Salinity is an essential factor of lake water environments and aquatic systems.It is also sensitive to climatic changes and human activities based on concentration variations of solved minerals.However,there are few consecutively temporal studies on lake salinity variations on the Tibetan Plateau because the harsh environmental conditions make it diffcult to carry out in-situ observations for several Lakes.In this study.we constructed a remote sensing retrieval model for lake salinity based on 87 in-situ lake investigations;moreover,interannual lake salinity and associated variations from 152 Lakes larger than 50 km2 were analyzed on the Tibetan Plateau.A significant decreasing trend in lake salinity was observed between 2000 and 2019(p<0.01).The spatial variation of lake salinity was negatively correlated with lake area changes,and the optical characteristics of salt mineral solutions were generally positively correlated with mineral concentration based on the absorption coefficients of ionic solutions.The decreasing trend of lake salinity was not directly affected by the.precipitation,but was,potentially dominated by the expanding lake water volume.This study improves the understanding of regional water environmental changes and management efficacy of water resources.

Background:Limited information is available on heavy metal patterns in Lakes under rapid watershed urbanization,especially considering a large spatial gradient with a long linear distance and great variations in topographic relief.To fill this gap,we studied concentrations of a series of heavy metals in both water and sediments from 20 Lakes along a rural to urban gradient in central China,and we aimed to understand the effects of urban processes on heavy metal dynamics in lake ecosystems.Studied Lakes were divided into five groups:A(rural reservoir group),B(rural commercial fishing group),C(urban park group),D(urban recreational fishing group),and E(urban commercial fishing group).An inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer(ICP-OES)and an inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer(ICP-MS)were used to analyze the heavy metals in water and sediments.Results:An increasing trend of most heavy metals in water from rural to urban Lakes was observed.Concentrations of cadmium(Cd),cobalt(Co),lead(Pb),chromium(Cr),arsenic(As),nickel(Ni),magnesium(Mn),iron(Fe),and aluminum(Al)in water were significantly lower in rural group A than those in other groups.Arsenic in sediments of rural group A was lower than those in other groups.No other heavy metal element in sediments was significantly different among groups.The enrichment factor analysis of selected heavy metals showed there were different degrees of enrichments of heavy metals in sediments.The potential ecological risk index showed a low level for heavy metals in sediments of all studied Lakes.Conclusions:Results indicated that urban processes could have an impact on heavy metals in lake water.The sources of heavy metals in sediments were more likely from anthropogenic activities.These results could enhance our understanding of metal dynamics in lake ecosystems under urbanization and could help prevent heavy metal pollutions and promote sustainable management of urban ecosystems.

Investigations of ^(239+240)Pu and ^(238)Pu in the surface layer(0–5 cm) of bottom sediment in the Crimean 10 salt Lakes from 4 geographical groups were carried out for the first time. The ^(239+240)Pu varied widely between regional geographical groups of Lakes as well as within groups too and ranged from 11±4 to 451±43 mBq^(239+240)Pu/kg. The highest levels of ^(239+240)Pu—419±27, 443±24 and 451±43 mBq/kg were observed in the Yevpatoriya(Lake Kyzyl-Yar), the Tarkhankut(Dzharylhach) and the Kerch group(Tobechik), respectively. The lowest values of ^(239+240)Pu were identified in three Lakes of the Perekop group and were 20±12, 24±6 and 48±6 mBq/kg. In all Lakes ^(238)Pu was an order of magnitude lower than 239+240 Pu and varied from 4.8±2.6 to 30.7±5.5 mBq/kg. The ^(238)Pu activity was decay-corrected to 1986. The characteristic ratio of the ^(238)Pu/239+240 Pu activities in the sediment and percentage of the Chernobyl-derived Pu was calculated. The largest percentages of the Chernobyl-derived Pu were observed in the Evpatoriya group(Lake SasykSivash)—16.2%±8.26%, the Tarkhankut group(Dzharylhach)—8.4%±2.10% and the Kerch group(Aktash)—10.5%±5.56%. The study of the depth distribution of plutonium in the Lake Kyzyl-Yar bottom sediment core(0–25 cm) was fulfilled. It was shown that 239+240 Pu was high enough in all studied layers of bottom sediment, but the highest activity ratio ^(238)Pu/239+240 Pu(0.062±0.020) was found in the deepest layer of 15–20.5 cm and the percentage of Chernobyl-derived Pu was estimated at 6.8%±2.85% in this layer.

