Development of a landscape index to link landscape pattern to runoff and sediment

Linking landscape indexes to ecological processes is the key topic of landscape ***,traditional landscape metrics based on the Patch-Mosaic Model have no ecological *** this study,the runoff-sediment landscape index coupling land use,topography,soil,and vegetation factors was constructed to link landscape patterns to runoff and *** the study area,the runoffsediment landscape index at the class scale showed an increasing trend from 0.10 in 1995 to 0.26 in *** had a higher runoff-sediment landscape index compared to grassland or *** the landscape scale,the runoff-sediment landscape index showed a decreasing trend since 1995;furthermore,it decreased by 36.24%in 2015 compared with the index in *** runoff-sediment landscape index had higher correlations with runoff and sediment compared with traditional landscape *** analysis showed that the runoffsediment landscape index had a higher contribution to runoff and sediment compared to traditional landscape metrics,explaining 90.1%of the *** soil erosion risk assessed by the runoff-sediment landscape index showed an increasing trend upstream of the Dali River *** attention should be paid to this area in future vegetation restoration attempts,as exploring the impact of landscape pattern changes on ecological processes,especially hydrological processes,plays an important role in comprehensive watershed management.

A landscape shape index-based sampling approach for land cover accuracy assessment

Spatial sampling design is one of the key steps in land cover accuracy assessment,and many traditional sampling approaches may not achieve credible spatial sampling due to the high spatial heterogeneity of land *** paper characterizes the spatial heterogeneity with three-level LSIs and determines the subsequent sample sizes and their spatial *** three-level LSIs are rLSI in a region,cLSI for each land cover class and uLSI in each geographic sampling unit in the *** rLSIs are used to derive appropriate sample sizes in the target *** cLSIs are used to assure that larger sample numbers are allocated to land cover classes with higher spatial *** uLSIs provide useful measures for selecting optimal geographic units in which sample sites will be *** LSI-based sampling approach can derive the sample sizes and determine their distributions in an adaptive way according to the spatial *** experimental case study further demonstrates that the LSI-based sampling approach obtains more appropriate sample sizes for each region,sufficient sample numbers for rare classes,and optimal sample distributions in the geographical space.

Changes in cultivated land patterns and driving forces in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, China, from 1992 to 2015

Changes of cultivated land patterns caused by major water conservation projects are rarely reported. We selected the Three Gorges Reservoir area in China to study the change in area and landscape pattern of the cultivated land in the head,central, and tail areas of the reservoir that took place between 1992 and 2015;we then studied the spatial distribution of the cultivated land in the three parts of the reservoir;finally, we studied the driving forces behind the changes in the cultivated land. The results derived are as follows.(1) During the construction of the Three Gorges Project(TGP, 1992–2015), the area of cultivated land around the reservoir decreased by30.23 million ha. This reduction occurred in phases:the most severe change in cultivated land occurred during the later stage of the project(2002–2010);only 0.62 million ha of cultivated land did not change between 1992 and 2015.(2) Spatial pattern analysis showed that the cultivated land in the three parts of the reservoir changed from a northern distribution to a southern distribution;thus, the area of cultivated land in the north decreased over the time period. The area of cultivated land in the head and tail areas decreased by varying degrees, while it increased in the central area over the 23 years, indicating that the change in cultivated land showed regional differences.(3) The TGP, the policy of reverting farmland to forest,and urbanization were the main driving factors for the change of cultivated land, but there were differences in their impacts at different stages.(4) According to the patch dynamics of the land cover change, the degree of change gradually intensified during the early and later stages of the project and then stabilized during the operational period. IMPACT OF ROAD CONSTRUCTION ON VEGETATION ALONGSIDE QINGHAI-XIZANG HIGHWAY AND RAILWAY

