Theoretical and experimental analysis of continuous casting with soft-contacted mould

Coupling the quasi 3D numerical simulation of electromagnetic field and the experiments with some metals such as tin, aluminum, copper and steel, the electromagnetic characteristics of continuous casting with soft contacted mould, especially the influences of power frequency, the mould structure, and the inductor position, size and current on the electromagnetic force and pressure on the billet, were analyzed. The result shows that, in continuous casting with soft contacted mould, the electromagnetic pressure on the surface of billet increases with the rising of the power frequency as a logarithmically parabolic function and, with that of inductor current as a parabolic function. The design principle of the soft contacted mould is that 1) the mould structure should be ‘more segments and thin slits’; 2) the topside of inductor should be at the same location with the meniscus of molten metal; 3) the inductor should cover the initial solidifying shell of billet.

There usually exist narrow-long-deep areas in mould needed to be machined in special machining. To identify the narrow-deep areas automatically, an automatic narrow-deep feature （NF） recognition method is put forward accordingly. First, the narrow-deep feature is defined innovatively in this field and then feature hint is extracted from the mould by the characteristics of narrow-deep feature. Second, the elementary constituent faces （ECF） of a feature are found on the basis of the feature hint. By means of extending and clipping the ECF, the feature faces are obtained incrementally by geometric reasoning. As a result, basic narrow-deep features （BNF） related are combined heuristically. The proposed NF recognition method provides an intelligent connection between CAD and CAPP for machining narrow-deep areas in mould.

A transient,two-dimensional,coupled finite element model was employed to simulate the solidification and shrinkage of continuous casting steels by means of *** the model,a gap-dependent heat transfer condition was introduced to modify the heat flux function,and the variations of material thermal properties,mechanical properties as well as the yield function with temperature were *** solidification and shrinkage processes of four round billets and two square billets were simulated by indirect coupled *** results show that carbon content,pouring temperature,casting speed and shape of billets have distinct influence on the solidification shrinkage of *** continuous parabolic tapers were designed and optimized according to the calculated shrinkage curves of billets.

Many disadvantages exist in the traditional die design method which belongs to serial pattern. It is well known that heat treatment is highly important to the dies. A new idea of concurrent design for heat treatment process of die and mould was developed in order to overcome the existent shortcomings of heat treatment process. Heat treatment CAD/CAE was integrated with concurrent circumstance and the relevant model was built. These investigations can remarkably improve efficiency, reduce cost and ensure quality of R and D for products.

A kind of Cu base composite reinforced by 0 1μm Al 2O 3 particles were prepared by hot pressing and sintering process for steel continuous casting mould. The microstructure and properties were studied. The results show that the Al 2O 3 particle distribution is uniform, and the particles refine the grain size. The tensile fracture is a mixture of quasi cleavage and dimple due to the moderate interface strength. As a result, the composite has better soft resistance and wear resistance than those of Cu and Cu alloy. With increase in super fine Al 2O 3, the density and electric conductivity of the composite decrease, but hardness and strength increase.

The finite element analysis and the optimum design of aluminum profile extrusion mould were investigated using the ANSYS software and its parameterized modeling method. The optimum dimensions of the mould were obtained. It is found that the stress distribution is very uneven, and the stress convergence is rather severe in the bridge of the aluminum profile extrusion mould. The optimum height of the mould is 70.527 mm, and the optimum radius of dividing holes are 70.182 mm and 80.663 mm. Increasing the height of the mould in the range of 61.282 mm to 70.422 mm can prolong its longevity, but when the height is over 70.422 mm, its longevity reduces.

Aim To develop blade mould CAD/CAM system of torque converter. Methods The mouldconsisted of four parts and an interactive computer program was developed to design a blade mould of torque converter based on UG at workstation. Results As compar- ed to manual modeling, it is showed in the application that this means not only improves the accuracy of blade shape and manufacture efficiency of converter, but also reduces costs. Conclusion It is proved that this CAD/CAM system is successful, and it opens up widely prospects for design and manufacture of the blade elementsand their moulds.
