We aimed at reporting the chemical constituents and antimicrobial activities of Leea aequata L.,a traditional folk medicine used in Myanmar for the treatment of wounds and skin diseases.A new neolignan,(7S,8R)-9′-O-acetylcedrusin(1),a new lactam,(3S,4S)-4-chloro-3-hydroxypiperidin-2-one(2),along with 21 known compounds,including fve lignans(3-7),four favonoid glycosides(8-11),and others(12-23),were isolated from the ethanoic extract of the aerial parts of L.aequata.The structures of the new compounds were determined by NMR,MS,and ECD spectra.For all the antimicrobial tests of the 23 compounds,only 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid ethyl ester(17)showed weak inhibitory activities against Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica subsp.enterica.

Isatis indigotica Fort.(Chinese woad)is a species with an ancient and well-documented history as an indigo dye and medicinal plant.It is often confused with Isatis tinctoria L.(European woad),a medicinal plant in Europe.Here,the differences between I.indigotica and I.tinctoria are systematically described.The usage development history,clinical applications and pharmacological activities,and chemical components of I.indigotica are also summarized.lignans,indole alkaloids,and their corresponding derivatives have been identified as the major active ingredients of I.indigotica and are associated with anti-viral,anti-inflammatory,anti-cancer,and other health-promoting activities.Notable progress has been made in understanding the biosynthetic pathway and regulation mechanism of lignans and indole alkaloids in I.indigotica,the results from which should facilitate the process of targeted metabolic engineering or synthetic biology.Moreover,multiple biotechnology methods such as polyploid breeding and genetic engineering have been used with I.indigotica to result in,for example,greater yields,higher levels of bioactive component accumulation,and enhanced stress tolerance to salt,drought,and insects.Some issues require additional analyses,and suggestions for future research on I.indigotica are also discussed.

Dysosma versipellis is the rhizome of Bajiaolian in Berberaceae.It is a unique medicinal plant in China and it was the first to be recorded in Shennong’s Classic of Materia Medica(unknown author,25–220 C.E.).It has complex chemical components as well as complex,pharmacological and toxicological effects are extensive.Based on the recent research progress,the chemical constituents,pharmacological activities and toxicological effects of Dysosma versipellis were summarized.Combined with the core concept of quality markers of traditional Chinese medicine,the prediction and analysis were carried out from the aspects of phytogenetics and the source pathway of specific chemical constituents,traditional medicinal properties,traditional efficacy,chemical composition measurability,blood components,and pharmacokinetics,in order to provide reference for further study of Dysosma versipellis.

Kadsura coccinea:A rich source of structurally diverse and biologically important compounds

The genus Melodinus(Apocynaceae) comprising approximately 53 species is mainly distributed in the tropical and subtropical areas of Asia,with eleven species occuring in China.This genus has been regarded as a rich source of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids with diverse structural skeletons and effective biological activities.However,the non-alkaloid components from the plants of Melodious have been rarely investigated.We have recently investigated the non-alkaloid extract of M.suaveolens,a woody liana narrowly distributed in the south of China.Five known lignans(1-5)were isolated from the stems of M.suaveolens.Their structures including relative configurations were determined by spectroscopic methods,such as 1 D,2 D NMR spectra and HRESIMS.Their structures were determined as(7 R,8 S)-dehy drodiconiferyl alcohol-γ’-methyl ether(1),cleomiscosin A(2),pseuderesinol(3),threo-2,3-bis-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-3-methoxypropanol(4),glaberide I(5).These compounds were found for the first time inthe genus.

Kadsura coccinea belongs to medicinally important genus Kadsura from the Schisandraceae family.It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and gastroenteric disorders.The initial phytochemical work focused on the identification of some structurally novel and diverse natural products,which turned the attention of many researchers towards this plant.Thus far,202 compounds have been reported in this plant.lignans and terpenoids were found as the main chemical constituents of this plant.Some of the triterpenoids and sesquiterpenoids with novel structures are of particular interest for natural product researchers.The isolated compounds of this plant have shown different bioactivities including anti-tumor,anti-HIV,anti-inflammatory,nitric oxide(NO)production inhibitory and other pharmacological effects.This review systematically summarizes all the phytochemical and pharmacological work done so far on K.coccinea,and can be used as a reference for future research on this plant.

Phyllanthus amarus plant is used in the traditional system of medicine as a hepatoprotective drug for which the majorlignans phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin are responsible.So far,no significant work has been done on the culture of this plant.Realizingthe hepatoprotective potential,the present investigation was undertaken.A cost effective process was developed for enhancingphyllanthin and hypophyllanthin utilizing the immobilization technique.HPTLC was used to compare the phyllanthin and hypophyllanthincontents in calcium alginate immobilized cells obtained from fresh grown plants and MS medium was supplemented withdifferent abiotic elicitors,under aseptic conditions for the treatment with chitosan,copper sulphate,phenylalanine and silver nitratesolution to make the whole process commercially viable.It was revealed that silver nitrate and phenylalanine at low concentrationenhances phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin yield as compared to control immobilized cell culture.The study revealed that an increase inthe content of phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin was elicitor concentration dependent and silver nitrate treatment gave a maximum yieldof hepatoprotective bioactives as compared to the other abiotic elicitors used.

The Piper betle,belonging to Piper genus of the Piperaceae family,is an evergreen and perennial creeper used in several traditional medicines.This plant has been known to possess antioxidant,antitumor,antibacterial,anti-inflammatory and antimalarial activities.A wide range of chemical compounds including alkaloids,simple phenylpropanoids,lignans,flavonoids,steroids,triterpenoids,sesquiterpenes,monoterpenes have been isolated from this plant.The present review summarized the information concerning phytochemistry and biological activity of P.betle,providing references for the future research of this plant.

Flax contains large amounts of hormone-like compounds, especially lignans. These socalled phytoestrogens are thought to inhibit the cell growth of hormone-sensitive cancers. Hence, we analysed the influence of flax root extracts at various stages of maturity on the proliferation and cytotoxicity in oestrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer cells (MCF7) in vitro. Flax root extracts were prepared by using lignan extraction. The extracted compounds were analysed by Pyrolysis-Field Ionisation Mass Spectrometry. Various extract concentrations were applied to the cells to test for proliferation (BrdU test) and cytotoxicity (LDH test). A significantly higher inhibition of cell proliferation was observed with an extract made from 9-week-old flax roots in comparison with that of 3- and 6-week-old roots. Older roots contained more lignans and other phenolic substances than younger roots. The maturity grade of plants or their various parts is thus important for the production and concentration of secondary metabolites and leads to different biological effects on breast cancer cell growth.

Ailanthus altissima(Mill.)Swingle is a deciduous tree belonging to the Simaroubaceae family.The root and stem bark are traditional medicines for treating many diseases,such as diarrhea,dreaminess and intestinal tract bleeding.Phytochemical investigation of Ailanthus altissima(Mill.)Swingle led to the isolation of eight compounds.Chemical structures of these compounds were identified by analyzing their NMR spectroscopic data.Among them,compounds 1,4,5,6 and 8 were isolated from Ailanthus Desf.for the first time.The antioxidant activities of these compounds were determined by DPPH radical scavenging method.