Based on the field investigation in August 2001 and August 2002, digitalChina Vegetation Map in 2001 and Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Plateau Vegetation Regionalization Map in1996, vegetation characteristics along two sides of Qinghai-Xizang highway and railway are studiedin this paper. Meanwhile, the impact of Qinghai-Xizang highway and railway constructions on thevegetation types are analyzed using ARCVIEW, ARC/INFO and PATCH ANALYSIS. It was found that: 1)Qinghai-Xizang highway and railway span 9 latitudes, 12 longitudes and 6 physical geographic regions(East Qinghai and Qilian mountain steppe region, Qaidam mountain desert region, SouthQinghai-Xizang alpine meadow steppe region, Qiangtang alpine steppe region, Golog-Nagqu alpine shrubmeadow region and South Xizang mountain shrub steppe region); 2) the construction of Qinghai-Xizanghighway and railway destroyed natural vegetation and landscape, especially in 50m-wide bufferregions along both sides of the roads, it was estimated that the net primary productivity deceasedby about 30 504.62t/a and the gross biomass deceased by 432 919.25-1 436 104.3t. The losing primaryproductivity accounted for 5.70% of the annual primary productivity within Ikm-wide buffer regions(535 005.07-535 740.11t/a), and only 0.80%-0.89% of that within 10km-wide buffer regions (3 408950.45-3 810 480.92t/a). The losing gross biomass was about 9.47%-17.06% of the gross biomass within1km-wide buffer regions (7 502 971.85-25 488 342.71t), and only 1.47%-2.94% of that within10km-wide buffer regions (43 615 065.35-164 150 665.37t).

The landscape index is a quantitative index which reflects characteristics of structure composition and spatial pattern in landscape studies,it is,therefore,expected to describe the spatial pattern of scientific research in bibliometric *** this study,a novel attempt to regard scientific research as a kind of‘landscape’was made,and landscape indices were improved for bibliometric analysis to measure the spatial pattern of scientific *** illustrating the feasibility of our method,global geoscience research from 1994 to 2018 was presented as a ***,spatiotemporal migration of landscape centroids was *** results indicated that global geoscience publications increased steadily and articles were highly concentrated at the country *** top 10 countries published 69.93%of total articles and 84.68%of geoscience articles were from top 20 productive *** spatial migration of centroids was mainly reflected in the longitude because of significant increasing of articles in eastern countries,especially in China with the growth rate of 747.14%.At the patch scale,the change trend of improved landscape indices verified the spatiotemporal changes of global distribution of geoscience *** the landscape scale,the strengthening of global international collaboration is the main driving forces of spatial heterogeneity of global geoscience *** study is expected to help readers to understand global trends of geoscience research in the past 25 years,and to promote the development of bibliometric analysis towards the directions of spatialization and visualization.

Spatiotemporal analysis of the impact of urban landscape forms on PM_(2.5) in China from 2001 to 2020

Urban landscape forms can be effective in reducing increasing PM_(2.5) concentrations due to urbanization in China,making it crucially important to accurately quantify the spatiotemporal impact of urban landscape forms on PM_(2.5) *** landscape indices and six control variables were selected to assess these impacts in 362 Chinese cities during different time scales from 2001 to 2020,using a spatiotemporal geographically weighted regression model,random forest models and partial dependence *** results show that there are spatiotemporal differences in the impacts of landscape indices on PM_(2.5).the proportion of urban green infrastructure(PLAND-UGI)and the fractal dimension of urban green infrastructure(FRACT-UGI)exacerbate PM_(2.5) concentrations in the northwest,the proportion of impervious surfaces(PLAND-Impervious)mitigates air pollution in northwest and southwest China,and shannon’s diversity index(SHDI)has seasonal differences in the ***-UGI is the landscape index with the largest contribution(30%)and interpretable *** relationship between FRACT and PM_(2.5) was more complex than for other landscape *** results of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of the spatial and temporal differences in the impact of urban landscape patterns on PM_(2.5),contributing to clean urban development and sustainable development.

