The madden–julian Oscillation(MJO)has a significant impact on global weather and climate and can be used as a predictability resource in extended-term *** evaluate the ability of the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences Climate System Model(CAMS-CSM)to represent the MJO by using the diagnostic method proposed by the US Climate Variability and Predictability Program(CLIVAR)MJO Working Group(MJOWG).In general,the model simulates some major characteristics of MJO well,such as the seasonality characteristics and geographical dependence,the intensity of intraseasonal variability(ISV),dominant periodicity,propagation characteristics,coherence between outgoing longwave radiation(OLR)and wind,and life cycle of MJO ***,there are a few biases in the model when compared with observational/reanalyzed *** include an overestimate of precipitation in the convergence zone of the North and South Pacific,a slightly weaker eastward propagation,and a shift in the dominant periodicity toward lower frequencies with slower speeds of eastward *** model gives a poor simulation of the northward propagation of MJO in summer and shows less coherence between the MJO convection and *** role of moistening in the planetary boundary layer(PBL)in the eastward/northward propagation of MJO was also *** accurate representation of the vertical titling structure of moisture anomalies in CAMS-CSM leads to moistening of the PBL ahead of convection,which accounts for the eastward/northward propagation of *** simulation of the vertical structure of the wind and moisture anomalies in the western Pacific leads to a poor simulation of the northward propagation of MJO in this *** analysis of the PBL integral moisture anomalies shows that the model gives a good simulation of the moisture charging process ahead of MJO convection and that the zonal advection of moisture convergence term has a primary role in the detour of MJO over the Maritim

Simulation of the madden-julian Oscillation in Wintertime Stratospheric Ozone over the Tibetan Plateau and East Asia: Results from the Specified Dynamics Version of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model

The authors examined the madden-julian Oscillation(MJO) in stratospheric ozone during boreal winter using a simulation from the Specified Dynamics version of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model(SD-WACCM) in 2004 and 2010. Comparison with European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Interim Reanalysis(ERA-Interim) data suggested that the model simulation represented well the three-dimensional structure of the MJO-related ozone anomalies in the upper troposphere and stratosphere(i.e., between 200 and 20 h Pa). The negative ozone anomalies were over the Tibetan Plateau and East Asia in MJO phases 3–7, when the MJO convective anomalies travelled from the equatorial Indian Ocean towards the equatorial western Pacific Ocean. Due to the different vertical structures of the MJO-related circulation anomalies, the MJO-related stratospheric ozone anomalies showed different vertical structure over the Tibetan Plateau(25–40°N, 75–105°E) and East Asia(25–40°N, 105–135°E). As a result of the positive bias in the model-calculated ozone in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere, the amplitude of MJO-related stratospheric ozone column anomalies(10–16 Dobson Units(DU)) in the SD-WACCM simulation was slightly larger than that(8–14 DU) in the ERA-Interim reanalysis.

利用包括边界层爱克曼辐合－降水加热过程在内的短期气候变化模式［１］，研究了Ｍａｄｄｅｎ－Ｊｕｌｉａｎ振荡［１１，１２］形成的机制。当经圈方向用抛物圆柱函数展开，并对赤道偶对称解取ｎ＝０，２，４三个截断模时，在长波近似下的自由波解，一为向东的Ｋｅｌｖｉｎ波，另外两支为向西的Ｒｏｓｓｂｙ波。当考虑边界层动力影响后，修正后的Ｋｅｌｖｉｎ波，其向东传播的速度约为１０ｍｓ－１，且在长波波段是不稳定的，最不稳定的波出现在纬向一波附近，不稳定增长率的量级约为Ｏ（１０ｍ－６ｓ－１），理论结果和Ｍａｄｄｅｎ－Ｊｕｌｉａｎ振荡在赤道附近主体环流东传的观测事实接近。另外两支修正后的Ｒｏｓｓｂｙ波，其中经圈尺度较小的那支波，除波长极长的波外，波是阻尼的；但另一支经圈尺度较大的波，在短的波段是不稳定增长的，这似乎可以用来解释Ｍａｄｄｅｎ－Ｊｕｌｉａｎ振荡中大尺度超级云团的西传过程。这些结果表明边界层动力过程在Ｍａｄｄｅｎ－Ｊｕｌｉａｎ振荡的形成中是一种重要的机制。

