In order to provide a novel biomimetic composite substrate for tissue engineering and explore the interaction between cells and this type of material,we developed chitosan/liquid crystal(CS/LC)composite hydrogel with embedded LC phases by composing of cholesterol hydroxypropyl cellulose ester liquid crystalline material and *** micromorphology of CS/LC composite hydrogels exhibited‘islands-sea’phase separation structures similar to the‘fluid mosaic model’of *** vitro cell compatibility study suggested that 3T3 is fibroblasts exhibited better initial cell adhesions and higher proliferation rates on the composite hydrogel than on the polystyrene control plate and the pure LC *** novel CS/LC composite hydrogel provides more favorable interface for cell growth and proliferation and may serve as potentially active substrate for engineering interfaces to live cells.

The photovoltaic effects of chlorophyll‐a(chla) and the effects of stearic acid, egg phosphatide and cholesterol on those were investigated by means of measuring the photoinduced potentials of SnC 2 /chla electrodes. Because of the formation of liquid crystal states, appropriate concentrations of stearic acid and egg phosphatide added in a certain system could increase the photovoltaic effects of chla. Cholesterol always decreased the photovoltaic effects of chla because there was no liquid crystal state formed with it.

In this study, right-handed dicinnamate isosorbide was synthesized via the esterification reaction betweefi optically active isosorbide and cinnamate. The chiral dopant was characterized by FT-IR, ^1H NMR, elemental analysis, SEM, UV absorption spectrum. After dissolving in a nematic liquid crystal mixture, the chiral dopant exhibited a temperature-dependent solubility in the chiral nematic liquid crystal mixture. Meanwhile, a relatively high value of helical twisting power of the polymerizable chiral dopant was determined. The results show that the chiral dopant has great potential in achieving a polymer stabilized chiral nematic liquid crystal film with a broad-band selective reflection. C 2009 Huai Yang. 4 mechanical model of liquid crystals （ LCs ） was used to explain the phase formation and thermal properties . The LC plusses in the model are micro- machine systems consisting of an ensemble of molecular rotors, and some dynamie parameters in a semi-experiment molecular orbit method. A novel explanation on the multi-phase formation of LC system is obtained. It is found that the value of the critical rotational velueity is a key parameter for the characterization of each homologous series. The dipole moment of the molecules was also discussed.

liquid crystals are pivotal innovations in the field of tunable ***,in the millimeter wave band,the relatively low tunability of liquid crystal limits its applicability.A design method utilizing metamaterial characteristics to enhance the tunability of a liquid crystal is *** design method is based on two theoretical *** models embed metamaterial structures into a liquid crystal,thus tailoring a new tunable material,namely,a meta-liquid *** appropriately designing the metamaterials to meet the corresponding conditions derived in different models,the tunability of the meta-liquid crystal can be higher than that of the original liquid *** application of beam scanning is provided to verify this *** beam steerable antenna arrays are designed,fabricated and *** beam scanning range of the meta-liquid crystal antenna array is much wider than that of the original liquid crystal antenna array,which confirms the enhancement of ***,this work fills the research gap in improving the performance of liquid crystals in the millimeter wave ***,a bridge is established between two significant materials:tunable materials and *** results imply that the performance of tunable materials can be manipulated by metamaterials.