Oasis cold island effect and its influence on air temperature: a case study of Tarim Basin, Northwest China

Oasis effect can improve the regional climate and habitability of an arid region. In this study, we explored the cold island effects of oases distributed along the edge of Tarim Basin by analyzing the oasis cold island effect （OCIE） intensity, spatial-temporal variation of OCIE, factors influencing the OCIE and impacts of OCIE on air temperature using geographical statistics and GIS methods based on the MODIS land surface temperature, land use/cover change （LUCC） and observed air temperature data. Results showed that all the oases in the Tarim Basin exhibited cold island effects, with the OCIE intensity highest in summer （-9.08℃）, followed by autumn （-4.24℃） and spring （-3.85℃）. The total area of oasis cold island （OCI） and the comprehensive OCIE index showed the same seasonal change trend as the OCIE intensity. However, the changing trends in areas of OCI with strong, medium and weak OCIEs were inconsistent across different seasons. Farmland and water areas were found to be the key contributors that affected the OCIE, and the area and aggregation metrics of these two land use/cover types directly contributed to the OCIE. By contrast, natural vegetation, such as forest and grassland, almost had no contribution to the OCIE. Simulation of observed air temperature data showed that if farmland is replaced by forest or grassland in the oasis, the mean, maximum and minimum air temperatures will increase significantly. This heating effect will be higher in summer （reaching 1.14℃ to 2.08℃） and lower in spring and autumn. Moreover, the heating effect of farmland being replaced by forest will be higher than that of farmland being replaced by grassland. These results can provide a basis for understanding the cold island effect of oases in arid regions.

The aim of this paper is to clarify the pattern and process of changes of landscape in riverside open spaces in urbanized *** area between the old banks of the Furukawa River in Hiroshima City was examined in this *** land use maps of the study area were drawn at seven different times were analyzed,and the number,sizes and perimeters of all patches of all land use types were *** these areas,temporal patterns of land use change over the past 30 years were divided to three stages:19661976,19761988 and *** a result of human disturbance,the riparian forest patches in urbanized areas have decreased in average size and have also become longer and narrower.

Dynamic Change of landscape Pattern at Jilin Province from 1980 to 2000

By using remote sensing images from three periods (1980, 1995, 2000) and with the support of GIS and RS, the spatial information of landscape elements of Jilin Province from 1980 to 2000 was interpreted and extracted. Using models of landscape indices such as diversity, fragmentation, and mean patch fractal dimension, dynamic spatio-temporal changes of landscape patterns of the province were analyzed. The results: ① cropland and forestland were the main landscape types, and forestland became a landscape matrix; ② in the study area, landscapes were distributed unevenly, and there was low heterogeneity, a simple ecosystem structure and a tendency of irrational landscape patterns. There were also simple spatial shapes of patches and strong self-similarities, and in terms of dynamic change analysis, patch shapes tended to be more simple; ③ from 1980 to 2000, holistic landscape fragmentation was low and changed slightly. As far as landscape elements were concerned, the fragmentation of grassland, water area, land for residential area and factory facilities was relatively low; land distribution for residential areas and factory facilities was dispersed; and cropland and forestland were most concentrated-an indication that the trend will continue. Comprehensive effects among human activity, local policy, regional climate and environmental change led to the results.

Analysis of Land Cover and landscape Pattern Change in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region Based on Globeland30 Data

With the rapid economic development and urbanization process in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, land use and landscape pattern have been changed. In order to reveal the temporal and spatial changes and provide scientific basis for the local land use planning and landscape pattern optimization made by government, based on the classification results of Globeland 30 land cover data in 2000 and 2010, this paper quantitatively analyzed the land use transfer status and the dynamic change of landscape pattern in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei by adopting the method of land use transfer matrix and landscape index. The results show that the land use and landscape patterns in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei have been changed significantly from 2000 to 2010. Overall, land use in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region has been changed greatly, which shows that the cultivated land area has been decreased by 3721.67 km2, while the artificial surface area and grassland area have increased by 2721.29 km2 and 657.09 km2, respectively. From the six partitions of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, it can be seen that the subareas with significant changes are Sand Control Farmland Protection Zone in Yellow River Flood Plain, Water Conservation Area for Sand Control in Mountain and Hilly Areas of Northwest Taihang Mountains, and Human Settlement Environment Maintenance and Farmland Protection Zone of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Urban Agglomeration. The arable land area of these three zones has decreased 572.77 km2, 1553.94 km2 and 1359.53 km2, respectively. From the perspective of landscape pattern change, patch density and fragmentation degree in the southeast and northwest of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region increase;and the dominant patches in the southeast of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region have formed a good connectivity;the whole Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region shows irregular shape and discontinuous enhancement of landscape types, the landscape patch types increase and enr
