Change Detection of land use and land cover over a Period of 20 Years in Papua New Guinea

People have an inherent tenacity to throng coastal regions in pursuit of better living conditions. As such the brisk dynamism of land use/land cover activities in a coastal region becomes obvious. The former keeps changing rapidly due to burgeoning population. A digital change detection analysis is performed with the help of Geographic Information System (GIS) on the Remote Sensing data spanning over last 20 years, complemented by in-situ data and ground truth information. This current research briefly endeavours to find out the nature of change happening in the major three coastal cities of Papua New Guinea (PNG), namely Alotau, capital of Milnebay province;Lae, capital of Morobe province and Port Moresby, capital of Papua New Guinea. Changes in land use and land cover that took place over 20 years have been recorded using landsat 5 thematic mapper (TM) data of 1992 and landsat 8 operational land imager (OLI) data. land use and land cover maps of 1992, and 2013/14, and change detection matrix of 1992-2013/14 are derived. Results show an immensely sprawling urban landscape, evincing about five times growth during 1992 to 2014. At the same time “natural forests” dwindled by 444.96 hectares in Alotau, 6977.25 hectares in Lae and “mangrove” and “grass/shrub land” decreased by 127.78 and 4859.39 hectares respectively around Port Moresby. The above changes owe to ever increasing population pressure, land tenure shift, agriculture and industrial development.

Effects of Updated RegCM4 land use Data on Near-Surface Temperature Simulation in China

Biogeophysical effects of land use and land cover （LULC） changes play a significant role in modulating climate on various spatial scales. In this study, a set of recent LULC products with a spatial resolution of 500 m was developed in China for update in RegCM4 （regional climate model version 4）. Two sets of comparative numerical experiments were conducted to study the effects of LULC changes on near-surface temperature simulation. The results show that after LULC changes, areas of crops and mixed woodlands as well as urban areas increase over entire China, accom- panied with greatly expanded mixed farming and forests/field mosaics in southern China, and reduced areas of 1） ir- rigated crops and short grasses in northern China and the Tibetan Plateau, and 2） semi-desert and desert in northwest-em China. Improvements in the LULC data clearly result in more accurate simulations of the near-surface temperat-ure. Specifically, increasing latent heat and longwave albedo due to enhanced LULC in certain areas lead to reduc-tion in land surface temperature （LST）, while changes in shortwave albedo and sensible heat also exert a great influ- ence on the LST. Overall, these parameter adjustments reduce the biases in near-surface temperature simulation.

Grasslands are the most dominant terrestrial ecosystem in China, but few national grassland maps have been generated. The grassland resource map produced in the 1980s is widely used as background data, but it has not been updated for almost 40 ***, a reliable map depicting the current spatial distribution of grasslands across the country is urgently needed. In this study, we evaluated the grassland consistency and accuracy of ten land cover datasets(GLC2000, Globcover, CCI-LC,MCD12Q1, CLUD, Globeland30, GLC-FCS30, CGLS-LC100, CLCD, and FROM-GLC) for 2000, 2010, and 2020 based on extensive fieldwork. We concluded that the area of these ten grassland products ranges from 107.80×10^(4)to 332.46×10^(4)km^(2), with CLCD and MCD12Q1 having the highest area consistency. The spatial and sample consistency is highest in the regions of eastcentral Inner Mongolia, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and northern Xinjiang, while the distribution of southern grasslands is scattered and differs considerably among the ten products. MCD12Q1 is significantly more accurate than the other nine products,with an overall accuracy(OA) reaching 77.51% and a kappa coefficient of 0.51;CLCD is slightly less accurate than MCD12Q1(OA=73.02%, kappa coefficient=0.45) and is more conducive to the fine monitoring and management of grassland because of its30-meter resolution. The highest accuracy of grassland was found in the Inner Mongolia-Ningxia region and Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, while the accuracy was worst in the southeastern region. In the future grassland mapping, cartographers should improve the accuracy of the grassland distribution in South China and regions where grassland is confused with forest, cropland and bare land. We specify the availability of valuable data in existing land cover datasets for China’s grasslands and call for researchers and the government to actively produce a new generation of grassland maps.

Exploring the historical evolution of tourism-environment interaction in protected area:A case study of Mt. Bogda

