Sharkovskii proved that, for continuous maps on intervals, the existence of 3-cycle implies the existence of all others. li and yorke proved that 3-cycle implies chaos. To establish a domain of uncountable cycles in the logistic map and to understand chaos in it, the fixed points of 3-cycle are obtained analytically by solving a sextic equation. At one parametric value, a fixed-point spectrum, resulted from the Sharkovskii limit, helps to realize chaos in the sense of li and yorke.

Let l=[0,1] and ω0 be the first limit ordinal number. Assume that f:l→l is continuous, piece-wise monotone and the set of periods of f is {2i: i∈li-yorke∪N}. It is known that the order of （l, f） is ω0 or ω0 + 1. It is shown that the order of the inverse limit space （l, f） is ω0 （resp. ω0 + 1） if and only if f is not （resp. is） chaotic in the sense of li-yorke.

Consider the subshifts induced by constant-length primitive substitutions on two symbols. By investigating the equivalent version for the existence of li-yorke scrambled sets and by proving the non-existence of Schweizer-Smítal scrambled sets, we completely reveal for this class of subshifts the chaotic behaviors possibly occurring in the sense of li-yorke and Schweizer-Smítal.

In this work, we analyzed the impact of interventions on populations which exhibit unimodal dynamics. The six landmarks that characterize the “shape” of the unimodal reproduction curve f ( x ) of the difference equation, X n+1 = f ( X n )?, are defined and used in order to examine and determine the behavior of dynamics of populations. By using the li-yorke criterion for determination of chaos we propose a qualitative intervention rule that can be applied without any explicit population equation. This proposed strategy for intervention brings out many interesting behaviors in population dynamics. A qualitative decision rule can be applied with a straight edge without any population equation and therefore offers a robust strategy for the management of populations.
