Survey and technological analysis of laser and its defense applications

The laser technology has made remarkable progress over the past couple of *** is being widely employed in diverse domains,such as holography,space sciences,spectroscopy,medical sciences,micro and power electronics,industrial engineering,and most distinctively,as directed energy military *** to their active transmissions,laser systems are similar to microwave radars to some extent;however,unlike conventional radars,the laser operates at very high frequencies thus making it a potent enabler of narrow-beam and high energy aerial deployments,both in offensive and defensive *** modern avionics systems,laser target indicators and beam riders are the most common devices that are used to direct the laser Guided Weapons(LGW)accurately to the ground ***,compact size and outstanding angular resolution of laser-based systems motivate their use for drones and unmanned aerial ***,the narrow-beam divergence of laser emissions offers a low probability of intercept,making it a suitable contender for secure transmissions and safety-critical ***,the developments in space sciences and laser technology have given synergistic potential outcomes to use laser systems in space *** paper comprehensively reviews laser applications and projects for strategic defense actions on the ground or in ***,a detailed analysis has been done on recent advancements of the laser technology for target indicators and *** also reviews the advancements in the field of laser communications for surveillance,its earlier state of the art,and ongoing scientific research and advancements in the domain of high energy directed laser weapons that have revolutionized the evolving military *** offering a comprehensive taxonomy,the paper also critically analyzes some of the recent contributions in the associated domains.

0.532-μm laser conditioning of HfO_2/SiO_2 third harmonic separator fabricated by electron-beam evaporation

The 0.532-μm laser conditioning of HfO2/SiO2 third harmonic separator fabricated by electron-beam evaporation （EBE） was studied. The laser induced damage threshold （LIDT） of the separator determined by 1-on-1 test is 9.1 J/cm^2 and it is 15.2 J/cm^2 after laser conditioning determined by raster scanning. Two kinds of damage morphologies, taper pits and flat bottom pits, are found on the sample surface and they show different damage behaviors. The damage onset of taper pits does not change obviously and the laser conditioning effect is contributed to the flat bottom pits, which limits the application of laser conditioning.

Numerical modeling of the thermally induced core laser leakage in high power co-pumped ytterbium doped fiber amplifier

We propose a novel model to explain the physical process of the thermally induced core laser leakage(TICLL) effect in a high power co-pumped ytterbium doped fiber(YDF) amplifier. This model considers the thermally induced mode bending loss decrease and the thermally induced mode instability(TMI) in the coiled YDF, and is further used to reproduce the TICLL effect in the high power co-pumped step-index 20/400 fiber amplifier. Besides, the TICLL effect in the copumping scheme and counter-pumping scheme is compared. The result proves that the TICLL effect is caused by the combined effect of the thermally induced mode bending loss decrease and the TMI, and could be mitigated by adopting the counter-pumping scheme. To our best knowledge, this is the first theoretical explanation of the TICLL effect in high power fiber amplifier.

The special shaped laser spot for driving indirect-drive hohlraum with multi-beam incidence

In indirect drive, reducing peak intensity of a single beam and controlling overlap of multi-beams are two opposite requirements for laser focal spot design. In this paper, an improved laser spot design technique for indirect drive built upon the geometric structures of laser propagation into hohlraum has been introduced. The proposed technique is able to generate appropriate continuous phase plate(CPP) producing a special shaped spot that can balance the opposite requirements. The corresponding CPP does not bring difficulties to the design and fabrication. Phase aberrations are more sensitive to the special shaped spot; however, it can be tolerable for the current beam control level.

We demonstrate a simple technique to filter out the continuum background in filament-induced remote breakdown *** inserting a polarizer before the detector,the continuum background was reduced by more than 42%in filament-induced breakdown spectroscopy at a distance of 3.8 m,while the fluorescence intensity of aluminum atomic lines remains *** through self-phase modulation during filamentation mainly contributes to the continuum *** polarization-gated technique provides a simple way to remove the continuum background in filament-induced remote breakdown spectroscopy.

A novel type of solitons in electron-ion plasmas

By using one-dimensional self-consistent relativistic fluid model, a novel type of moving relativistic electromagnetic solitons with high intensity in electron-ion plasmas where the ion dynamics is taken into account is investigated numerically. Unlike solitons with single-humped scalar potential found in previous studies, these solitons possess multi-humped scalar and vector potential. The existence of such soliton solutions is investigated in plasmas with different background densities, and the properties of these solitons are presented in detail. We found that the peculiar profile of electron density has alternating regions of humps and dips like a Bragg＇s grating.
