modeling of unreinforced and multi-row stabilizing piles reinforced landslides subjected to reservoir water level fluctuation

With the construction of the Three Gorges Reservoir dam,frequent reservoir landslide events have been *** recent years,multi-row stabilizing piles(MRSPs)have been used to stabilize massive reservoir landslides in *** this study,two centrifuge model tests were carried out to study the unreinforced and MRSP-reinforced slopes subjected to reservoir water level(RWL)operation,using the Taping landslide as a *** results indicate that the RWL rising can provide lateral support within the submerged zone and then produce the inward seepage force,eventually strengthening the slope ***,a rapid RWL drawdown may induce outward seepage forces and a sudden debuttressing effect,consequently reducing the effective soil normal stress and triggering partial pre-failure within the RWL fluctuation ***,partial deformation and subsequent soil structure damage generate excess pore water pressures,ultimately leading to the overall failure of the reservoir *** study also reveals that a rapid increase in the downslope driving force due to RWL drawdown significantly intensifies the lateral earth pressures exerted on the ***,the MRSPs possess a considerable reinforcement effect on the reservoir landslide,transforming the overall failure into a partial deformation and failure situated above and in front of the *** mechanical transfer behavior observed in the MRSPs demonstrates a progressive alteration in relation to RWL *** the RWL rises,the mechanical states among MRSPs exhibit a growing *** shear force transfer factor(*** ratio of shear forces on pile of the n th row to that of the first row)increases significantly with the RWL *** indicates that the mechanical states among MRSPs tend toward an enhanced *** insights gained from this study contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the failure mechanisms of reservoir landslides and the mechanical behavior of M

Investigation of loading and force sensing properties of a probe-type microforce sensor with force-distance curves

In this paper,the force-distance curves have been employed to investigate the force sensing properties of the probe-type microforce *** the preliminary studies,two kinds of probe-type microforce sensors have been used to load the objects with dry and wetted *** is a developed piezoresistive cantilever force sensor with sensitivity of 35 μN/V and the other an atomic force microscope(AFM) cantilever beam probe with sensitivity of 10.4 nN/*** force outputs corresponding to the regimes of approaching,indenting,and loading are obtained,and the properties of the stability in the approaching regime of the sensors,local mechanical behavior of the tested objects in the indenting regime,and the force sensing of the global samples are *** results of this analysis are also presented.

Combustion synthesis of bulk nanocrystalline iron alloys

The controlled synthesis of large-scale nanocrystalline metals and alloys with predefined architecture is in general a big challenge, and making full use of these materials in applications still requires greatly effort. The combustion synthesis technique has been successfully extended to prepare large-scale nanocrystalline metals and alloys, especially iron alloy, such as Fe C, Fe Ni, Fe Cu, Fe Si, Fe B, Fe Al, Fe Si Al, Fe Si B, and the microstructure can be designed. In this issue, recent progress on the synthesis of nanocrystalline metals and alloys prepared by combustion synthesis technique are reviewed. Then, the mechanical and tribological properties of these materials with microstructure control are discussed.

Shear strength degradation of gas hydrate-bearing sediment due to partial hydrate dissociation

Extraction of methane hydrate from subseafloor reservoir may potentially trigger seabed slides and induce *** address the problems,it is crucial to properly characterize the phase equilibrium condition of pore hydrate and the shear strength of the *** one of the key constitutive components,the phase equilibrium condition enforces a constraint over pore gas pressure,temperature and unhydrated water *** a constraint,however,has been traditionally ignored in analyzing the mechanical behavior of hydrate-bearing *** this paper,a series of stepwise hydrate dissociation tests was performed,and the phase equilibrium condition of pore hydrate was determined,providing an effective way to evaluate the unhydrated water content during hydrate ***,a series of direct shear tests was also conducted to explore the shear strength characteristics of the *** is shown that the shear strength of the hydrate-bearing soil can be significantly influenced by pore gas pressure,unhydrated water content,hydrate saturation and several other *** particular,the measured shear strength depends upon the initial water content of the sample,pointing to a potential problem that the shear strength could be wrongly determined if not properly interpreted.A shear strength criterion,which enforces the equilibrium condition of pore hydrate,is developed for hydrate-bearing soil,establishing a link between the equilibrium condition and the shear *** proposed equation describes well the shear strength characteristics of hydrate-bearing soils,remarkably unifying the effects of pore pressure,temperature,water content and hydrate saturation.

On the rule of mixtures for bimetal composites without bonding

In the present study,three types of bimetal composites,Al 6082 sleeve/Al 6082 core,Mg AZ31 sleeve/Mg AZ31 core and Al 6082 sleeve/Mg AZ31 core,were fabricated by drilling and *** rule of mixtures(ROM)for the flow curves and yield strengths during compressive test were *** results show that the ROM can predict well the experimental flow curves and yield strengths of bimetal composites without bonding,irrespectively of the different strain hardening behavior between the two components.

This paper focuses on mathematical models describing the mechanical behavior of ferromagnetic materials under magnetization. Through combination of the electromagnetic field theory with the theory of elastic mechanics, several nonlinear systems of fourth order partial differential equations were deduced. By making further assumption, the first-order approximation of the above equations was established, of which the solutions are good enough for engineering application.
