Relationship Between Language and Thought:linguistic determinism,Independence,or Interaction?

The relationship between language and thought has long been a topic of great interest in the field of linguistics,especially in ***,Humboldt,Trendelenburg Sapir,Whorf,Gui Shichun,Lian Shuneng,and Bao Human are some of the well-known scholars who have conducted research on the relationship between language and *** regard to the relationship between language and thought,there are three main *** first group of scholars,represented by Sapir and Whorf,supports linguistic *** scholars believe that language and thought are mutually ***,others believe that language and thought are *** from Sapir-Whorf hypothesis and their theory of linguistic determinism and linguistic relativity,this article agrees with the influence of language over thought but refutes the extreme viewpoint of linguistic determinism from several points,proving the independence and mutual influence of language and *** article finally concludes that the preferred relationship between language and thought should be that they are independent but interactive.

Implications of Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis for Language Learners: Taking the Example of Chinese and English

The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis(SWH) highlights Sapir’s and Whorf’s viewpoints of the relationship between language and thought. They hold that language and thought are somewhat interwoven. Language is not simply a way of voicing ideas, but is the very thing which shapes those ideas. This paper confirms Sapir’s and Whorf’s views on language and culture and discusses the implications of Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis for Chinese-English learners. This paper also provides a contrast between English and Chinese characteristics.

It has long been realized that language is of great importance to culture and that the impact of culture upon a given language is *** claim about the relationship between language and culture is that the structure of a particular language influences the habitual thought of its ***,the claim is referred to as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis,which is composed of two *** strong version,also known as linguistic determinism,states that language patterns determine speaker’s *** weak version,also known as linguistic relativity,implies that language do really influence thought but doesn’t determine it *** paper tries to give a brief introduction to the hypothesis,illustrate some experiments used to test the theory and state some arguments against the strong version of the *** the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis doesn’t offer the most reasonable explanation of the nature of the relationship between language,culture and thought,it is still influential in the development of linguistic science.
