MURID RODENTS FROM THE late pliocene OF YANGQUAN AND YUXIAN, HEBEI

Daodi is considered to be a late pliocene locality near Nihewan, a classic site well known for its abundant and diverse Plio-Pleistocene mammalian fossils. An assemblage of micromammals was collected by the first author from eight quarries at Daodi by screen-washing in 1984. Preliminary reports on 26 species of small mammals collected and more detailed studies of lagomorphs have been given (see Cai, 1987; 1989). This paper deals with the material of the rodent family Muridae in the collections.

Fossil pyrenes are important material for investigating past biogeography and biodiversity of the genus *** pyrenes were morphologically described from late pliocene of Fudong Village in northwestern Yunnan Province,southwestern *** fossils are characterized by reniform,elliptic,D-shaped or drop-shaped general view,convex dorsal side,straight but sometimes curved ventral side,and reticulate surface *** show high morphological diversity and were divided into seven different morphotypes base on several *** is the first fossil record of Rubus pyrenes in *** new find would significantly increase our understanding of past biogeography of this *** suggests several Rubus species might have coexisted at Fudong Village during late *** diversity of Rubus might have already occurred in this region at that time.

Mineralized wood collected from late pliocene strata near Gorbki village in the Transcarpathian region of Beregovo Kholmogor’e in southwestern Ukraine was anatomically studied and *** wood possesses distinctive anatomical features and has distinct growth rings with an abrupt transition from early-to *** consists of tracheids with 1-3 seriate,dominating bi-seriate,opposite pits on the radial walls and taxodioid crossfield pitting,indentures *** are uni-seriate and 1 to 73 cells *** parenchyma horizontal walls thin and *** parenchyma distributed in early-and late-wood and is solitary and diffuse,with end walls nearly smooth or slightly *** combination of features observed in the wood indicates it belongs to the conifer family Taxodiaceae and is most similar to modern Sequoia and assigned to the fossil genus *** with species of Sequoioxylon show it is most similar to Sequoioxylon burejense,but ray tracheids were not found in our *** describe the specimens here as Sequoioxylon *** noting this *** Sequoia is distributed in the northern California coastal forest eco-region of northern California and southern Oregon in the United States where they usually grow in a unique environment with heavy seasonal precipitation(2500 mm annually),cool coastal air and fog *** study supplies magafossil evidence of Sequoioxylon as an element of the late pliocene forest community in Ukraine and indicates a climate with heavy seasonal precipitation and fog drip.

A continuously accumulated section(the Yanyu section) of Red Clay and loess-palaeosol sequence from the southernmost Chinese Loess Plateau was selected for this study of palaeoclimate of the late pliocene to early Pleistocene *** of the Red Clay accumulation and onset of loess deposition was coincident with the beginning of extensive Northern Hemisphere glaciation at 2.6 *** observations and compositional analyses suggest an Aeolian origin for the Red Clay,much like the processes experienced by the loess-palaeosol sequence. pedogenic analysis indicates that the late pliocene Red Clay first experienced complete decalcification and illuviation(mechanical translocation of clays) in all horizons,including the present carbonate precipitation zones,but other chemical alterations have been rather weak and even weaker than experienced by the overlying loess-derived *** contrast to the Pleistocene climate characterized by frequent and large-amplitude fluctuations between cold-dry and warm-wet,a relatively steady warm-dry climate condition is implied for the late *** rate assessment indicates a much lower accumulation rate during the late pliocene than in the early Pleistocene,in agreement with a notable systematic coarsening from the Red Clay to the overlying loess and ***,these features suggest that the dust transport agent,the northwesterly winds,were weaker over the late *** transition from Red Clay to loess possibly marked a significant and rapid shift in the climatic system in east Asia.C.2002 Elsevier Science B>*** rights reserved.
