linguistic landscape and its impacts on place-making in mountain destination:A case of Mogan Mountain Town of Huzhou City,China

The place and placeness are believed to be a crucial perspective for comprehending the transformative dynamics of tourist destinations in the context of globalization and the rapid development of the tourism industry.As the material carrier of language,linguistic landscape is an intermediary for people to endow emotions and personalities into the place,becoming an effective path for exploring the place-making in a certain area.Mogan Mountain is a famous national tourist resort,which is located in Mogan Mountain Town,Deqing County,Huzhou City,China.This is a good case area for studying the relationship between linguistic landscape and placemaking in tourist destinations.There are two theories that form the theoretical foundation of the study,namely the place and the geosemiotics.Firstly,the results showed the overall style of the linguistic landscape.Multilingual labelling(52.7%),official signs(55.3%),and standardized Chinese characters predominantly shaped the linguistic landscape,with English and other languages being complementary.Secondly,from the perspective of three dimensions of the geosemiotics framework,such as inscription,language preference,and placement position,we conduct a comprehensive semiotic analysis of the linguistic landscape,which encompasses diverse facets such as fonts,materials,shifts in state,text vectors,and symmetrical arrangements.Finally,we explore the influence of linguistic landscapes on the place-making of Mogan Mountain through the dimensions of location,locale,and sense of place.The information on linguistic landscapes indicates the geographical location.These linguistic landscapes play an important role in constructing the language order,nostalgic atmosphere,exotic atmosphere,and elegant and tasteful lifestyle of the public space in Mogan Mountain.Readers of linguistic landscapes,including tourists and residents,generate and identify with the unique sense of place in Mogan Mountain.These linguistic landscapes construct the destination placeness of Mogan Mountain that combines bot

Investigation and Analysis of the linguistic landscape in High-end Consumer Business District in Guangzhou——Taking TaiKoo Hui as an Example

linguistic landscape has become an emerging research topic in sociolinguistics due to the development of urban linguistic landscape.Based on the development of linguistic landscape in TaiKoo Hui,its diverse characteristics are analyzed,and the language signs,usage,and codes are summarized.It is found that there is poor transmission effect of multilingual landscape information and improper use of linguistic landscape in TaiKoo Hui.This paper concludes that the linguistic landscape of Taikoo Hui can be optimized from two aspects to enhance its attractiveness and competitiveness,including improving the informational function of foreign language signs and regulating the use of linguistic landscape.

Mapping the linguistic landscape of Historic Tourist Attractions:A Case Study of South Luogu Alley in Beijing

The linguistic landscape of traditional historic tourist attractions has undergone heterogeneous changes under the impact of globalization and tourism development.Guided by the linguistic landscape construction principle and meaning combination analysis,taking the linguistic landscape of South Luogu Al ey in Beijing as the research object,its unique presentation and formation mechanism are analyzed and explicated in this paper.In the first part,we describe the elements of tradition and modernity presented in both private and official linguistic landscape.In the second part,we explain these characteristics,and the results show that:traditional elements dominated with each presents unique characteristics while modern elements especially English have been extensively employed than ever before,functioning as the information disseminator and prestige symbol.Finally,certain degrees of problems need to be meticulously considered so as to foster the renewal progress of the historic tourist attractions.

Multilingual Practices and Multiple Contestations in the linguistic landscape of Selected Towns in Oromia:A geosemiotic perspective

This study analyzed a linguistic landscape,which is a relatively recent development in sociolinguistic research committed to the investigation of the visual manifestations of the relationships observed between language or semiosis and society in the public space.There has been less attention on the semiotic interpretations in the public environments despite the ubiquitous nature of such signs in Ethiopia.This study intends to fill this gap through Semiotic landscape research.By means of mixed methods,qualitative and quantitative,it aims to discover the contestations in the linguistic landscape(LL,henceforth)of selected urban environments in Oromia.The study employed a theoretical concept of geosemiotics from social semiotics as an analytical tool.Visual data consisting of 1275 photographs of signs were collected from the main streets of Adama,Jimma and Sebeta towns from different domains of sign using bodies.Besides,data were collected through in-depth interviews with major LL actors,selected based on purposive sampling technique.The analysis demonstrated that some top-down and most of bottom-up signs showed varieties of multilingual practices,contestations,identity constructions and other related social concerns.The absence of a clear policy on language use on signs at both federal and regional levels has resulted in contestations.

Contrastive Study of Public Sign Translation and linguistic landscape from the National Strategy Perspective

Study on public sign translation and linguistic landscape has become the most practical way of serving the national strategy of language service by the Chinese linguistic scholars.Contrasts of their definitions,functions,research scope and perspectives,and research content are made and approaches to coordinating the two research fields are proposed.It is pointed out that the two concepts are neither the same nor contradictive.linguistic landscape study can only be enriched and better serve the national strategy if the research fruits of public sign translation are absorbed.

Translation of Metro Station Names in Guangzhou and Foshan from the Perspective of Symbolic Function of Translation landscape

Guangzhou and Foshan enjoy relatively mature metro network.However,some names of metro stations are over-transliterated in Pinyin.Such a translation method is used in translating general names,nouns of locality and some names of tourist destinations.With translation landscape and linguistic landscape theories,the reasons and impacts of over-transliteration in Guangzhou and Foshan metro will be discussed from the perspective of symbolic function.English names of Metro stations in other cities serve as a reference so as to appropriate solutions.

语言景观作为文化在公共空间中的重要呈现，是文化变迁研究的突破点。东巴文作为一种濒危语言，在旅游中被作为文化资源开发，形成当地的语言景观。虽然政府、研究者均期待通过旅游复兴东巴文，但是旅游的相关影响在学界中至今未达成共识。通过定性研究，以丽江作为研究地，运用语言景观信息功能与象征功能的理论框架，对旅游影响东巴文语言景观进行探讨。研究发现，旅游中东巴文景观虽然突出，但是流于形式，旅游“复兴”的东巴文景观仅具有象征功能，成为一种旅游商业符号，缺乏支撑语言活力的信息功能。研究认为，东巴文的未来发展需要另辟新径，东巴文的真正复兴需要从东巴文原有的发展模式中去寻找启示，其精髓更大程度需依赖文化精英维系。