2019年2—3月中国南方持续性降水成因及其与MJO的关系

基于再分析资料揭示了2019年2—3月中国南方持续性降水事件的成因及其与madden-julian Oscillation(MJO)的关系。此次持续性降水事件可以分为两个阶段:第一阶段降水覆盖了整个南方地区,第二阶段降水主要出现在华南地区,且降水强度比第一阶段更强。大尺度环流分析表明,此次降水事件中,中国南方和西太平洋的位势高度异常呈现出西低东高的形势,有利于南方地区出现偏南气流和水汽辐合。在第一阶段,整个南方地区都出现明显的水汽辐合和上升运动;而第二阶段,仅在华南地区出现显著的水汽辐合和上升运动。水汽收支诊断分析发现两个阶段中的水汽通量散度异常主要是经向水汽辐合所导致,它对水汽通量散度的贡献率达到70%以上。通过对比分析降水和MJO活动演变,发现降水的变化与MJO位相和振幅的演变有着紧密的联系。当MJO振幅明显增强(减弱)时,南方地区的降水异常显著增加(减少)。经向水汽辐合的尺度分析表明,低频尺度(大于90 d)和季节内尺度(30~90 d)的水汽和环流的相互作用对经向水汽辐合起到决定性作用,尤其是季节内经向风对大于90 d低频水汽的辐合。因此,热带地区MJO的活动可通过调节季节内经向风对低频水汽的输送,从而对此次南方地区的持续性降水事件产生重要影响。

Relationship between Cool Coma and Heat Coma Temperatures in the Oceanic Sea Skaters Halobates Collected near the Sumatra Island in the Indian Ocean

In the cruise, MR15-04 by R/V MIRAI, the samplings by the neuston net were performed in 23rd November to 14th December 2016 and three species of Halobates (H. germanus, H. micans, H. sp) were used for the temperature tolerance experiments after the collection. The neuston net was towed three times (3 × 15 min) on the starboard side of R/V MIRAI on the water surface with ship speed of 2 knot to water every 3 nights (19:00 - 20:00) at the fixed point in the south-western direction which was located at 50 km from the Sumatra island (4o03'S - 4o05'S, 101o53'E) in the Indonesia. Experiments on cool coma and heat coma were performed on the three species. Seconds for recovery from cool coma and heat coma were also examined on the Halobates in this study. Cool coma temperatures, gap temperature needed (temperature from the adapted temperature) for the cool coma and seconds for the recover from cool coma ranged 13.0oC to 25.0oC, 3.1oC to 16.1oC, 1 second to 4370 seconds, respectively. Heat coma temperature, gap temperature needed for the heat coma, seconds for the recover from heat coma ranged 29.4oC to 43.1oC, 1.9oC to 15.5oC, 2 seconds to 6420 seconds, respectively. The higher temperature of cool coma temperature during the last five days was shown when madden-julian Oscillation has passed over the ship, R/V MIRAI than the previous 10 days in the adults of H. germanus collected at the fixed place neat to Sumatra island (One way ANOVA: F-value = 2.314, df = 7, p = 0.028). Adults of un-described species, H. sp collected near to the Sumatra island, showed lower cool coma temperature [Mean ± SD: 15.51 ± 3.76 (9)] than those of H. germanus collected in the same place [16.96 ± 2.57 (191)]. This lower cool coma temperatures shown by this un-described species might be related to that this species should be a “shore” species inhabiting shore water in which many precipitation could cause the decreased surface temperature from 30oC - 31oC into about 25oC. Two Years of Oceanographic and Meteorological Data from the UNAM Buoy Anchored at Socorro Island in the Mexican Pacific

The paper analyzes oceanographic and meteorological data registered by an oceanographic buoy in the Mexican Pacific. In 2005 the Marine Science and Limnology Institute of the National Autonomous University of Mexico moored an oceanographic buoy off the coast of Socorro Island in the Mexican Pacific that transmitted data hourly from July 11, 2005 to November 15, 2007. The buoy recorded oceanographic (current speed and direction, conductivity, temperature, salinity, density, turbidity, pH, fluorescence, sea level, waves, and tides) and meteorological (wind speed and direction, temperature, relative humidity, and pressure) data. Linear spectral analysis and wavelet analysis revealed annual, seasonal, and biweekly frequencies, as well as frequencies associated with the main tidal components, and those corresponding with inertial oscillations and madden-julian oscillations.