Protected areas have a double mandate of both "protection" and "use." Naturebased tourism is considered an effective tool in terms of environmental conservation. Understanding the causes and consequences of a spatiotemporal succession of tourism construction is an important channel to explore the changes of tourism-environment interaction in the protected area. To analyze the spatio-temporal variations in tourism construction lands, we adopted Mt. Bogda as an example. We systematically quantified the interaction between these changes and environmental variables and explored the evolution process of tourism-environment interaction of the mountainous protected area in the northwest arid region. Our results revealed the following:(1) In the Bogda protected area, the proportion of tourism construction lands first appeared to be increasing, then decreasing dramatically, and finally growing slowly. The spatial expansion of tourism construction lands followed the "core-periphery" pattern, respectively showing shapely infilling, reasonable agglomeration, barycenter shift, and outlying growth from 1990 to 2018 as the stages of concentrating on the core.(2) The higher land-use intensity of tourism construction drove the changes of landscape fragmentation, diversity, stability, primitive, and nature degree in the protected area. The coupling coordination between tourism and the environment in the Bogda area decreased at first, and then slowly increased. Meanwhile, tourism did not cause irreversible damage to the natural environment, and the coupling coordination degree between tourism and the environment was still in the state of balanced development. It expressed the states of original balanced, development exceeds environment and barely balanced, and superiorly balanced. The historical evolution of tourism-environment interaction in Bogda reflects the pattern of periodic changes in China’s protected areas to a certain extent.

Background:This study analysed the multi-temporal trend in land cover,and modelled a future scenario of land cover for the year 2030 in the highly urbanized state of Selangor,*** study used a Decision Forest-Markov chain model in the land change modeller(LCM)tool of TerrSet *** cover maps of 1999,2006 and 2017 were classified into 5 classes,namely water,natural vegetation,agriculture,built-up land and cleared land.A simulated land cover map of 2017 was validated against the actual land cover map *** Area Under the Curve(AUC)value of 0.84 of Total Operating Characteristics(TOC)and higher percentage of components of agreement(Hits+Correct rejection)compared to components of disagreement(Misses+False alarm+Wrong hits)indicated successful validation of the ***:The results showed between the years 1999 to 2017 there was an increase in built-up land cover of 608.8 km^(2)(7.5%),and agricultural land 285.5 km^(2)(3.5%),whereas natural vegetation decreased by 831.8 km^(2)(10.2%).The simulated land cover map of 2030 showed a continuation of this trend,where built-up area is estimated to increase by 723 km^(2)(8.9%),and agricultural land is estimated to increase by 57.2 km^(2)(0.7%),leading to a decrease of natural vegetation by 663.9 km^(2)(8.1%)for the period 2017 to *** spatial trend of land cover change shows built-up areas mostly located in central Selangor where the highly urbanized and populated cities of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya and the Klang valley are ***:The future land cover modelling indicates that built-up expansion mostly takes place at edges of existing urban *** results of this study can be used by policy makers,urban planners and other stakeholders for future decision making and city planning.

Coastal land transformation has been identified as a topic of research in many countries around the *** studies have been conducted to determine the causes and impacts of land ***,much less is understood about coupling change detection,factors,impacts,and adaptation strategies for coastal land transformation at a global *** review aims to present a systematic review of global coastal land transformation and its leading research *** 1,741 documents of Scopus and Web of Science,60 studies have been selected using the PRISMA-2020 *** revealed that existing literature included four leading focus areas regarding coastal land transformation:change detection,driving factors,impacts,and adaptation *** focus areas were further analyzed,and it was found that more than 80%of studies used landsat imagery to detect land *** growth and urbanization were among the major driving factors *** review further identified that about 37%of studies included impact *** studies identified impacts on ecosystems,land surface temperature,migration,water quality,and occupational effects as significant ***,only four studies included adaptation *** review explored the scope of comprehensive research in coastal land transformation,addressing change detection,factor and impact analysis,and mitigation-adaptation *** research also proposes a conceptual framework for comprehensive coastal land transformation *** framework can provide potential decision-making guidance for future studies in coastal land transformation.

The current study approaches the sugarcane culture expansion in Southwestern Goiás, especially in Mineiros, Quirinópolis and Rio Verde counties, which represent different times and responses to this process. The current logistics structure and future prospects for sugarcane and its derivatives transportation are studied at national level with emphasis to the aforementioned micro-region. Maps showing land use and land cover in three different years were generated from landsat TM-5 satellite images and they were used to analyze the dynamics of changes in land use and in land cover. The region is marked by strong and rapid growth in the agricultural sector and its sugar-energy industry has been expanding in recent years, although with different aspects among its counties. Since it is a promising region in this sector, due to the favorable soil and weather conditions to the crop, the region requires more investment and planning in logistics to ensure production flow and to make it stronger within domestic and foreign markets.

Water Yield of Xitiaoxi River Basin Based on InVEST Modeling

Water yield calculation and mapping are of great importance to water resource planning and management and hydropower station construction. A water yield model based on InVEST was employed to estimate water runoff in the Xitiaoxi River basin. The data included land use and land cover, average annual precipitation and potential evapotranspiration, soil depth, and plant available water content. In order to test model accuracy the natural runoff of Xitiaoxi River was estimated based on linear regression relation of rainfall-runoff in a ‘reference period’. After repeated validation, when the Z value was 6.5 the water yield was 8.30 E＋8 m3 and this was a smaller difference with natural runoff. From the distribution of water yield, south and southwestern areas of the watershed had higher water yield volumes per hectare.
