A Parallel-based lifting Algorithm and VLSI Architecture for DWT

A novel Parallel-Based lifting Algorithm （PBLA） for Discrete Wavelet Transform （DWT）, exploiting the parallelism of arithmetic operations in all lifting steps, is proposed in this paper. It leads to reduce the critical path latency of computation, and to reduce the complexity of hardware implementation as well. The detailed derivation on the proposed algorithm, as well as the resulting Very Large Scale Integration （VLSI） architecture, is introduced, taking the 9/7 DWT as an example but without loss of generality. In comparison with the Conventional lifting Algorithm Based Implementation （CLABI）, the critical path latency of the proposed architecture is reduced by more than half from （4Tm ＋ 8Ta）to Tm ＋ 4Ta, and is competitive to that of Convolution-Based Implementation （CBI）, but the new implementation will save significantly in hardware. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed architecture has good performance in both increasing working frequency and reducing area.

Fault Diagnosis of a Rotor Based on a lifting Wavelet and Local Wave

Aiming at the mode mixture in local wave decomposition（LWD） caused by a noise signal, the original data is preprocessed using the lifting wavelet transformation to suppress abnormal interference of noise and improve the quality of decomposition. It is employed to analyze the vibration signal of rotor rub-impact for extracting the weak impulsive feature. The signal is decomposed into intrinsic mode functions by LWD, then the high-frequency components are analyzed by Hilbert envelop demodulation. The period of the impulse response can be achieved, and the modulate fault feature of the vibration signal of a rotor system with rub-impact fault can be extracted exactly. Analysis results show that the proposed method is accurate and efficient, and is expected to be applied in engineering practice effectively.

In recent years, wavelet methods have become a powerful tool for signal processing and mathematic analysis. lifting scheme, which does not rely on Fourier transform, is a significant breakthrough in the field of wavelet analysis in recent years. A flexible wavelet may be constructed in spatial domain by the lifting scheme. Lfting scheme provides diversity and agility for constructing wavelet. The constructing wavelet is no longer defined as the dilation and translation of one fixed function, so it is suitable for constructing wavelets on the interval, curved surface, and irregular grids. In addition, The lifting scheme provides a great deal of flexibility, so it can be designed according to the application. A typical case of lifting scheme consists of three basic steps: split, predict and update. The flexible wavelet can be custom constructed by designing the prediction operator and update operator. Using the flexible wavelet, a sequence of finite element approximation spaces which are nested and hierarchically expanded can be produced. The method has high calculation speed and precision and is suited for constructing adaptive algorithm. …..

The effective fundamental frequency tracking is an important prerequisite for harmonics control. Traditional fourier transform for harmonics detection only reflect signal frequency domain information. The first generation wavelet transform still developed on the basis of fourier transform. Studying the second generation wavelet lifting scheme, this paper proposes the principles of fundamental frequency tracking based on lifting multi-resolution algorithm. Determining sampling frequency and selecting db5 wavelet for lifting, detailed practical steps are given. A variety of experiments for different harmonics models are carried out. The results prove that for fundamental frequency tracking effect, the second generation wavelet used in this paper is better than traditional fourier transform and the first generation wavelet transform.