An unusual feature of the saline stratified Lakes that were formed due to ongoing postglacial uplift on the White Sea coast is the presence of several differently colored thin layers in the zone with sharp gradients. Colored layers in five Lakes at various stages of separation from the sea were investigated using optical microscopy, spectrophotometry, spectrofluorimetry, and photobiology. The upper greenish colored layer located in the aerobic strata of all Lakes near the compensation depth of 1% light penetration contains green algae. In the chemocline, another layer, brightly green, red or pink, is dominated by mixotrophic flagellates. Despite the very low light intensities and the presence of H 2 S, active photosynthesis by these algae appears to be occurring, as indicated by high values of the maximum quantum yield of primary photochemistry, electron transport activity, photosynthetic activity of photosystem II, the fraction of active centers, and low values of heat dissipation. In the reduced zone of the chemocline, a dense green or brown suspension of anoxygenic phototrophs(green sulfur bacteria) is located.

A considerable part of the world's population is currently experiencing a severe scarcity of freshwater and nutrition. Inland aquaculture has the fastest growth in fresh waters, and this contributes to the eutrophication of freshwater bodies. The increase in freshwater aquaculture impacts on the increasing demand for fresh water. A way to overcome this is to develop aquaculture in saline Lakes. This article discusses how saline and hypersaline Lakes may contribute to overcome this problem and gives a list of fish and shrimp species that can be cultivated in saline Lakes. Successful development of aquaculture depends on a healthy cultured stock of commercial fish and shrimps. A sustainable healthy stock of fish and shrimps can be only maintained using live food for the cultured fish larvae, fry and fingerlings. As well as Artemia spp. there are many other crustacean species with the potential for growing in hypersaline waters. At least 26 copepod species around the world can live at a salinity above 100 g/L with 12 species at a salinity higher than 200 g/L, and these all have excellent nutritional value. There is a high potential to use eukaryotic organisms of diff erent taxa in saline/hypersaline aquaculture for food, agri-aquaculture, diff erent industries and as food supplements.

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(QTP)possesses the largest areas of permafrost in the midand low latitude regions on the earth and many large Lakes in the permafrost area.Based on a comprehensive investigation around certain typical Lakes,this study found that although the presence of Lakes formed different ranges of unfrozen zones in permafrost,the heating effect of lake water on surrounding permafrost is limited to a small extent.The temperature of permafrost around the lake is closely related to the distance to the lake and the ice content of the permafrost.Around Lakes are ice-rich permafrost zones and permafrost temperature in this area is significantly lower than that far away from the lake,which indicates that the existence of Lakes in the QTP has special effect on the permafrost distribution.Based on the monitoring results,this study presents the typical distribution pattern of the permafrost around large Lakes and discusses the reasons for the distribution pattern.Due to the huge area of Lakes and the significant impact of Lakes on permafrost distribution,it is suggested to re-estimate the total permafrost area and underground ice storage in the QTP.

Lakes are the main reservoirs of persistent organic pollutants(POPs)from land,atmo sphere and rivers.POPs in Lakes undergo complex exchange,transformation,and degradation between water-air-sediment-biota interfaces,which are constrained and regulated by various physical,chemical and biological factors.POPs can affect ecological conditions,chemical properties of water and sedi ments,and biodiversity of the lake system.Therefore,it is important to study the sources,migration,transformation,environmental behavior and ecological impacts of POPs in lake ecosystems.This re view summarizes research progress on detection technologies,diversity and origins,historical records,migration and transformation,distribution patterns,degradation and toxic effects of POPs in Lakes.Fi nally,future directions related to POPs in Lakes were summarized.

This article describes the lake basins of the Jom-Bolok volcanic region in the East Sayan (the largest manifestation of the Holocene eruptions in Central Asia).The geomorphological position,origins,aspects of the structure and development are reviewed considering its sedimentary filling.The limnic morphogenesis here develops under the conditions of contrasting relief,high energy of neotectonic and exogenous processes.We established that Lake Khara-Nur,formed as a result of lava-damming of the Jom-Bolok river valley,emerged in its present form approximately 6500 years ago.A complex record on the environment and climatic changes,acquired from its sediments,made it possible to determine for the first time in this region the long-term trends in the development of the Middle and Late Holocene mountain geosystems and also the distinction of several paleogeographic stages of the formation of the natural environment.An average geochemical record resolution for the bottom sediments of the lake was made uniquely for the East Siberian lake records and is equal to 35 years,while the palynological record approximates 110 years.
